Read the practice report and game-status designation as two different signals: practice entries show how much a player participated, while game status communicates whether the team expects him to play. Neither predicts fantasy points or workload. Before locking a lineup, check the latest official update and the final inactive list close to kickoff.
What the two parts of an injury report tell you
Start with the player’s injury entry and practice participation. Then look separately for the game-status designation. A limited practice is not the same as being ruled out, and a player who is available may still have a reduced or uncertain fantasy role.
Practice participation: what work the player did
The NFL practice-report terms are Did Not Participate (DNP), Limited Participation and Full Participation. Under the NFL’s 2017 Injury Report Policy, limited means fewer than 100 percent of the player’s normal repetitions; full means 100 percent. These terms describe practice participation, not a final decision about game availability. Read the entry in context: a team may identify a day away from practice as rest rather than injury-related.

The game-status labels communicate availability, not a numerical chance or a fantasy projection. The NFL defines them this way:

- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
- Doubtful: It is unlikely the player will participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
The NFL’s policy revision announcement says, “If there is any question concerning a player’s availability for the game, he should be listed as ‘Questionable.’” The league’s announcement also explains why Questionable should not be translated into a personal percentage estimate.
How to interpret a player’s status without overreading it
Limited practice does not mean out
A limited entry tells you the player did fewer than all normal repetitions in practice. It does not, by itself, settle whether he will play. Use the game-status field and later official updates to assess availability.

No game-status label is not a universal all-clear
A player can appear on the practice report but not receive a game-status designation. The NFL’s 2017 policy states: “If a player was listed on the club’s Practice Report during the week, but is not listed in the club’s Game Status Report, it means that the club is certain he will play.” That policy wording concerns the club’s certainty about playing; it does not promise a normal workload or fantasy production. Read the policy document alongside the player’s reporting context.

Do not assign Questionable a fixed percentage. In 2016, the NFL said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable in prior years played; the league cited that historical figure when it eliminated Probable. That statistic is about a retired label, not the odds for a player currently listed Questionable. The NFL’s policy announcement describes the change.

Check the report again near kickoff
An early-week report is not the final word. Filing schedules vary by game day, and teams must report changes after an initial game-status filing. The NFL’s 2026 important dates calendar lists the season’s reporting schedule and update requirement.
- During the week: Note the injury and track practice participation across available reports. Treat DNP, limited and full as practice information, not an automatic game decision.
- When game status is filed: Find the separate designation—Questionable, Doubtful or Out—and use its qualitative meaning.
- After the report: Check for official changes, especially if the player remains uncertain. The initial designation can be updated.
- Close to kickoff: Recheck the official team or league update and final inactives before lineup lock. NFL fantasy support says teams designate players unable to play inactive about 90 minutes before the scheduled game time. See NFL fantasy support’s inactive guidance.
Take extra care with concussion entries
A generic practice note does not establish that a player has cleared concussion protocol. NFL concussion guidance describes five phases before clearance to fully practice or participate in a game. For a player listed with a concussion, look for an official protocol or clearance update rather than inferring clearance from a practice-participation label. The NFL’s concussion return-to-participation protocol explains the phases.

What an injury designation cannot tell you about fantasy value
An active designation answers an availability question; it does not forecast snaps, role, touches, targets or points. To decide between a player who is expected to play and another lineup option, you still need separate player- and team-specific evidence about likely usage and matchup. The injury label alone does not establish any of those outcomes.

- Use practice trend to understand participation, not to predict a score.
- Use game status to understand expected availability, not to infer a workload.
- Use the time since the last official update and the distance to kickoff to judge whether the information may have changed.
- Distinguish a rest designation from an injury-related absence when the team identifies one.
- For a concussion, check protocol status rather than reading a general practice entry as clearance.
