Protect your phone by locking it with a strong passcode, installing updates promptly, securing the accounts connected to it, and preparing for loss or theft. These steps reduce common risks; no setting can guarantee a phone is perfectly secure. Menu names and available features vary by iPhone or Android model, operating-system version, and online account.
How do you lock down your phone?
1. Set a strong screen lock
Use a passcode of at least six digits and set the phone to lock automatically when you are not using it. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises: “Use at least a 6-digit passcode.” A lock makes casual access harder if someone gets your phone. Face or fingerprint unlock can be convenient, but your passcode remains the fallback protection.
2. Turn on automatic system updates
Operating-system updates can include security fixes. Enable automatic updates if your device offers that setting, and install updates promptly. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) puts it plainly: “Don’t delay software updates.” Update labels and timing controls differ across devices.

Keep the apps you rely on current, using the update controls in your phone’s trusted app store. Uninstall apps you no longer need: removing them reduces the number of apps that may retain access to information. Review app access as well as the app’s age; an update alone does not make every permission appropriate.

How do you protect your accounts if your phone is compromised?
4. Use strong, unique passwords
Use a different strong password for each important account. Reusing one password means a password exposed in one breach may put other accounts at risk. A password manager can help generate and keep track of unique passwords; choose one that fits your needs rather than trying to memorize the same password everywhere.
5. Turn on multi-factor authentication
Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for email, financial, social, and other important accounts. MFA adds another sign-in check beyond your password, such as an authenticator-app approval or a code. Any MFA is generally better than password-only access, but methods differ: CISA identifies FIDO/WebAuthn as phishing-resistant. If available for your account, device, and browser, a FIDO2 security key is an optional stronger choice—not a requirement for everyone. Check compatibility before relying on any method, and keep recovery options current.

How do you prepare for a lost or stolen phone?
6. Back up important data
Choose a backup method you can access when needed. Cloud backup is convenient for automatic, off-device copies; an external drive gives you a physical copy, but you need to connect it, protect it, and keep track of it. CISA supports both vetted cloud storage and external drives without naming a preferred provider. Whichever you choose, verify that you can recover the data. If you back up to an external drive, disconnect it when the backup is complete and store it safely.

7. Enable the built-in lost-phone feature
Before the phone goes missing, turn on its built-in location and remote-control features, including remote lock and erase where available. These controls can help you locate or protect a missing device. They do a different job from backups: remote erase removes data from the phone, while a backup preserves a copy for recovery. Confirm you know how to reach the feature from another device or account.

How do you reduce risk from apps and permissions?
8. Install apps from trusted stores
Use the official app store for your device where possible, and check that an app’s source is trustworthy before installing it. Avoid installing apps from unfamiliar sources. CISA’s consumer mobile-device checklist recommends: “Grant least-privilege access to all apps.” Be cautious if an app asks for access that does not fit what it does.
9. Review permissions and limit personal information
Check which apps can use your location and access personal information, such as contacts, photos, or the microphone. Revoke access an app does not need. Where available, choose location access only while an app is in use rather than allowing it all the time. The exact permission controls depend on your phone and software version.

How can you avoid suspicious texts and links?
10. Pause before acting on unexpected messages
Phishing messages try to prompt a click, attachment opening, or disclosure of personal details. Treat unexpected requests as suspicious, even if a message appears to come from a familiar organization. Do not enter account credentials through a link in an unexpected text or open an unexpected attachment. Instead, open the service’s app or type its known web address yourself, then check for a real alert. Report or delete suspicious messages.
What should you do before trading in or giving away a phone?
For a planned upgrade, the FTC’s January 2025 guidance recommends removing SIM and SD cards, unlinking accounts and trusted-device associations, and factory-resetting the old phone before transfer or trade-in. Back up anything you need first; a factory reset is not a backup.

What if you suspect someone is monitoring your phone?
These everyday steps are not a tailored safety plan for targeted surveillance. If you suspect stalkerware or monitoring by an abusive person, changing settings or searching for help on the monitored phone could alert them. The FTC advises using a safer device and seeking specialized support before making changes.
