The quickest reliable check depends on your water source: public-water customers should check their utility’s latest water-quality report and local alerts; private-well owners should use a state-certified laboratory; and anyone facing an active advisory should follow local officials’ instructions. Clear-looking water or a consumer strip cannot establish that water is safe to drink.
Choose the right check for your water source
| Situation | First check | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Public water, no current concern | Utility’s annual water-quality report and utility or local-government alerts | The report gives context about monitored water quality; alerts cover urgent conditions. Public water systems must meet EPA standards and notify customers if water does not meet them. CDC guidance |
| Public water with an unusual change or concern | Contact the water utility or local health department and ask what follow-up is appropriate | A change in color, taste, or smell may warrant advice or testing, but sensory checks cannot establish safety. CDC guidance |
| Private well | Arrange testing through a state-certified laboratory; ask local health officials about additional contaminants | CDC’s baseline recommendations cover total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. Locally relevant hazards may require additional tests. CDC well-testing guidance |
| Active boil-water advisory | Follow the exact local notice; use bottled or boiled water as directed | CDC advises boiling even filtered tap water during a boil-water advisory. General CDC guidance is a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet. CDC advisory guidance |
| Possible chemical contamination | Use another safe water source and contact local authorities | Boiling or disinfecting does not make water contaminated with fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials safe. CDC emergency guidance |
Nine out of 10 people in the United States get tap water from a public water system, according to the CDC in 2024. CDC: Water Quality and Your Health
How to check a public-water report and alerts
Find the utility’s report
Look on your water utility’s website for its annual water-quality report, sometimes called a Consumer Confidence Report. If you are unsure which utility serves your address, contact your local government or water provider. Use the report to understand monitored water quality, not as confirmation that no new issue has occurred since it was prepared.
Check for current notices
Sign up for alerts from your utility and local government, and check them when you notice a change or hear about a possible incident. For current precautions, an active local advisory takes precedence over routine report information. Public-water customers with a concern should ask the utility or health department what testing or action fits the specific situation. CDC prevention guidance

How often to test private-well water
Private wells are not covered by the rules that protect public water systems, so the owner is responsible for testing. CDC recommends testing at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH through a state-certified laboratory. Ask your local health department which additional germs or chemicals matter for your well’s location; the appropriate panel can vary by area. CDC well-testing guidance
A limited-reading strip or meter is not a general safety clearance. A test is useful only for the contaminants it measures, and CDC’s recommended route for well owners is locally informed testing at a state-certified lab.

What to do during a water advisory
Advisories address different hazards and do not all mean the same thing. Read the local notice closely and follow its instructions for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, bathing, and other uses. CDC distinguishes boil-water, do-not-drink, and do-not-use notices; a do-not-drink notice can require bottled water, while a do-not-use notice can require avoiding contact. CDC advisory overview

During a boil-water advisory
Follow the local notice. CDC’s general direction is to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet. CDC states, “Boiling is the best way to kill germs in water.” Filtered tap water still needs to be boiled during a boil-water advisory. CDC emergency guidance CDC advisory overview

When chemicals or fuel may be involved
Do not rely on boiling or household disinfection for suspected fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive materials. Use another safe source and contact local authorities for hazard-specific instructions. Boiling and disinfection also do not remove heavy metals, salts, or most chemicals, according to the EPA. EPA emergency disinfection guidance

Water that looks clear and tastes normal can still contain hazards that senses cannot detect. Conversely, an unusual color, taste, or smell does not identify the cause. Treat a change as a reason to contact the utility or health department or arrange appropriate testing—not as a diagnosis. CDC’s guidance points public-water users to utility information and private-well owners to state-certified laboratory testing; it does not establish a single strip or meter reading as proof that water is safe.
