To find out whether an NFL player is expected to play, read the practice participation and game-status sections separately, then check the official inactive list for that specific game near kickoff. Practice designations describe work done in practice; game-status labels describe expected availability; the inactive list confirms who is inactive.
What the practice participation labels mean
Practice participation records how much of a team’s practice a player completed. It is not, by itself, a game-availability decision.
| Practice label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Did Not Participate (DNP) | The player did not participate in practice. Check the listed reason: a DNP can be for a non-injury reason and does not, by itself, mean the player is out. |
| Limited Participation | The player completed less than 100% of their normal practice repetitions. |
| Full Participation | The player completed 100% of their normal practice repetitions. |
These definitions come from the NFL’s 2016 injury-report policy announcement. A player’s participation can change during the week, so compare the latest report with earlier entries rather than treating one practice line as the final word.
What the game-status labels mean
Game status is the team’s reported estimate of whether a player will participate in the game. The NFL defines the current labels this way:
#1 Best Overall
| Game status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Questionable | It is uncertain whether the player will play. |
| Doubtful | It is unlikely the player will participate. |
| Out | The player will not play. |
The NFL removed “Probable” from the official designations. The league said approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played, making the label less useful for communicating uncertainty; that historical figure is not a current forecast. NFL policy announcement
Why practice status and game status can differ
Read the report’s practice participation and game-status sections as separate fields. A player can be listed as limited or absent from practice without that entry alone establishing whether they will play. Conversely, if a club is certain a player will play, NFL policy says the player is not listed in the game-status section. The report should also identify a rested, uninjured player as not injury related rather than presenting the rest as an injury.
“Questionable” addresses whether the player participates, not how many snaps they will take or how effective they will be. The designation is not a promise about playing time or performance.

- Confirm the matchup and week. Make sure the report is for the right team, game, and week. Start with the newest official version.
- Check the timestamp and reason. Read the injury or reason field alongside the practice entry. A DNP can have a non-injury explanation.
- Read game status on its own. Questionable means uncertain, Doubtful means unlikely to participate, and Out means the player will not play.
- Check the official inactive report near game time. The injury report describes a reported condition and expected availability; the inactive report identifies who is inactive for that game. NFL.com publishes week-specific inactive reports.
For an individual matchup, use the report and inactive list for that game, not a general injury page alone. If updates conflict, rely on the newest official team or league update and note its timestamp; do not try to infer a player’s medical condition from the practice pattern.
When NFL injury reports are filed
Filing days vary with the game schedule. The NFL’s 2026–27 important dates calendar says reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice concludes. It also requires an update if a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report is filed. Check the week and latest update time before drawing a conclusion.

The inactive list is the game-specific check for who will not be active. It is not the same as the club’s full roster. For regular-season games, the NFL roster FAQ describes a game-day active limit of 48 players when a club has at least eight offensive linemen, or 47 when it has fewer than eight; standard practice-squad elevations can affect the available game-day pool. See the NFL roster FAQ. For the reader deciding whether a player is in for a particular game, the matchup’s latest inactive report is the relevant confirmation.
