Cloudflare Tunnel lets a service behind your home router receive traffic without a router port being forwarded. The key is that cloudflared, running on your server or another host that can reach the service, starts encrypted outbound connections to Cloudflare. Requests for a hostname you configure can then travel back through those connections to the local service.
How Cloudflare Tunnel carries a request
The usual path for a published web application is:
Browser → Cloudflare hostname → Cloudflare network → established tunnel → local service
First, cloudflared connects outward from your network to Cloudflare. When someone visits the configured hostname, Cloudflare routes the matching request over that established connection. Your router does not need to accept an unsolicited inbound connection for this tunnel traffic. Cloudflare describes the connector as establishing “outbound, post-quantum encrypted connections to Cloudflare — no inbound ports or firewall changes required.” That is Cloudflare’s description of the tunnel connection, not a guarantee that every aspect of your application or network is secure. The tunnel does not discover or publish every service on your network by itself. You configure a published-application route that pairs a hostname, for example app.example.com, with the service’s local address, such as http://localhost:8080. What you need to publish a service
- A Cloudflare account and a domain on Cloudflare for the hostname you want to publish.
- An internet-connected server or virtual machine that can run
cloudflaredand reach the application. - A working local service URL, plus a hostname-to-service route in the tunnel configuration.
Cloudflare’s guided setup creates the tunnel and adds a published application route. For non-HTTP services such as SSH, TCP, or RDP, Cloudflare’s guide requires cloudflared on the client side as well; these are not simply ordinary browser visits to a web hostname. Firewall requirements: allow outbound, not inbound
“No port forwarding” does not mean the connector needs no network access. The host running cloudflared must be able to reach Cloudflare on outbound port 7844. Cloudflare documents TCP or UDP transport, depending on the selected transport. A restrictive outbound firewall can therefore stop the tunnel from connecting.

Port 7844 is an outbound requirement from the host to Cloudflare; it is not a port to forward on your router. A public hostname is not automatically a private app
Tunnel changes the path traffic takes to your origin; it does not decide who is allowed to use the application. If you publish a hostname without an access restriction, treat the application as publicly reachable. For a service meant only for you or selected users, configure Cloudflare Access policies as a separate identity and authorization layer. Protect the application itself as well: credentials, application vulnerabilities, other public hostnames, and local network paths remain relevant. The narrower, supportable benefit is that the origin need not expose inbound ports for traffic delivered through this tunnel—not that the whole machine has no attack surface.
How much redundancy Cloudflare documents
Cloudflare’s 2026 Tunnel overview says a tunnel maintains four long-lived connections to two Cloudflare data centers. Its configuration documentation describes four outbound-only connections to at least two distinct data centers and says a tunnel can have up to 25 replicas, or 100 connections. When this approach fits
Cloudflare Tunnel is a fit when you can keep a connector running on a host with internet access, allow its required outbound connection, and use a Cloudflare-managed domain for the hostname. It can avoid configuring inbound router access for the tunnel path. You still need to choose deliberately between a publicly reachable application and one restricted by Access.

This explanation does not establish the detailed behavior of every router’s forwarding feature or compare specific implementations.
