To determine a UPS battery’s manufacturing date, identify the battery maker and read the complete code printed or stamped on the battery itself, then match it to that maker’s documented date-code format. There is no universal UPS-battery decoder. A UPS serial number generally dates the UPS, not a replaceable battery that may have been installed later.
How to identify and decode the battery date code
- Read the battery label. Record the manufacturer, model, and complete printed or stamped code. Do not use only part of a longer identifier.
- Find that manufacturer’s code guidance. Eaton’s chart lists formats used by several suppliers for batteries in Eaton UPS products, but those formats are not universal. Match both the manufacturer and the pattern before decoding. Eaton UPS Battery Handbook
- Interpret the code only when it fits the documented format. For example, YYDDD means a two-digit year followed by a Julian day number, not a month and day.
- Ask for confirmation if the code is unclear. Contact the battery maker or UPS maker with the model and full code if the marking is missing, obscured, or not covered by the available guidance.
Formats listed in Eaton’s handbook
The following formats are listed for suppliers of batteries used in Eaton UPS products. They are a starting point for identification, not a standard for every battery or product family.

Eaton’s separate storage-life page gives different details for some formats: it lists EnerSys High Rate as DDMMMYY and Panasonic as MMDDYY. Is the date on the UPS the battery’s manufacturing date?
Not necessarily. A UPS serial number identifies the equipment’s age; it cannot establish when a replaceable battery currently inside it was made. APC says the first two digits of an APC UPS serial number indicate the year the UPS was manufactured. APC: How to find the manufacture date of an APC UPS

Eaton’s serial-number instructions likewise decode the UPS, not its battery. Eaton says the serial label is on the back or side of the unit or on its rating label, and that its decoding tips do not apply to UPS units made before 2009; for those older units, it recommends contacting support. What the manufacturing date can—and cannot—tell you
A manufacturing date helps establish how long a battery may have been in service or storage, but it is not a capacity test and does not by itself prove that the battery is usable or unusable. Eaton explains that VRLA batteries self-discharge during storage and defines shelf life by the time until a battery loses 40%–50% of its initial capacity. APC says UPS batteries typically last 3–5 years, with lifespan varying according to how often and how long they are used and environmental conditions such as heat and humidity. What to do if replacement may be needed
Use the UPS model—not just the battery’s date code—to identify a compatible replacement. APC says the barcode sticker shows the UPS model number and directs users to its battery selector to find the correct replacement cartridge. For CSB and GS Yuasa, official product pages confirm that each makes UPS batteries, but the reviewed pages do not provide a date-code decoder.
