To re-download a movie you purchased from Apple, open the Apple TV app on your iPad, tap Library, select the movie, then tap Download. Download it before you go offline; deleting its downloaded copy from the iPad does not remove the purchase from your iCloud library.
Re-download a purchased movie from the Apple TV app
- Open the Apple TV app on your iPad.
- Tap Library.
- Tap the purchased movie you want to save on the iPad.
- Tap Download and wait for the download to finish before disconnecting from the internet.
These are Apple’s current steps for downloading a purchased movie again. The download is what makes the movie available for offline viewing. Apple’s re-download instructions explain the process.
If the purchased movie is missing from Library
Check the likely causes in this order. Apple’s published troubleshooting steps are diagnostic guidance; they do not guarantee that every unavailable title can be restored.
Confirm the Apple Account that bought it
Check that the iPad is signed in with the Apple Account used to purchase the movie. A purchase made with a different account will not necessarily appear in the current account’s Library. Apple’s redownload troubleshooting guide recommends checking purchase history and the account used.

Look for a hidden purchase
A hidden movie may be absent from Library even though it remains in purchase history. Apple’s instructions for unhiding movies and TV shows use the Apple TV app on a Mac or Windows computer; the guide does not establish an iPad-only unhide process. Follow Apple’s hidden purchase guidance to check and unhide it.
Check Family Sharing purchases
If a family member bought the movie and shares purchases with you, open Library in the Apple TV app and choose that family member’s name or profile to browse their shared purchases. Select the movie from there. Apple notes that Family Sharing members can download eligible purchases from other family members.

Retry the download and check device association
If the movie appears in purchase history but will not download, check the internet connection and try again using Apple’s troubleshooting path. Apple also notes that an iPad associated with a different Apple Account may have to wait before it can download purchases again. If the title remains unavailable, use the report-a-problem option described in Apple’s support guidance.
If the movie shows Buy instead of Download
Apple documents a display issue on iOS and iPadOS 18.0 and later where a movie that is already in Library may show a Buy button. For that case, Apple’s workaround is to open the Apple TV app, tap Library, find the movie, tap More, then tap Play. Do not purchase it again as the first response to this specific display issue. What happens when you delete a downloaded movie
Deleting the downloaded copy frees space on the iPad; it does not, by itself, delete the purchase from your iCloud purchase library. You can download it again later by returning to Library, provided the purchase is available to your account and in your region. Apple’s iPad Library guide explains managing downloads and watching them without an internet connection. Availability can vary by country or region.
