Do not buy gold or leveling services from anyone outside Blizzard. Those offers can be used to steal your Battle.net login and payment details, then strip characters, run botting operations, or advertise more unauthorized services from your account. Protect the account with a unique password, Blizzard Authenticator, phone notifications, and a passkey where available. Treat unsolicited links, addon downloads, and messages claiming to be Game Masters as untrusted until you verify them through Battle.net or Blizzard Support.

If you already clicked a suspicious link, stop using it, begin Blizzard Account Recovery from an address you enter yourself, secure the computer, then change credentials and contact support about missing items or gold.

Why gold-selling offers put both your account and card at risk

Blizzard’s account-security guidance is direct: “Don’t use gold selling or power-leveling services.” Its support policy likewise says, “Do not solicit leveling services, and do not buy gold from non-Blizzard sources.” The risk is not limited to losing the money you intended to spend. A seller may ask you to sign in on a look-alike page, install a program, share credentials, or hand over payment information. Those details can be reused against your Battle.net account and other sites where you used the same password.

Compromised accounts are valuable because they can be emptied quickly and then used as infrastructure. Blizzard describes stolen accounts being stripped of characters and valuables, used in botting operations, and used to advertise unauthorized services to the account holder’s friends, guild, and other players. A message that appears to come from a familiar character can therefore be the result of an already-compromised account rather than proof that the offer is legitimate.

There is no legitimate need to provide your Battle.net password to a seller, guild member, “support agent,” or addon installer. If a transaction requires credentials, remote access, an executable file, or a login outside Blizzard’s normal account flow, abandon it.

How WoW phishing scams are presented

Fake Game Masters and support staff

Scammers may claim that your account is about to be suspended, that you have won a reward, or that a verification step is required. They copy Blizzard logos, use official-sounding language, and create urgency so you act before checking the claim. A real-looking name or logo in a message is not authentication.

Genuine in-game Game Master contact has identifiable indicators: an in-game GM Chat Request indicator and a name indicator. If a message does not use those indicators, do not treat it as a GM conversation. Blizzard Customer Support states: “Blizzard employees will never ask for your password or ask you to provide your account credentials through Discord.” The same principle applies to other unofficial chats: a person claiming to represent Blizzard should not need your password, one-time code, or recovery information.

Discord, guild, and alternate-character impersonation

Phishing can arrive in Discord, in-game chat, email, or a private message from an alternate character. The sender may copy a guildmate’s name, use a recently created character, or say that a friend has already tested a “safe” gold service. Verify through a channel you open independently. Ask the supposed guildmate in a known conversation, or navigate to Battle.net or Blizzard Support yourself instead of replying to the message.

Rewards, beta access, and penalty threats

Promises of beta access, free items, discounted gold, or account rewards are common lures. So are threats that you must “appeal” a suspension immediately. A real account action should be checked in your Battle.net account and through Blizzard’s support pages, not through a login form supplied in the threatening message. Urgency is a reason to slow down, not a reason to skip verification.

Look-alike login pages

A phishing page can reproduce Blizzard’s colors, wording, and sign-in layout while sending the credentials to someone else. The visible text of a link is not enough; the destination must be checked. Blizzard’s account-recovery guidance says: “Double-check the URL of every link before you click it. If it doesn’t direct to a blizzard.com or battle.net address, do not click it.” Treat misspellings, extra words, unfamiliar subdomains, URL shorteners, and redirects as disqualifying. When in doubt, close the message and type the known Blizzard or Battle.net address yourself.

Malicious addons and “helper” programs

Scammers sometimes package malware as an addon installer, optimization utility, or leveling tool. Use only addon sources you trust, keep the browser and security software updated, and never run an executable merely because a download claims it is required for an addon. An addon that asks you to disable security protection, enter your Battle.net password into a separate window, or launch an unexpected executable is a stop signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify a message or link before you interact

  1. Pause. Do not reply, click, download, or provide a code while the message is creating urgency.
  2. Inspect the destination. Check the full address rather than the displayed label. Blizzard’s guidance identifies blizzard.com and battle.net as the expected domains. Anything else should be treated as unsafe.
  3. Open the official site independently. Use a bookmark you created previously or type the address yourself. Check account notices and support options there; never use the message’s link to “confirm” the claim.
  4. Verify the person through a second channel. For a guildmate or friend, contact them in a conversation you already trust. For a supposed Game Master, look for the in-game GM Chat Request and name indicators.
  5. Refuse credential requests. Do not disclose a password, Authenticator approval, one-time code, recovery detail, or payment information in chat or Discord.

Do not assume a link is safe because it uses HTTPS or displays a padlock. Encryption protects the connection to a site; it does not prove that the site belongs to Blizzard. Domain verification and independent navigation are the checks that matter here.

Protection controls and what each one covers

Layer the controls instead of relying on one “security app.” Blizzard documents Authenticator, phone notifications, unique passwords, and passkeys as account controls. Browser updates, security software, and addon hygiene protect the computer that holds your session and credentials.

Control What it contributes Phishing and recovery limits Coverage
Unique Battle.net password Prevents a password leaked from another site from automatically unlocking Battle.net. It does not stop a convincing fake login page. If the device or mailbox is compromised, use Account Recovery. Battle.net account; use separate credentials everywhere else.
Blizzard Authenticator Adds an additional sign-in approval or verification step supported directly by Blizzard. It cannot make a phishing page legitimate. Plan how you will recover access if the phone or authenticator device is lost; Blizzard’s guidance does not promise an instant device-loss bypass. Battle.net account.
Phone notifications Provides account alerts so unexpected activity can be noticed sooner. Alerts are detection, not permission to approve a suspicious request. Respond through Battle.net or Blizzard Support, not through the alert’s link. Battle.net account notifications.
Passkey, where available Uses a device-based sign-in method designed to resist password replay on look-alike pages. Availability and recovery behavior depend on the account and device. Keep another approved recovery route before removing an old device. Battle.net sign-in; it does not automatically protect unrelated accounts.
Browser and security-software updates Reduces exposure to known browser and malware weaknesses. Updates cannot identify every scam message. A suspicious download still requires a scan and credential review. The computer and other accounts used on it.
Trusted addon sources Reduces the chance that an addon package contains a credential stealer or other malware. Source reputation is not a guarantee; never run an unexpected executable or enter credentials into an addon window. WoW installation and computer, rather than just Battle.net.

Third-party security keys and software can have different compatibility and recovery requirements. Verify that a product works with Battle.net and that you understand its recovery process before depending on it. Blizzard’s documented controls are the appropriate baseline for a Battle.net account.

Set up a safer Battle.net account

1. Replace reused credentials

Create a long, unique password for Battle.net that you have never used on a forum, game site, email account, or addon service. Do not share it with guildmates, boosting services, or anyone claiming to be support. If the old password was reused anywhere, change it on those other sites as well; otherwise a separate breach can put the new Battle.net account at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the change from a computer you trust. If you suspect malware, follow the compromise procedure below before entering a replacement password.

2. Enable Blizzard Authenticator

In your Battle.net account’s security settings, add Blizzard Authenticator and complete the enrollment prompts in the official app. Confirm that the approval request or code appears when you sign in. Do not approve a prompt you did not initiate. Unexpected prompts can indicate that someone has your password and is trying to complete the second step.

3. Turn on phone notifications

Enable the phone-notification option shown in your Battle.net security settings. These alerts can reveal an attempted login or account change while it is happening. Open the account by navigating to Battle.net yourself; do not use a link inside an alert or message to investigate.

4. Add a passkey when Battle.net offers it

If passkeys are available for your account and region, enroll one from the official Battle.net security controls on a device you control. Keep an alternate recovery method and do not remove the only device that can authenticate you until the replacement works. A passkey is not a reason to ignore suspicious messages, and it does not secure your email, Discord, or other game accounts automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Protect the email account behind Battle.net

Your email account can be used to reset or confirm access. Give it a unique password and its own multifactor protection, and review unexpected reset notices from the email provider directly. Blizzard will not need your email password in a chat or Discord conversation.

Keep the computer and addons clean

  • Install browser, operating-system, and security-software updates instead of postponing them indefinitely.
  • Download addons only from sources you recognize and can verify. Avoid packages delivered through a private message or a gold-selling site.
  • Never run an executable during addon installation unless you independently know what it is, why it is required, and who published it. A normal addon should not require you to disable your security software or type your Battle.net password into a separate installer.
  • Use a current security scan after opening a suspicious page, running an untrusted file, or installing an addon from an unknown source.
  • Do not install remote-control software at a stranger’s request. A “support” person who needs to operate your computer can capture passwords and Authenticator approvals.

These measures protect more than WoW. A keylogger or browser thief can target email, banking, social accounts, and other games even if your Battle.net password is unique.

What to do if you clicked a WoW phishing link

If you opened the page but entered nothing

Close the page and do not download or run anything it offered. If a file downloaded, delete it without opening it and run a security scan. Review your browser’s saved-password and download activity from the browser’s own settings. If you only viewed the page and did not download, execute, or submit information, continue to use independently opened Blizzard pages and watch for unexpected account alerts.

If you entered a password, code, or payment detail

  1. Stop using the suspicious site. Do not return to it to “change” the password; that can disclose the replacement too.
  2. Start Blizzard Account Recovery. Open Blizzard Support or Battle.net by typing the address yourself, then choose the account-recovery route.
  3. Secure the computer before submitting new credentials. Update the browser and security software and run a scan if the page, addon, or download could have delivered malware. Use a clean device for recovery if you cannot establish that the original computer is safe.
  4. Change the Battle.net password. Make it unique and stop reusing the exposed password on every other service where it appeared.
  5. Recheck account controls. Confirm Authenticator, phone notifications, passkey enrollment, and the email address in the official account settings. Do not approve unfamiliar Authenticator requests.
  6. Open a Blizzard support ticket. Explain when the compromise occurred and identify missing gold, characters, or items. Support can review the account and the recovery options available to you.
  7. Report and block the scammer. Use Blizzard’s in-game or support reporting tools for phishing and impersonation, and block the account or message so you do not continue the conversation.

If you ran an executable or suspicious addon

Disconnect the affected computer from sensitive sign-ins while you investigate it. Run a full security scan using updated security software, remove the untrusted program or addon, and update the operating system and browser. Then perform the account-recovery and password-change steps from a clean device if possible. Because malware can steal credentials for multiple services, change any reused password on those services after the device is clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If gold, items, or characters are missing

Begin Account Recovery even if you can still log in. Secure the computer, change the password, and submit a support ticket describing the missing property and the approximate time you noticed it. Do not try to recover losses by buying more gold or by paying a person who promises a faster restoration; that creates another opportunity for theft.

How to report a fake Game Master or phishing account

Do not argue with the impersonator or warn them that you are reporting them. Save the message details you can safely retain, then use the in-game reporting and blocking controls. For a Discord or email impersonation, use that service’s report function and report the incident to Blizzard through support opened independently.

A genuine GM interaction should show the official in-game indicators described above. If someone asks for a password, account credentials, Authenticator code, payment, or a click on an external login page, report the interaction as phishing or impersonation. Blizzard’s support pages, rather than the sender’s contact details, are the authority for deciding whether an account action is real.

Common mistakes that let a scam succeed

  • Trusting branding: Logos, colors, screenshots, and a familiar character name can all be copied.
  • Checking only the beginning of a URL: Read the actual domain. A page can contain the word “Blizzard” while being hosted elsewhere.
  • Approving an unexpected Authenticator request: A second factor protects you only when you reject prompts you did not start.
  • Using the same password everywhere: A breach on an unrelated site becomes a Battle.net breach when credentials are reused.
  • Installing an executable for an addon: Stop when an addon package asks for a program, remote access, or disabled security protection.
  • Waiting after a compromise: Stolen accounts can be used to send convincing messages to friends and guildmates. Start recovery as soon as you suspect exposure.
  • Trying to recover through the scammer: No seller, “GM,” or Discord helper can legitimately restore your account by collecting more credentials.

A practical decision guide

Situation Safe response Do not do
A stranger offers cheap gold or leveling Decline, block, and report the message. Do not visit the seller’s site, install its tool, or provide a login.
A message claims to be a GM Check for the official in-game GM Chat Request and name indicators; verify through Blizzard Support opened independently. Do not give a password, code, payment, or click the supplied link.
A guildmate sends an urgent reward or beta link Contact the person through a known channel and inspect the destination before any click. Do not trust the display name or copied logo.
An addon asks for an executable Cancel the installation, remove the download, and use a trusted addon source. Do not disable security software or run the file to “test” it.
You entered credentials on a look-alike page Start Account Recovery, secure the computer, change the password from a clean device, and contact support. Do not return to the page to change the password.
Your account is missing gold or items Secure the account and computer, then submit a detailed Blizzard support ticket. Do not buy more gold or pay a third party promising restoration.

The protection routine to keep

Use a unique Battle.net password and protect the email account behind it. Enable Blizzard Authenticator, phone notifications, and a passkey where available. Keep the browser and security software current, obtain addons only from trusted sources, and refuse unexpected executables. Before every click, verify that the destination is a genuine blizzard.com or battle.net address. If a link, seller, or supposed GM creates pressure, leave the conversation and verify through Battle.net or Blizzard Support yourself.
