Keep an unchanged copy of every generated candidate, link the chosen deliverable to its source files, and record why it was selected in a project log. Use C2PA Content Credentials when your tools support them, but treat them as provenance evidence—not a complete record of prompts, comparisons, or editorial decisions.
What to preserve for each generated asset
For reliable records, retain both the files and the context behind the decision. A credential can connect provenance information to an asset, but your own project records should capture details the tool may not include.
- Original candidate: Save the file as downloaded or exported, before opening and resaving it. Keep an unchanged copy, its original filename or repository location, and a stable asset ID.
- Generation context: Record the creation date and time if known, the generator and model or version if shown, and the prompt or brief when policy permits.
- Decision: Mark whether the candidate was selected, identify the decision maker, and record a concise reason. Preserve the other candidates too when the comparison is relevant.
- Changes and relationships: For an edited or combined deliverable, link it to its parent candidate IDs and record the sequence of meaningful edits.
These are practical recordkeeping fields, not requirements imposed by C2PA. Adapt them to your organization’s privacy, retention, and disclosure policies.

Use Content Credentials as one layer of provenance
C2PA represents provenance through assertions, a claim, a signature, and content bindings. Its model includes derived assets—files made by modifying existing assets—and composed assets that bring together parts of one or more assets. Content bindings, including cryptographic hashes and softer signals such as fingerprints or invisible watermarks, associate provenance information with content. They do not establish that every assertion is complete or that a selection rationale was recorded. See the C2PA 2.4 specification.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Whether a particular product writes, preserves, or exposes these relationships depends on its implementation and the file path. Check the actual tools and delivery route you use rather than assuming that provenance will survive every export or upload.
What Adobe documents for Firefly
Adobe says it automatically applies Content Credentials to Firefly assets when 100% of the pixels are generated with Firefly, such as with Text to Image. Its documentation, updated August 25, 2026, lists the issuer, issue date, app or device, AI tool, and general actions among the information included automatically. Other details require the user to opt in through supported features. Credentials are attached to files and may also be stored in Adobe’s public credentials cloud; Adobe says Inspect offers credential recovery tools, not a gallery or search service. See Adobe Firefly’s Content Credentials overview.

Adobe’s Creative Studio documentation describes a separate, product-specific workflow: generated or generative-AI-edited content receives C2PA metadata, and the provenance chain is preserved when a user downloads an image file or sends it to be served in an ad. The page says metadata can include the AI system and version, model, whether the asset was generated or edited, date and time, and a unique identifier. This behavior should not be generalized to other products, exports, or platforms.
Build a simple project decision log
A spreadsheet, database, or project-management record can connect files to the decisions that produced the final deliverable. Keep the log alongside the project or in a location with stable access controls.

| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Asset ID | A stable identifier for each candidate and deliverable. |
| Original file | Original filename and retained-file location. |
| Creation context | Date and time if known; generator and model/version if shown; prompt or brief where policy permits. |
| Status and decision | Selected or not selected, decision maker, and concise rationale. |
| Relationships | Parent candidate IDs for edited or combined work, plus links to derivatives. |
| Edit history | The sequence of meaningful changes made to the selected asset. |
Keep the original candidates when the alternatives or comparison matter to approvals, licensing, compliance, or later revisions. A credential or screenshot of a credentials panel can supplement the log, but neither replaces retaining the actual file and its manifest.
Check provenance at handoff
- Retain the delivered file and compare it with the unchanged original candidate or candidates recorded in your log.
- Inspect the delivered file with a suitable provenance inspector. Review the issuer and validation state, and note the specific information the credential actually contains.
- Check that the file’s recorded relationships and edits match your project log; do not assume a tool carried them forward.
- If no credential is detected, record “no supported credential detected in this copy.” Do not label the file human-made or conclude that AI was not used.
- Where attribution matters, corroborate the credential with retained originals and project records.
Interpret missing or incomplete signals carefully
OpenAI’s provenance guidance says to verify the original file where possible. Compression, cropping, screenshots, metadata removal, and format conversion can erase or weaken provenance signals. A detected result is evidence of a supported signal, not a complete file history; a result that detects nothing is not proof of human creation or absence of AI generation. A verification result also does not establish a prompt, account, or individual creator. See OpenAI’s content provenance guide.

When assessing any implementation, ask whether it records generated-versus-edited status; issuer, time, app or model, and actions; source relationships; where the manifest is stored and whether it can be recovered; and whether its issuer and validation can be inspected. Separately confirm that originals and the selection rationale are retained. The cited product documents describe different workflows, not a controlled comparison, and do not establish preservation across every vendor or social platform.
