To read an earnings report, first confirm the period, then follow revenue and operating income down the income statement and compare both with cash from operating activities on the cash-flow statement. Revenue is not profit, operating income is not cash, and net income can differ from cash flow because of noncash expenses and the timing of payments and collections. The figures make sense only alongside the company’s explanations, statement notes, and definitions of any adjusted measures.
What the three figures tell you
Revenue: what the company earned during the period
Revenue is the income statement’s top line: amounts recognized from sales or other sources during a reporting period under the company’s accounting policies. It is not profit, and it does not necessarily equal cash collected during that period. Compare the same fiscal quarter or year across periods, then look for management’s explanation of significant revenue components and changes.

Operating income: profit from operations before interest and taxes
Operating income, sometimes labeled income from operations or operating profit, is what remains after operating costs and expenses are deducted in the income-statement sequence. In the SEC’s basic presentation, it is before interest and income taxes. It is a useful measure of operating profitability, but it does not by itself explain margins, segment mix, unusual items, or whether a trend can continue.

Cash flow: cash received and used
The cash-flow statement reports cash movements over a period in three categories: operating, investing, and financing activities. Operating cash flow is especially useful alongside earnings, but it answers a different question: how much cash did the company’s operations generate or use?
As the SEC puts it, “While an income statement can tell you whether a company made a profit, a cash flow statement can tell you whether the company generated cash.” SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Financial Statements

Why cash flow can differ from net income
For most companies, the operating section begins with net income and reconciles it to cash from operations. The reconciliation adjusts for noncash expenses and changes in operating assets and liabilities. As a result, the income statement can recognize revenue before a customer pays, or recognize expenses in a period that does not match the related cash payment.
Changes in receivables, inventory, payables, and other operating balances can therefore help explain why operating cash flow diverges from net income. A divergence is not automatically a warning sign: understand what caused it and whether the underlying timing or business change is temporary, recurring, or material.

How to read an earnings report in sequence
- Confirm the reporting period. Check whether the figures cover a quarter, year to date, or a full fiscal year. Compare like periods, and account for changes in fiscal-year length or company structure when the filing discloses them.
- Start with revenue and management’s explanation. Read the MD&A (Management’s Discussion and Analysis) for the drivers of material changes, segment trends, uncertainties, and significant revenue components. The SEC describes MD&A as a way to see the company through management’s eyes and assess the quality and variability of earnings and cash flow. SEC, Form 10-K guide SEC Financial Reporting Manual
- Move down to operating income. Ask whether it grew faster or slower than revenue and which costs or other factors explain the movement. Look for related discussion in MD&A and the notes; do not treat revenue growth alone as evidence of improving profitability.
- Inspect operating cash flow and its reconciliation. Identify the noncash adjustments and changes in operating balances that account for the difference from net income. Pay particular attention to receivables, inventory, and payables where they are material.
- Read investing and financing cash flows too. Investing cash flow can show spending on long-lived assets that may support future operations. Financing cash flow can reflect borrowing, debt repayment, share issuance, or distributions. Read these sections to understand the wider pattern of cash movement, not just the operating subtotal.
- Check the filing’s notes and audit disclosures. In a U.S. Form 10-K, Item 8 contains audited financial statements and notes. Read relevant accounting explanations, the auditor’s report, and internal-control disclosures. The SEC advises readers to pay attention to qualified or disclaimed audit opinions and disclosed material weaknesses. SEC, Form 10-K guide
- Separate GAAP results from adjusted figures. Find the issuer’s definition and reconciliation of adjusted operating income, adjusted earnings, EBITDA, or other non-GAAP measures. Check how prominently the measure is presented and whether another company’s similarly named measure is actually comparable. SEC staff interpretations on non-GAAP measures
How to compare periods or companies fairly
Use the same reporting period and accounting basis where possible. For a fuller comparison, consider revenue growth, operating income and margin, operating cash flow and its reconciliation, capital expenditure needs, and the definitions of any adjusted measures. Interpret ratios in the company’s industry context; the SEC notes that desirable ratios vary by industry. A single figure is not enough to rank companies.
What adjusted earnings and free cash flow leave out
Companies may present measures such as adjusted operating income, adjusted earnings, EBITDA, or free cash flow alongside GAAP results. SEC staff guidance describes free cash flow as typically operating cash flow less capital expenditures, but companies’ calculations can vary. Treat each issuer’s definition and reconciliation as essential context. Compare free cash flow with operating cash flow, and do not treat a non-GAAP measure as a substitute for GAAP financial measures. SEC staff interpretations on non-GAAP measures

Scope of this guide
This is a general guide to reading U.S. public-company reporting, not an analysis of a particular issuer or a valuation recommendation. Filing labels, reporting calendars, and non-GAAP definitions can differ by company and jurisdiction, so use the actual filing and its notes when interpreting a specific set of figures.
