Start with the difference between revenue and demand indicators: revenue is work recognized during the quarter, while bookings and backlog describe contracted work that may be delivered and recognized later. Then check growth, delivery capacity, margins, cash flow and guidance—each answers a different question. No single quarter or earnings-call comment predicts what happens next.

Start with the filing, then use the call for context

Read the company’s quarterly report and earnings release before relying on commentary. Confirm the fiscal quarter and year, reporting date, and whether the company issued a later update. The filing and release establish reported results; the earnings call helps explain what management says changed, the assumptions behind guidance, and how executives respond to analyst questions.

Keep those categories separate: a reported result is not the same as management’s explanation, and guidance is an outlook rather than an achieved result. For example, Unisys’s Q2 2026 earnings release discusses backlog as an estimate of future contracted revenue, while emphasizing that actual revenue is the most relevant measure of results.

Read revenue growth on a consistent basis

Begin with revenue and year-over-year growth, then check whether the company reports growth in U.S. dollars, constant currency or local currency. Currency translation can make reported growth differ from growth calculated at consistent exchange rates. Read the issuer’s formula and use the same basis when comparing periods or companies.

Accenture’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended February 28, 2026 reports both U.S.-dollar and local-currency growth and explains that currency translation affected reported growth. Its $18.0 billion of revenue in that fiscal 2026 second quarter is a company- and period-specific figure, not an industry benchmark.

After the headline growth rate, look for what drove it: segments, geographies, service lines, acquisitions and changes in business mix. Revenue anchors the results because it records work recognized in the period, but it does not by itself tell you whether demand is strengthening or how profitable the work is.

Separate bookings, backlog and TCV from revenue

These measures are related but not interchangeable. In its Q2 2026 release, Unisys defines backlog as an estimate of future revenue under contracted work not yet delivered or performed; total contract value (TCV) as initial estimated revenue associated with contracts signed during a period; and book-to-bill as TCV divided by revenue for a period. Check the company’s own definitions and reporting window before interpreting any of them.

Bookings or TCV can signal contract activity, but signed contract value is not a promise that the same amount will become revenue in a particular quarter. Unisys notes that timing, client spending, scope changes, termination, volumes and other factors can affect conversion. Treat a large deal or a high book-to-bill ratio as a demand signal, not as revenue already earned.

Interpret utilization as a workforce clue, not a universal score

Utilization can indicate how much available labor is deployed, but its meaning depends on the company’s definition: which workers are counted, what is excluded, how the denominator is calculated and what period is covered. Do not compare percentages across companies as though they were standardized measurements.

For scale, Infosys management reported 85% utilization excluding trainees on its Q2 FY26 earnings call in 2025. Accenture reported 93% utilization in its fiscal 2026 second-quarter filing. Those figures use different company reporting contexts and should not be treated as directly comparable.

Read utilization alongside headcount, hiring, attrition, onsite/offshore mix, subcontractor use, and management’s comments about skills and demand. If the company does not disclose utilization, do not infer it from headcount or margin.

Check reported margins and adjusted measures separately

Compare GAAP operating income and margin with any adjusted or non-GAAP figures. Read the reconciliation to see which costs or gains were excluded before concluding that profitability improved. Adjusted measures are company-defined and may not be comparable across issuers.

When management identifies them, consider currency, pay, subcontractor costs, delivery mix, pricing, restructuring and acquisition effects. On Infosys’s Q2 FY26 call, management said operating margin expanded 20 basis points sequentially to 21%, citing currency, productivity initiatives and higher post-sale support costs among the drivers. That is management’s explanation for that period, not a general rule about how IT services margins move.

Use cash flow to test how profit converts to cash

Look at cash flow and working-capital information alongside accounting profit. Measures such as operating cash flow, free cash flow and days sales outstanding can help explain cash generation and collection timing, but use each issuer’s definitions rather than assuming the measures are calculated identically.

Infosys management reported $1.1 billion of free cash flow for Q2 FY26 and noted tax refunds as a contributor; it also reported days-sales-outstanding measures. The tax-refund comment matters when judging whether that quarter’s cash result is likely to represent a recurring pattern.

Hear guidance as an outlook with assumptions

Record the exact period and metric covered by guidance, then note the assumptions or risks management discusses on the call. Guidance is not completed performance, and a revision can reflect changed expectations rather than a change in results already reported.

On its Q2 FY26 call, Infosys stated revised FY26 constant-currency revenue-growth guidance of 2%–3% and operating-margin guidance of 20%–22%. These were dated targets for Infosys’s FY26, not current forecasts for another company or period.

Compare like with like before drawing a conclusion

  • Match fiscal periods and compare the same growth basis: reported, constant currency or local currency.
  • Distinguish quarter results from trailing-period figures, and inspect segment, geography, service-line and acquisition mix.
  • Check each issuer’s definitions for bookings, backlog, TCV, book-to-bill and utilization, including timing, worker population and exclusions.
  • Compare GAAP margins with adjusted margins only after reviewing the reconciliation.
  • Keep actual results, management explanations and forward-looking guidance in separate mental columns.
  • Do not fill in an undisclosed metric by inference from another number.
