Thingiverse popularity can help you find models to try, but it cannot tell you which ones will print well. A useful ranking must identify the models actually printed, how they were selected, the printer and settings used, and what happened on that machine. Without those print records, it would be misleading to claim a firsthand ranking or name winners. Here’s a practical framework for evaluating popular Thingiverse models without confusing online attention with print quality.
What “top” means on Thingiverse
Thingiverse search provides several discovery signals, including Popular, Newest, Most Makes, Fresh Makes, and New, with time options such as All Time, 7 Days, 30 Days, and This Year. Those filters answer different questions: a model’s popularity, recent activity, or number of user-made versions are not interchangeable measures of printability or usefulness. [Thingiverse search]
Because these lists change, a ranking should name the exact filter and time window used to choose candidates, plus the date checked. For example, “selected from Popular, 30 Days, on [date]” is more reproducible than “the most popular models.” Likes and collections visible in results can explain why a model caught your attention, but they do not establish that it printed cleanly.
How to rank models you have actually printed
A firsthand ranking needs a defined set of models and real observations for each one. Record the Thingiverse page and creator, the selected filter and period, and the exact file or customized version used. Then document the printing conditions so readers can tell what your result does—and does not—show.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Printer and nozzle | Hardware affects the practical limits and settings for a print. |
| Filament and slicer profile or layer height | Material and profile affect detail, strength, and print time; report what you used rather than implying one profile suits every setup. |
| Orientation and support setting | These choices affect unsupported geometry, cleanup, surface finish, and sometimes integrity. |
| Duration, material use, and failed attempts | Include these only when you observed or recorded them; they help readers assess effort and repeatability. |
| Fit, function, finish, and cleanup | These are the actual outcomes that can support a judgment about usefulness or appearance. |
Rank models on criteria that matter to the reader: setup effort, printability, surface finish, usefulness or delight, and how clearly another person could reproduce your setup. State the basis for any score or ordering. One successful print is evidence about that printer, file, material, and settings—not proof that the model works reliably on every machine.
Prepare and inspect a model before printing
A downloaded model is not yet a printer-ready job. Prusa Research’s First print with PrusaSlicer (3.0.0) explains that you import the model into a slicer, orient it, add supports where needed, slice it into printer instructions, inspect the preview, and export the resulting file. As Prusa puts it: “Before printing your 3D file, it needs to be converted into a file type called .gcode or .bgcode.” The guide recommends knowing your printer model, including nozzle size, and filament material; its profile advice is specific to PrusaSlicer and should not be treated as a universal rule for every slicer or printer.

- Check the model files and intended dimensions. Confirm that the downloaded file or generated version is the one you intend to print.
- Set up the slicer for your equipment. Select the actual printer and nozzle, filament, and an appropriate profile.
- Choose orientation and supports. Rotate the model to suit its geometry and reduce avoidable support where practical.
- Inspect the sliced preview. Look for regions that begin in mid-air, missing or floating geometry, and a weak or inadequate first layer before exporting.
- Record the final setup and result. Keep the settings and observed outcome with the model’s exact page and file version.
Judge supports and orientation by the finished object
Prusa’s support guidance explains the basic issue: a layer that starts in mid-air needs support. Depending on the shape, changing orientation or splitting a model can reduce support requirements. Those choices are not purely about counting supports. Supported surfaces can look different from surfaces printed against the bed, and removing supports adds cleanup. Compare the visible finish, structural result, and effort after printing, not just the slicer’s support estimate. [Prusa support material guidance] [Prusa model orientation guidance]
Choose filament for the model’s intended use
PLA is one of the easier materials to print and can suit detailed decorative models and quick prototypes that do not need high mechanical, chemical, or temperature resistance. That makes it a reasonable starting point for many display-oriented Thingiverse models, not a universal choice for functional parts. Prusa’s PLA advice is framed around its own machines and materials; for a specific printer and spool, follow their compatible profile rather than copying a temperature from a different setup. - Cost-Effective Filament Bundle: Get 2 "1kg" spools of PLA filament for the price of 1 with classic black and white color
- Smooth and Stable Printing: Patented design and manufacturing process ensures smooth, clog-free printing
- Durable and Strong: Improved toughness and strength for printing functional parts
- Compatible with Most Printers: Works with 99% of FDM and FFF 3D printers with heated beds
- Renewable Material: Made from starch derived from renewable plant resources for environmental friendliness
For an outdoor or mechanically stressed part, material properties deserve particular attention. Prusa names PC, ASA, PETG, or similar materials as possibilities for those conditions, while noting that they may not reproduce small details as well as PLA. The appropriate material depends on the object and the printer’s capabilities, so evaluate the model’s purpose before treating a clean decorative print as evidence of functional suitability. Some Thingiverse models are customizable rather than a single fixed file. Thingiverse describes a workflow in which you select Customize, launch the app, adjust settings, create a Thing, and then download, print, or share it. If dimensions or other parameters change the result, record the customized options so your comparison reflects the version actually printed. [Thingiverse Customizer]
