To re-pair Bluetooth earbuds, remove them from Windows, put them into the model-specific pairing mode, add them again, and select them as the sound output. If sound turns mono or muffled only when an app uses the earbud microphone, re-pairing may not fix it: classic Bluetooth switches to a hands-free profile with different audio capabilities.

Re-pair earbuds in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Find the earbuds, open More options (…), and select Remove device.
  3. Put the earbuds into pairing mode using the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure they are charged, switched on, and near the PC.
  4. In Settings, select Add device > Bluetooth, then select the earbuds when they appear.
  5. Open Settings > System > Sound and select the earbuds as the output. You can also choose them from the taskbar sound controls.

These are Microsoft’s documented remove-and-add and output-selection steps: Fix Bluetooth connected but no sound issue on Windows. The exact button or gesture for entering pairing mode varies by earbud model.

Re-pair earbuds in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  2. Select the earbuds and choose Remove device.
  3. Select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth, then choose the earbuds from the list.
  4. Open Settings > System > Sound > Choose your output device and select the earbuds.
  5. If they are not selected or sound is still missing, right-click the taskbar sound icon, open Sounds > Playback, select the earbuds, and inspect Properties > Advanced.

Windows 10’s Settings labels differ from Windows 11’s. Microsoft documents its Windows 10 remove-and-add and playback-device steps in the same Bluetooth no-sound guide.

Why sound becomes mono or muffled when the microphone is used

Classic Bluetooth uses separate profiles for different jobs. A2DP is for stereo media playback; HFP supports microphone capture and monaural playback. Windows can therefore play music in stereo until a meeting, call, or chat app opens the earbuds’ microphone, then switch to hands-free audio. This behavior is a profile limitation, not necessarily a failed pairing. Microsoft describes the profiles and Windows endpoint behavior in Bluetooth Classic Audio – Windows drivers.

  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

For classic Bluetooth, re-pairing cannot make the microphone profile provide A2DP stereo. A practical workaround is to keep the earbuds selected for output and choose a separate microphone—such as the PC’s built-in mic—in the calling app. App controls vary, so check that app’s audio settings.

When stereo can continue while the microphone is active

Windows 11 supports stereo playback with an active microphone only under specific LE Audio conditions. Microsoft requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, a PC with integrated Bluetooth LE support, required manufacturer drivers, and earbuds or other headphones that support LE Audio. Without the needed device, PC, or driver support, Microsoft says microphone use results in mono audio.

  1. Pair and connect the LE Audio device.
  2. Open Settings > System > Sound and select the device under Output.
  3. Expand Output settings > Format and look for Format when microphone is active.

If the setting is absent, Microsoft says the system does not support stereo while the microphone is active. If stereo causes glitches or lost audio, try mono for compatibility. Also check that system-wide mono audio is off when you want stereo. See Microsoft’s LE Audio quality settings guide.

If the earbuds are paired but sound is missing or not stereo

  • Confirm the output device. In Windows Sound settings, select the earbuds. Check the app’s own audio output selection and volume too.
  • Check the audio format. Microsoft documents 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) in its Windows audio instructions. In Windows 11, the Advanced sound properties option requires the Bluetooth device to be connected. The format setting does not override a hands-free profile’s limits.
  • Reset the Bluetooth connection. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, then retry pairing.
  • Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Windows 11 users can use Get Help or the Settings-based troubleshooting option described by Microsoft in Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows.
  • Check drivers. Update the Bluetooth adapter through Device Manager or follow the PC manufacturer’s driver guidance. Restart if Windows requests it.
  • Verify stereo capability. Confirm that the earbuds support A2DP for higher-quality stereo streaming; re-pairing cannot add a profile the earbuds do not support.
  • If the earbuds do not appear, make sure Bluetooth is enabled, airplane mode is off, and the earbuds are charged, on, and in range. Windows 11 may require Bluetooth device discovery to be set to Advanced.
  • If only one earbud plays, the issue may be on the earbud side or involve channel pairing. Follow the manufacturer’s reset and support instructions; reset steps vary by model.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 re-pairing steps remain useful on PCs that still run it, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting page for its support notice.
