To see where a football club gets its money, start with its income statement, then check the revenue notes and accounting policies. Identify the period and currency, compare the prior-period figures, and separate matchday, broadcasting, sponsorship, commercial and competition income from player-sale profits and other non-operating items. Those distinctions matter: clubs may group income differently, and cash received is not always recognised as income at the same time.

Where does a football club get its money?

UEFA’s 2026 club-licensing framework distinguishes several useful income categories. A club’s own accounts may use different labels or combine amounts, so use the accompanying notes to find out what each line includes.

Income category What to look for
Gate receipts and matchday General-admission and corporate tickets, season tickets, and membership fees.
Sponsorship and advertising Main and other sponsors, perimeter-board advertising, and other advertising arrangements.
Broadcasting Income from television, radio, new-media, and other broadcast rights. UEFA’s relevant-income definition covers national competitions and other matches, but excludes UEFA club competitions from this category.
Commercial activities Merchandising, club-brand licensing, food and beverage at matches, and other commercial income from football activities.
UEFA solidarity and prize money Distributions connected with UEFA club-competition participation and solidarity payments.
Other operating income Football operating income outside the categories above; under UEFA’s definition, this can include grants and subsidies from a national football body or government, and rent.

Sponsorship and commercial activities are separate in UEFA’s definitions, but club disclosures vary. Read the notes before comparing those subtotals: one club’s line may not cover the same items as another’s.

How should you read the accounts?

1. Check the reporting period, currency, and comparison

Annual accounts cover a defined reporting period, which may not match either the calendar year or the football season. Note the start and end dates, currency, and comparative prior-period column before deciding whether a figure has risen or fallen. For statements prepared under UEFA licensing requirements, comparative amounts for the prior period are required.

2. Find the income statement and its notes

The income statement is the starting point, not the whole explanation. UEFA’s licensing requirements list a balance sheet, income statement, cash-flow statement, changes-in-equity statement, notes, and management financial review; the statements are independently audited. For income analysis, use the notes to unpack broad headings and check the accounting policies behind them.

3. Map each line to an income category

Match the club’s labels to the categories in the table. If a line is broad—such as “commercial,” “other income,” or “revenue”—look for a breakdown in the notes rather than assuming it means the same thing across clubs. In particular, do not assume sponsorship is included in commercial activities, or that a competition distribution is included in broadcasting.

How much money does a club make from TV rights?

There is no single figure that applies to every club. Find the club’s broadcasting-rights line and the note defining it; check the reporting period and whether the amount covers domestic competitions, other matches, or additional rights. Under UEFA’s relevant-income categories, UEFA club-competition distributions are separate from broadcasting income, so do not add them to or compare them with a broadcasting figure without checking the club’s presentation.

Why recognised income may differ from cash received

Accounts record income according to recognition rules, not simply when money enters the bank. A season ticket may be sold and paid for before a season, while its revenue is recognised proportionately as the relevant matches take place.

  • Broadcasting and competition participation: fixed consideration is recognised in proportion to the relevant matches; variable, performance-linked consideration is recognised when the performance obligation is satisfied.
  • Sponsorship and advertising: fixed consideration is recognised over the agreement period. Variable consideration depends on the relevant performance obligations being satisfied. UEFA’s rule measures non-cash sponsorship consideration at fair value.
  • Grants and subsidies: a grant is not recognised until there is reasonable assurance that the club will meet the conditions and receive it. It is then recognised systematically over the periods in which related costs are expensed, subject to specified exceptions for already-incurred costs or immediate support.
  • Future revenue-generating rights: these are recognised evenly over the periods covered by the underlying agreement or transaction.

These rules mean that a cash receipt in one period may contribute to recognised income in another. Check the accounting-policy note before treating a year-on-year change as a change in cash collected or commercial performance.

Does transfer income count as revenue?

Player-registration disposals need separate attention because the reported amount depends on the club’s accounting method. Under UEFA’s current rules, a club using capitalisation and amortisation reports a disposal profit after deducting the registration’s net book value from net proceeds. A club using the income-and-expense method reports net proceeds as disposal income. These are different measures, so a transfer-related line is not automatically comparable to another club’s figure—or to recurring matchday, media, and commercial income.

Also check whether the figure you are reading is the club’s revenue subtotal or a regulatory measure. UEFA’s “relevant income” calculation can include adjusted player-disposal, finance, foreign-exchange, and other non-operating components; it is not simply another name for the revenue subtotal in every club’s accounts.

How to compare two clubs fairly

Before comparing totals or income mix, align the periods, definitions, currencies, and accounting methods. Then check what the measure includes and how amounts are recognised.

  • Separate recurring operating categories from competition distributions, player disposals, finance income, foreign-exchange results, and other non-operating items.
  • Check whether variable bonuses or other conditional income were recognised in the period.
  • If using UEFA football-earnings figures, treat them as adjusted regulatory measures and consult the reconciliation to annual financial statements or underlying records.

UEFA’s licensing framework offers a consistent European reference point, but a regulatory calculation and a club’s published revenue lines answer different questions. Local accounting requirements and each club’s presentation can also differ.

What European-wide figures can—and cannot—tell you

UEFA reported that European first-division club revenue reached just under €24 billion in financial year 2022, despite lingering pandemic impacts. That is an aggregate, not an estimate for a typical club. In a 2024 release based on early submissions, UEFA projected that revenue would exceed €26 billion for financial year 2023; that was a projection, not a final audited total. These dated figures provide context, not a current 2026 total or a basis for inferring an individual club’s income.

UEFA also said in its 2024 report announcement that 93.5% of UEFA club-competition revenue went back to participating clubs and 6.5% was reinvested in grassroots funding. Those percentages apply to UEFA club-competition revenue, not all club revenue or any individual club’s income mix.
