Start with the serving size: Nutrition Facts amounts usually apply to one serving, not necessarily the whole package. Then check protein in grams, use fiber grams and % Daily Value (%DV) to compare fiber, and distinguish total sugars from the added sugars included within that total.
1. Start with serving size and servings per container
Find the serving size at the top of the Nutrition Facts label. It includes a household measure and a gram amount, and the nutrient figures below it are generally for that serving. Check servings per container as well: a package may contain several servings even if it looks like one portion.
The serving size reflects the amount people typically consume; it is not a recommendation for how much to eat. If you eat two servings, the listed nutrient amounts generally double. Some packages also display information per package. For details, see the FDA’s serving-size guidance.
When comparing products, use the same serving amount or adjust the figures to an equivalent amount. The gram measure on the label can help you measure a portion; a kitchen scale is optional and measures food weight, not its nutrient content.

2. Read protein in grams
For most people age four and older, protein is listed in grams and generally has no %DV. Use the grams as a guide when comparing equivalent servings. Protein %DV may appear if a product makes a protein claim; foods intended for infants and children under four must show protein %DV. The FDA explains these rules in its %DV guidance and label guide.
3. Use fiber grams and %DV together
Fiber is one of the nutrients the FDA identifies as one to get more of. Grams tell you the amount in a serving; %DV puts that amount in the context of a Daily Value of 28 g of dietary fiber. For example, use both figures to compare similar portions rather than treating the percentage as a personal target. The FDA’s label guide and Daily Value reference sheet explain the context.

4. Separate total sugars from added sugars
Total sugars include sugars naturally present in foods, such as milk and fruit, as well as added sugars. The line “Includes X g Added Sugars” identifies the added portion, which is already included in total sugars. Do not add the added-sugars grams to the total a second time.

For instance, in the FDA’s label example, 15 g total sugars consists of 7 g added sugars and 8 g naturally occurring sugars; the 7 g of added sugars is 14% DV. That is an agency example, not a claim about a particular product. Total sugars has no DV. See the FDA’s added-sugars guidance and label guide.

Pure honey, maple syrup, and similar single-ingredient sugars are a special case: the label may show added-sugars %DV without grams in the main declaration, using a footnote approach described by the FDA. A missing gram declaration does not mean the product has zero added sugar. The FDA’s added-sugars page describes this exception.
5. Use %DV to compare, not prescribe
The FDA’s general guide is that 5% DV or less is low and 20% DV or more is high. Use %DV to compare equivalent serving sizes: it helps show whether a serving contributes a relatively small or large share of a Daily Value, but it is not an individualized nutrition prescription. More often choosing foods higher in fiber and lower in added sugars can be a useful comparison approach, while personal dietary priorities vary. See the FDA’s low-and-high %DV guidance.

The FDA’s August 2023 reference sheet lists Daily Values of 28 g for dietary fiber and 50 g for added sugars. The added-sugars figure is based on a 2,000-calorie daily diet; it is a label reference, not an individualized target. The FDA Daily Value reference sheet provides these values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Compare two products on the same basis
- Match the serving: compare the same serving amount, or adjust both products to an equivalent amount.
- Compare protein: look at grams per equivalent serving.
- Compare fiber: consider both grams and %DV.
- Compare sugars: check added-sugars grams and %DV, while keeping total sugars in view for context.
This approach makes the numbers comparable without treating total sugars as if they were all added sugar or treating %DV as a personal daily plan.
