To support monarchs through the season, provide locally appropriate milkweed for caterpillars and a succession of nectar-rich flowers for adults. Choose plants suited to your region and garden, stagger their bloom times from the growing season into fall migration, and avoid insecticides.

Plan for both caterpillars and adult monarchs

Milkweed is the host plant monarch caterpillars depend on; adult monarchs feed on nectar from many kinds of flowers. A useful habitat includes both, with nectar plants flowering even when milkweed is not. As Monarch Joint Venture explains, “The best habitat for monarchs contains a variety of native milkweed as well as nectar plants.”

Think in terms of a sequence of blooms, not one brief burst of flowers. Adults need nectar during breeding and migration, including fall migration. Caterpillars need milkweed while they are present. The right species and timing depend on where you live, so a nationwide planting recipe can be a poor fit for a particular garden.

Choose plants for your region and site

Start with regional lists rather than choosing plants solely because they are labeled “for monarchs.” The Xerces Society’s Monarch Nectar Plant Guides divide recommendations into 15 regions. The guides draw on nearly 24,000 observations of 358 native plant species; the page does not state the year for those figures. Xerces describes the guides as working documents, and suitability still depends on the conditions at your site.

Seed Needs Milkweed Seeds Variety Pack of 5 Perennial Flowers for Monarchs
  • Pollinator Attraction: Milkweed flowers are known for attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They produce a sweet nectar that is particularly enticing to monarch butterflies, which lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed plants.
  • 5 Packets: This collection includes Showy Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias speciosa), Pink Swamp Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias incarnata), White Swamp Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias incarnata), Orange Butterfly Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias tuberosa) & Common Milkweed Seeds (Asclepias syriaca.)
  • Ecological Importance: Milkweed is crucial for the survival of monarch butterflies, providing not only nectar but also foliage for caterpillars to feed on. The presence of milkweed in an ecosystem supports biodiversity and is vital for the monarch's life cycle.
  • Quality: All Milkweed seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.

For milkweed options, consult Monarch Watch’s regional milkweed and waystation guidance. Its resources encourage native plants, which typically need less maintenance and benefit local wildlife. Xerces also announced Plants for Monarchs on July 30, 2026: a location-based tool that suggests native host and nectar plants using location and site preferences, with supplier links.

Check the specific species against your garden’s sun and soil. Monarch Watch says a site should ideally receive at least six hours of sun a day. Many native milkweeds and nectar plants prefer well-drained soil, while some species are suited to wetter ground. Plant close enough to offer shelter, but leave room for plants to grow rather than crowding them. The Xerces Mid-Atlantic nectar guide, for example, is a regional working list and cautions that suitability varies by site; its plant recommendations should not be assumed to fit other regions.

Build a season-long planting

Use a succession of nectar flowers

Select several annual, biennial, or perennial nectar plants whose bloom periods overlap or follow one another through the growing season and fall migration. Use the regional guide or location tool to identify suitable choices and check each plant’s expected flowering period for your area. This is more reliable than assuming one plant will feed adults all season.

Add locally appropriate milkweed

Include milkweed that is native or otherwise appropriate to your region and site. Monarch Watch recommends at least 10 milkweed plants for a Monarch Waystation, ideally divided among two or more species; it also says a larger planting of one species can be sufficient. Treat this as a waystation recommendation, not a universal minimum for every garden or a guarantee that monarchs will visit.

Monarch Watch recommends several nectar species that bloom sequentially or continuously through the growing season and fall migration. Its waystation guidance is a practical planning reference, not evidence that a particular garden will produce a specific monarch outcome.

Plant milkweed seeds at the right time

Many native milkweed seeds germinate better after a period of cold, moist conditions, known as stratification or vernalization. The easiest approach for many species is to sow outdoors in fall, allowing winter conditions to provide that exposure. Spring sowing may require artificial stratification in a refrigerator. Follow the instructions for the particular species and seed lot: requirements are not identical for every milkweed.

Keep pesticides out of the habitat

Avoid insecticide use in or near the planting. When buying plants, ask the nursery whether they were treated with systemic pesticides; do not assume a plant is pesticide-free unless the supplier can confirm it. Monarch Watch recommends pesticide-free native plants and points gardeners to local nurseries, native plant society sales, Extension Master Gardener sales, and its Milkweed Market. These are sourcing leads, so verify treatment practices with the seller.

HOME GROWN Common Milkweed 150 Flower Seeds Asclepias syriaca
  • MONARCH BUTTERFLY HABITAT: Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is a host plant for monarch butterfly larvae. Planting this native wildflower helps support monarch populations by providing a food source for caterpillars. Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9.
  • FRAGRANT BLOOMS: This variety grows 3–5 ft. tall and produces scented pink to mauve flower clusters, 2–4 inches wide. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. The flowers attract various pollinators, including native bees, honeybees, hummingbirds, and hoverflies.
  • PERENNIAL GROWTH HABIT: As a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 3–9, common milkweed typically returns each year through rhizomes and natural reseeding. Seeds are open-pollinated.
  • PLANTING AND GERMINATION: Seeds can be direct sown in fall to allow for natural cold-stratification, or cold-stratified in the refrigerator for 30 days prior to spring planting. Plant seeds 1/8–1/4 inch deep in well-drained soil. Germination generally occurs at 60–70°F.
  • ADAPTABLE TO VARIOUS SOILS: Once established, common milkweed is drought-tolerant and performs well in average to poor, well-drained soil. Requires little supplemental watering or fertilization once established. Seed pods may remain through the fall to provide interest in the landscape.

Monarch Joint Venture also offers advice on where to find milkweed.

Special caution near California overwintering sites

If you garden near a California monarch overwintering site, Monarch Joint Venture advises planting milkweed only when that species historically occurred in the region and the garden is more than one mile from an overwintering site. It says native nectar flowers from early spring through fall remain useful. This guidance applies to that California context; it is not a general restriction for monarch gardens elsewhere. See the organization’s California overwintering-site guidance.
