If you entered your PSN password, scanned an unfamiliar sign-in QR code, authorized an app, or see an account change you did not make, treat the account as exposed now. Change the PSN sign-in method, secure the email address used for recovery, add a passkey or 2-step verification, remove unfamiliar app access, review transactions, and contact PlayStation Support if you cannot regain control. If you only visited a store without entering credentials, authorizing anything, or seeing suspicious activity, a compromise is not established; perform the checks below rather than assuming the worst.
Start by identifying what actually happened
“Unofficial PS5 store” can describe several different events: a web page that requested your PSN details, a QR code that opened a sign-in prompt, a third-party app you approved, or software installed on the console. The response depends on which of those occurred. PlayStation warns users not to share account details with untrusted sites or QR codes, but its guidance does not say that every visit to an unofficial store automatically compromises an account. Use the most serious applicable row in this table.

Look for unrecognized password-reset messages, email-address changes, new devices, purchases, subscriptions, or messages from PlayStation that you did not initiate. Do not click links in a suspicious email; open PlayStation Account Management or the PS5 settings directly.

When credentials or an approval may have been exposed, take these actions in order. Use a device you control, with an up-to-date operating system and browser, and avoid signing in through the unofficial store again.

- Change the PSN sign-in method. On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security, then choose the option to change your sign-in method. You can also make the change in Account Management. PlayStation says security-setting changes apply across your devices and consoles. Use a new credential that has never been used on another site, or set up a passkey.
- Secure the recovery email account. Change that mailbox’s password to a unique one and enable its available multi-factor protection. The email account can be used to reset PSN access, so protecting PSN while leaving the mailbox exposed does not close the recovery path.
- Add a second sign-in check. Set up a passkey or 2-step verification (2SV). If you choose 2SV, save the backup codes somewhere private and accessible when your phone is unavailable.
- Remove unfamiliar app access. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps and unlink services you did not approve.
- Check money and subscriptions. Review PlayStation Store transaction history and active subscriptions. If a charge is unexplained, follow PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance and contact Support. Removing stored payment methods can reduce the chance of additional unwanted purchases while you investigate.
If you cannot change the sign-in method, an email address was changed without your permission, or someone is still using the account, stop trying random recovery links and use the official phished-account and unauthorized-charge support path.
Change the PSN sign-in method correctly
From a PS5
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account, then Security.
- Change the sign-in method, or begin passkey setup if that is the method you want to use.
- Sign in again on devices that ask for the new credential and reject any prompt you did not initiate.
The exact labels can vary by system-software language and region, but the security path is documented by PlayStation at How to change your security settings on PlayStation. A password used on the unofficial site should not be reused for PSN, your email, or any other service.
From the web
Open Account Management by typing the PlayStation address yourself, sign in, and open the account security settings. If the site asks for a code that you did not request, close it and begin again from the official address. A password change is also the practical way to sign out devices you cannot currently access; PlayStation states that changing the password signs the account out of inaccessible consoles.
Protect the email address that can recover PSN
Your PSN sign-in ID is commonly an email address, and recovery messages go there. Change the mailbox password if you entered it into the unofficial store, reused it elsewhere, or received an unexpected notice that the PSN email address or password changed. Use a password that is different from the new PSN credential, and turn on the email provider’s strongest available multi-factor option.

- Review recent sign-ins and sessions in the email provider’s own security page.
- Remove forwarding rules, filters, recovery addresses, or phone numbers you did not add.
- Search for PlayStation security messages, including deleted and spam folders, and keep copies of messages that document unauthorized changes.
- Never send a PSN password or one-time code to someone claiming to be support. Start at PlayStation’s official support site instead.
If an attacker controls the mailbox, they may be able to undo a PSN password change. Secure the email first when you suspect mailbox access, then repeat the PSN sign-in-method change.
Choose a passkey or password plus 2-step verification
PlayStation supports both passkeys and 2SV. A passkey uses a credential protected by a compatible device, while 2SV keeps a password and asks for a code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. Neither option removes the need to protect your recovery email and backup information.

Set up 2SV
- Open PlayStation Account Management or the PS5 security settings.
- Select the 2-step verification option and choose SMS or an authenticator app, following the prompts described in PlayStation’s 2SV guide.
- Record the backup codes in a password manager or another private location that is not the compromised device.
- Sign out and test a fresh sign-in while you still have access to the chosen phone or authenticator.
Set up a passkey
Start passkey enrollment from the same security settings and follow the device prompt. Confirm that you can unlock the passkey device and have a recovery route before removing your only password-based method. If you rely on password protection at checkout to stop household purchases, note PlayStation’s warning that this setting cannot be used with passkeys; choose the account setup that matches your recovery and purchase-control needs.
Remove third-party access you did not approve
An app authorization can remain active even after you change a password. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Authorized Apps, select an unfamiliar service, and unlink it. The authorized-apps instructions explain the current controls. If you do not recognize an app’s name, unlink it rather than granting it another approval; you can reconnect a legitimate service later through its official sign-in flow.

After unlinking, inspect the account for profile, privacy, trophy, message, and purchase changes. An app that was authorized legitimately can still have been taken over, so investigate the date and context of every unfamiliar authorization.
Check purchases, subscriptions, and payment methods
Open PlayStation Store transaction history and compare every recent purchase, wallet top-up, subscription renewal, and downloadable-content charge with your own records. Check the payment account or card statement as well, because a delayed bank notification may appear after the store transaction.
- For a charge you recognize, no further payment action is required; keep the receipt.
- For a charge you do not recognize, do not make another purchase to “test” the account. Follow PlayStation’s unauthorized-payment instructions and contact Support.
- Remove stored cards or other payment methods while you resolve unexplained activity if doing so will not interrupt a service you intentionally use.
- Review active subscriptions and cancel only those you did not authorize; cancellation does not by itself resolve a fraudulent charge.
Turn on password-at-checkout protection if your account uses a password. PlayStation says this protection is unavailable when passkeys are set up, so it is an option for password-based accounts rather than an additional passkey control.
Sign out devices you cannot inspect
If you used the unofficial store on a friend’s, shared, public, or otherwise uncontrolled device, change the PSN password even if you believe you logged out. PlayStation says a password change signs the account out of consoles you cannot access.

You can also deactivate consoles remotely through Account Management > Device Management > PlayStation Consoles > Deactivate All Devices. This is an all-console action: it does not let you select one individual console, and PlayStation limits it to once every six months. Use it when you need a broad reset, then sign back in only on consoles you control. The exact limitation and path are listed in PlayStation’s console-deactivation guide.
Because remote deactivation affects every console, record which devices you own and be ready to activate your primary PS5 again. Do not wait six months to contact Support if an unknown console continues to appear or purchases continue.

Use PlayStation’s compromised-account recovery process if you cannot reset the sign-in method, the recovery email was replaced, 2SV codes are unavailable, or the account shows changes you cannot reverse. Have the sign-in ID, approximate dates, transaction details, console information, and copies of suspicious messages ready. Never publish those details in a forum or send them to an unofficial “recovery” service.

Understand the rules around unofficial software
Visiting a third-party storefront is not the same fact pattern as installing software that bypasses console security. The US PlayStation Terms of Service prohibit specified unauthorized software, hardware, and security circumvention and describe possible restrictions. The PS5 System Software License Agreement contains additional software-use terms.
Those documents do not establish that every person who visited an unofficial store will be suspended. The outcome can depend on the software, activity, account, and region, so do not promise that an account is safe or that a particular penalty will occur. Follow the rules that apply in your country and remove unauthorized software rather than attempting to hide its use.
PlayStation’s US terms state: “All users should safeguard their Account sign-in ID, password, passkey, or other authenticating information and take steps to prevent access to your Account by other persons on any shared devices.”

If you only browsed the store
When you entered no PSN details, scanned no sign-in QR code, authorized no app, installed nothing, and see no suspicious activity, the cautious response is verification rather than panic:
- Check PlayStation and email alerts for sign-ins, security-setting changes, or purchases you did not initiate.
- Review Authorized Apps and unlink anything unfamiliar.
- Inspect transaction history and subscriptions.
- Confirm that your email account has no unknown sessions, forwarding rules, or recovery changes.
- Enable a passkey or 2SV if you have not already done so, and keep recovery information safe.
No official source cited here says that a store visit alone proves compromise. That is a limited conclusion, not a guarantee that an unknown site is safe; stop using it if it asks for credentials, QR-code approval, downloads, or unusual permissions.
Keep the account protected after the incident
- Use a unique PSN credential and a different unique email password.
- Keep the PS5 system software, phone, computer, browser, and authenticator app updated.
- Approve sign-ins only when you initiated them and can identify the device and domain.
- Store 2SV backup codes or passkey recovery information offline or in a trusted password manager.
- Review authorized apps, sign-in alerts, transactions, and subscriptions periodically, not only after an incident.
- Set password-at-checkout protection on password-based accounts when it suits your household; remember that PlayStation says it is incompatible with passkeys.
- Use official PlayStation support pages for recovery. Ignore anyone who requests your password, passkey, backup code, or payment-card details to “restore” the account.
The practical goal is to close every route an unofficial store might have exposed: the PSN credential, the recovery mailbox, an active app authorization, an already signed-in console, and the payment account. Once those checks are complete, continue monitoring for new alerts and escalate to PlayStation Support if anything changes again.
