To reach Ginger Island in Stardew Valley, repair Willy’s boat after completing the Community Center or Joja route. From there, use Golden Walnuts to open regions and services: the west gives you the island farm, the north leads to the Volcano Dungeon and Dig Site, and 100 walnuts unlock Qi’s Walnut Room. The best order depends on whether you want to farm, explore, or make repeat travel easier.
How to reach Ginger Island and find your way around
Ginger Island becomes available late in the game, after you repair Willy’s boat. Arrival does not unlock the whole island at once; parrots open routes and facilities in exchange for Golden Walnuts.

| Island Farmhouse | 20 walnuts | A place to sleep, cook, and ship items on the island. |

| Farm Obelisk | 20 walnuts after building the farmhouse and mailbox | Adds an island-to-farm travel option. |
For exact prerequisites, use the in-game parrot prompts; the costs and conditions listed above are reported by the Golden Walnut reference and related island pages.
Choose upgrades around your goal
- For crops and longer stays: Open the west, then consider the farmhouse.
- For exploration: Prioritize the routes and areas needed for your next activity, such as the Dig Site or Volcano.
- For frequent crossings: Consider the Parrot Express or, if you will use the island farm regularly, the farmhouse and its later travel upgrades.
- For completion: Treat Qi’s Walnut Room as a later milestone rather than a first-arrival priority.
These are practical choices based on what each upgrade enables, not an official ranking.
How island farming and the farmhouse work
The west-side farm can grow crops in any season, much like the Greenhouse. It supports sprinklers and fruit trees, and crows do not spawn there, so scarecrows are unnecessary. This makes the farm useful for crops that would otherwise be restricted by the mainland calendar, but it is not automatically the best use of every player’s time. Stardew Valley Wiki: Ginger Island
Repairing the Island Farmhouse costs 20 Golden Walnuts. It provides a kitchen, a Tropical Bed for each farmer, and a shipping bin, so you can stay overnight and ship goods without returning to the mainland. A mailbox costs 5 walnuts; the Farm Obelisk costs 20 after the farmhouse and mailbox prerequisites are met. Stardew Valley Wiki: Island Farmhouse
Complete the Gourmand Frog’s crop requests
- Repair the Island Farmhouse to access the farm-side task.
- Grow a Melon to maturity and show it to the Gourmand Frog before harvesting.
- Repeat with Wheat, then Garlic, showing each crop while it is mature and unharvested.
The frog rewards 5 Golden Walnuts for each crop, for 15 in total. Stardew Valley Wiki: Ginger Island

How to get through the Volcano Dungeon
The Volcano is at the island’s north end. Its dungeon has 10 floors, and the Forge is on floor 10. To cross the lava river at the entrance, use a watering can to make a temporary walkable path; that crossing resets overnight. A Steel or better watering can can span the river in one use, according to the Volcano Dungeon reference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Bring a watering can and use it on the entrance lava to create a path.
- Work through the dungeon’s floors until you reach the Forge.
- After reaching the Forge and opening the exit shortcut, pay 5 Golden Walnuts to the parrot for a permanent entrance bridge.
The Forge lets you upgrade tools and weapons with Cinder Shards. The permanent bridge is a convenience for repeat visits; if you do not buy it, recreate the crossing with your watering can when you return. Stardew Valley Wiki: Volcano Dungeon

Island Field Office: fossils and surveys
Rescue Professor Snail from the nearby cave to activate the Field Office at the Dig Site. Donate fossil pieces and complete the Island Survey to earn Golden Walnut rewards. This is a collection and survey activity, separate from trading with the Island Trader. Stardew Valley Wiki: Island Field Office

Island Trader: barter goods
The bluebird merchant in the north becomes available after you purchase the farmhouse and spend 10 Golden Walnuts to unlock the trader. It accepts barter goods rather than gold, and its stock includes island-themed items. Some stock may rotate. Stardew Valley Wiki: Island Trader
Qi’s Walnut Room: completion and challenges
At 100 Golden Walnuts, you can enter Qi’s Walnut Room. It contains the perfection tracker and connects to Qi Gems and special challenges, making it more relevant to completion-focused play than to your first island visit. Stardew Valley Wiki: Golden Walnut Stardew Valley Wiki: Qi’s Walnut Room
Plan your next island visit
- Check the parrot prompts before spending walnuts so you know each upgrade’s prerequisites.
- Choose a region or service that advances your immediate goal rather than trying to unlock everything at once.
- If you plan to farm or stay overnight, account for the farmhouse cost; if you mainly want the Forge, take a watering can until you decide whether the permanent bridge is worth the walnuts.
The wiki is a detailed community reference, not the game publisher. If an update changes island costs or prerequisites, the in-game prompts are the safer guide.
