To analyze a bank’s quarterly results before investing, compare the same bank across periods, understand how it makes money, and connect earnings to credit quality, deposits, liquidity, and capital. A single quarter’s profit—or a sector average—is not a buy or sell signal. Use the bank’s earnings release and filing first, then regulator data for context.
Start with the reporting period and the bank’s business
Confirm which quarter the results cover and compare both year over year and with the prior quarter. Seasonal patterns, acquisitions, unusual transactions, and accounting effects can make one comparison look better or worse than the underlying trend. Read the bank’s explanation of material changes, but check those explanations against its tables and filing.
Next, identify the bank’s business mix. A regional lender, custody bank, card issuer, and capital-markets-heavy institution do not earn revenue in the same way. Compare a bank with its own history and with peers that have reasonably similar size, business models, loan concentrations, and reporting periods.
What should you look at in a bank’s earnings report?
Net interest income, margin, and funding costs
Net interest income is the dollar difference between interest earned on assets and interest paid on liabilities. Net interest margin (NIM) relates net interest income to average earning assets; the Federal Reserve uses this definition in its Banking System Conditions report. NIM is a useful summary, but it does not explain why the margin changed.
#1 Best Overall
Check the bank’s asset yields, deposit costs, deposit mix, and balance-sheet mix. For example, a change in NIM needs to be interpreted alongside whether loan or securities yields shifted, what the bank is paying for deposits, and how the mix of assets and funding changed. The bank’s own tables and commentary are needed to identify those drivers.
Revenue quality, expenses, and profitability
Separate interest income from noninterest income, then look at operating expenses. Identify unusual gains, charges, assessments, or reserve changes that could make a quarter’s reported earnings less representative of recurring performance. Consider whether management describes an item as one-time and whether the filing supports that characterization.
Return on average assets (ROAA) and return on equity (ROE) summarize profitability: the Federal Reserve defines them as net income divided by average assets and average equity, respectively. They help put earnings in context, but they do not replace examining what produced those earnings.

Credit quality and reserves
Look at loan growth and category mix alongside several credit measures. Past-due and nonaccrual loans, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, recoveries, provisions, and allowance disclosures capture different parts of the picture. A provision can reduce current earnings; a charge-off reflects a loan already judged uncollectible. Read the bank’s explanation and relevant filing tables rather than treating one metric as a complete credit assessment.
Rank #2
The FDIC’s Call Report instructions identify schedules covering charge-offs and recoveries. Regulator-wide delinquency or reserve trends can provide context, but they do not establish the condition of an individual bank’s loan portfolio.
Deposits, funding, and liquidity
Assess deposits and liquidity together. Review whether deposits grew or declined, the composition and concentration of deposits, estimated uninsured deposits, brokered deposits, wholesale borrowing, and accessible liquid assets. Ask whether short-term or potentially volatile funding supports longer-duration assets.
The Federal Reserve’s Commercial Bank Examination Manual identifies deposit stability and trends, funding diversification, readily convertible assets, and reliance on volatile short-term funds as liquidity considerations. A headline deposit total alone cannot show how stable the funding is or how quickly assets could be converted to cash.

Capital, growth, and shareholder distributions
Review common equity tier 1 (CET1) and other capital ratios together with risk-weighted asset growth, earnings, dividends, and share repurchases. A capital ratio can decline even while a bank remains profitable if distributions or growth in risk-weighted assets exceed the capital added through earnings. Check both the ratio and the factors that moved it.
Use management’s outlook and regulator data carefully
Compare management’s guidance with what the bank actually reported. Note changes in assumptions and unresolved questions from the earnings call, then reconcile management’s claims with the filing. External context can help distinguish an institution-specific development from a broader trend, but check each source’s date, population, and definitions before comparing.
The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile reports aggregate earnings, loan and deposit activity, asset quality, and other measures. FDIC-insured institutions file Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income, commonly called Call Reports, at each calendar quarter-end; the FDIC’s Bank Financial Reports page explains the reporting background.
For dated sector context, the FDIC reported that all FDIC-insured institutions had $80.5 billion in aggregate net income and a 1.26% return on assets in first-quarter 2026; aggregate net income was up $2.8 billion, or 3.6%, from the prior quarter. These are system-wide figures, not a forecast or benchmark for a particular bank. The Federal Reserve’s June 2026 Banking System Conditions report described aggregate banking-system ROAA of approximately 1.1% and ROE of 11.2% at year-end 2025. It also reported a 12% aggregate CET1 ratio for large banks at the end of first-quarter 2026. Most banks in its sample had a quarter-over-quarter decline as shareholder distributions and risk-weighted asset growth outweighed incremental earnings; all large banks in that sample remained well capitalized. Those figures describe specified periods and populations, not the latest results of an unnamed bank.
