You can compare video game character arcs without naming their biggest twists by judging how clearly a character develops, how strongly that development lands, and how well it fits the game around it. This is an editorial framework, not an objective industry standard: readers may value emotional impact, player choice, or narrative structure differently. Spoiler boundary: the approach below sticks to starting situations, recurring motivations, relationships, themes, and broad development; it avoids pivotal decisions, late-game revelations, and outcomes.
What makes a character arc worth ranking?
A useful ranking explains why one arc sits above another instead of treating personal preference as universal fact. Compare each character against the same criteria, while allowing the game’s form to shape how those criteria apply. GDC’s 2018 session description connects engaging game characters with growth, depth, emotion, and player agency; its 2023 session listing highlights the challenges of building protagonists and relationships for open gameplay and replayable structures. Those discussions inform the comparison lenses below, but neither establishes a scoring formula or ranks particular characters.
The weights here are an editorial choice. They emphasize development and emotional effect, while giving player agency meaningful but not mandatory weight. A tightly authored single-player story should not lose simply because it offers fewer branching responses than a choice-driven game.

| Criterion | Weight | What to assess without spoilers |
|---|---|---|
| Discernible development | 30% | Whether the character’s outlook, priorities, relationships, or behavior meaningfully develop over the game. |
| Emotional impact | 25% | Whether the arc creates a memorable response, and whether that response feels earned through the character’s presentation. |
| Structural coherence | 20% | Whether the character’s development holds together within the game’s linear, open-world, replayable, or otherwise non-linear structure. |
| Fit to the game’s scale and form | 15% | Whether the narrative approach suits the game’s scope and uses its format effectively, rather than demanding a different kind of story. |
| Agency and reactivity | 10% | Where player influence is part of the game, whether the character or narrative responds in ways that support the arc. |
Score each criterion on the same scale—such as 1 to 5—then apply the weights consistently. For example, multiply each criterion score by its percentage weight and add the results. Treat the result as a way to organize judgment, not a scientific measurement: a small numerical difference does not prove that one arc is objectively better.

How to judge an arc without revealing plot turns
Describe the starting situation and recurring motivations
Give readers enough context to understand what the character wants or struggles with at the beginning, without recounting the events that change their course. Broad descriptions such as “a guarded survivor learning to rely on others” can establish an arc’s direction while leaving the reasons and consequences for players to discover.
Use relationships and themes as evidence
Discuss the kinds of relationships the character forms and the themes those connections bring forward. You can explain that a game explores trust, responsibility, identity, or belonging without naming a pivotal conversation or its outcome. Focus on patterns across the story rather than the scene that makes a pattern unmistakable.
Rank #2
Describe change at a high level
It is fair to say that a character becomes more open, questions a familiar belief, or takes on a new responsibility if that fact is not itself a major reveal. Avoid specifying when the change happens, what triggers it, or what the character ultimately chooses. If even the broad direction of development would spoil the experience, describe the arc through its themes and presentation instead.
Keep the same boundary across every entry
A ranking loses its spoiler-safe promise if one character gets a careful overview and another gets a scene-by-scene explanation. Set a consistent rule: no pivotal decisions, late-game revelations, endings, or outcomes. Warn readers if a particular entry requires more context than that rule allows, or omit the detail.
How player agency belongs in the comparison
Agency and reactivity matter when the game lets players influence relationships, behavior, or story outcomes. In those cases, consider whether the character’s development responds to that influence and whether the game still communicates a coherent arc. GDC’s 2018 session description raises the challenge of maintaining story integrity when players control outcomes, making agency a relevant lens—not a requirement that every strong arc must meet.
For a largely linear game, assess what the authored story does with the character rather than penalizing it for not offering branches. For a player-driven story, avoid claiming that every player experiences the same arc if choices can produce different responses. Explain the kind of reactivity the game offers in broad terms, without listing consequential choices or their results.
Rank #4
How to account for open-world and replayable games
A non-linear game may not deliver character development in one fixed sequence. A ranking that assumes every player encounters the same scenes in the same order can misread how its arc works. Consider instead whether the game creates a recognizable through-line across its possible play orders.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Look for authored anchor moments: Identify whether recurring, deliberately placed story beats give the character’s development shape, without describing their revelations.
- Consider world and regional themes: Ask whether exploration or regional stories reinforce the character’s concerns, even when players encounter them in a different order.
- Assess reusable content: In games built for repeated or flexible play, consider whether recurring interactions support a consistent characterization rather than requiring a single linear sequence.
- Judge coherence on the game’s terms: A scattered structure can be intentional. Assess whether its pieces still create a legible character, rather than measuring it against a linear plot’s progression.
Ubisoft Toronto’s account of its 2023 GDC talk recommends matching narrative approach to a game’s scale and scope, using authored anchor moments, and developing characters without relying only on linear plot arcs. That guidance supports judging open and replayable stories by how their parts work together, not by whether they imitate a conventional beginning-to-end arc.

How to adapt the framework to different character types
Not every game character is designed to change in the same way. A blank-slate protagonist, a strongly authored lead, and a supporting character may invite different expectations. GDC’s 2014 character-design session description says its framework covers linear and sandbox-style characters, including blank-slate characters; Game Developer’s 2018 summary offers secondary corroboration that character frameworks can address different game styles and blank-slate protagonists. This supports flexible criteria, not identical expectations or scores for every type.
- For a blank-slate protagonist: Look at how the game makes room for player interpretation and whether the world, relationships, or consequences give the character’s role meaning. Do not assume that a fixed personality arc is the only valid form of development.
- For a strongly authored protagonist: Consider whether the character’s changing outlook and relationships are clear and convincingly presented, without requiring the player to control the arc.
- For a supporting character: Judge the arc at the scale the game gives it. A concise, well-integrated development may fit better than a more elaborate arc would.
Turn the framework into a transparent ranking
- Set scope: Decide which games and characters qualify, and apply the same boundary to every entry.
- Choose and disclose criteria: Use the criteria and weights above or change them to match your priorities; say what you changed and why.
- Gather spoiler-safe evidence: Note each character’s broad starting situation, recurring motivations, relationship dynamics, themes, and development without recording the plot turns that reveal how the arc resolves.
- Score consistently: Use the same rating scale and apply each weight in the same way. Leave room for a short explanation where a number alone would hide an important difference.
- Check each entry for spoilers: Remove pivotal decisions, late-game revelations, and outcomes. Apply the same standard to examples, headings, and comparisons.
- Explain close calls: When two arcs score similarly, describe the difference in emphasis—such as stronger emotional effect versus better integration with an open structure—rather than presenting a narrow score gap as a definitive verdict.
Why the ranking is a framework, not a verdict
The criteria make comparisons easier to follow, but they cannot remove taste from the judgment. One reader may prioritize emotional force; another may prefer a character whose development changes with player decisions. Games also vary in scale, structure, and the kind of character they are built to support. A credible ranking makes those choices visible, uses evidence that stays within its spoiler boundary, and avoids treating its ordering as an industry-wide standard.
