Protecting an Old School RuneScape (OSRS) account and recovering progress after a server rollback are separate problems. A strong password, secured email, authenticator and careful linked-login checks can reduce the chance that someone takes your character. They cannot undo a Jagex server event or restore a character state that the game service has rolled back. First identify which problem you have, then use the matching Jagex process.
The procedures below follow Jagex Support guidance reviewed on October 11, 2026. Support labels and recovery requirements can change, so use the linked Jagex pages when you begin a recovery.
Account takeover and server rollback are not the same problem
Players often describe any missing items, levels or recent activity as a “rollback,” but two very different events can produce that feeling:

This is an access and ownership problem.
- Server-side rollback: Jagex restores game data to an earlier state after an incident. Multiple players may lose recent progress even though nobody accessed their accounts. This is a game-service data problem.
Account security measures address the first case. They do not create a player-controlled backup of OSRS character data, and Jagex’s security and recovery pages do not establish a general self-service way to reverse a server rollback. If an incident announcement identifies a rollback, follow that incident’s instructions or contact official support; do not submit a password-recovery form expecting it to restore game state.

Identify your account type before changing anything
Jagex now recommends upgrading legacy accounts to a Jagex Account. The sign-in screen, account settings and recovery route differ depending on whether the character has been upgraded. Jagex’s own recommendation is to upgrade: “The best recommendation we can make to any player who is concerned about account security is to upgrade to a Jagex account.” Read the current Jagex Account security tips before making changes.

If you are unsure, look at the account-management page you normally use and the wording on the login screen. Do not keep attempting unrelated recovery forms: repeated attempts can send you down the wrong support path.
How to protect an OSRS account from takeover
Use a unique password for the account and its email
Choose a password that has not been used on any other service. Jagex’s Jagex Account guidance allows passwords from 8 to 64 characters and suggests using a password manager to create and store unique credentials. Length and uniqueness matter because a password exposed in a breach on another site can be tried automatically against your game account.
- Create a random, unique password of at least the length accepted by your account screen (Jagex Account passwords are documented as 8–64 characters).
- Store it in a reputable password manager rather than reusing a memorable password across games, email and social accounts.
- Give the email account used for sign-in its own strong, unique password. Turn on that email provider’s available two-step security.
- Never send your password, one-time code or backup code to another person, including someone claiming to be a moderator or support agent.
Securing only the game password is insufficient. Someone who controls the sign-in email can request resets or intercept security messages, so treat the mailbox as part of the account perimeter.
Enable two-step authentication and protect the backup codes
Jagex Accounts use email codes as a default two-step method and can also use an authenticator app. An authenticator adds a time-based code generated on your device, so a stolen password alone is not enough to sign in.

- Open Jagex Account management and the two-step authentication settings described in Jagex’s setup guide.
- Enroll an authenticator app if you want an additional method beyond email codes.
- Generate the account’s backup codes and save them somewhere private and separate from the phone or computer that holds the authenticator.
- Store the codes in a password manager or another offline location that only you can access. Do not photograph them to an automatically synced public album or paste them into chat.
Jagex states that a Jagex Account can generate 10 backup codes. Each code works once, bypasses two-step authentication and grants full account access. In practical terms, each code is an account key: anyone who obtains one can use it, so never share it. After using a code, configure another authentication method. You can replace the set in account settings; replacing it invalidates the previous set.
Audit linked Google, Steam and other sign-ins
Review every third-party login linked to the character. Remove anything you do not recognize, even if the main password still works. Jagex warns that a hijacker can link a Google or Steam login and retain access after you change the account password: “If someone hijacks your RuneScape character, they can link their own third party login (such as through their Google or Steam account) and access your account even if you change your password.” This is a documented attack route, not a claim that every takeover uses it.
Check the linked-account page after any suspicious event and remove unknown entries. Then review active sessions and end sessions you do not recognize. Change the Jagex or legacy password only after securing the email account and the device you use to sign in; otherwise an attacker could capture the new credential or regain access through an existing session.
Secure the computer or phone used for OSRS
Jagex identifies phishing, reused passwords, compromised email and malware as possible routes to account compromise. Apply operating-system and browser updates, keep security software enabled, and uninstall programs or browser extensions you do not trust. Scan a device that may have malware before entering a new password.
- Open links by typing the official Jagex or RuneScape address yourself instead of following an unexpected direct message.
- Check the domain and HTTPS connection before entering credentials.
- Ignore “free membership,” giveaway and urgent-ban messages that demand a login or one-time code.
- Do not install an unverified client, script or plugin because a stranger promises faster progress.
No security setting makes an account invulnerable. The goal is to remove common paths to access and to limit the damage if one control fails.

What to do if someone may have accessed the account
Contain a suspected takeover in an order that prevents the intruder from simply taking the account back.

- Secure the email first. Change its password from a clean device, enable its available two-step protection, and check forwarding rules, recovery addresses and recent sign-ins for changes you did not make.
- Secure the device. Disconnect or scan a computer or phone that may have malware. Do not change the game password on a device you no longer trust.
- End unfamiliar sessions. In Jagex Account management, sign out sessions you do not recognize. If you use a legacy account, follow the session and security controls available for that account.
- Remove unknown linked logins. Delete unfamiliar Google, Steam or other third-party connections before assuming a password change solved the problem.
- Change the game credential. Set a new, unique password and confirm that the email and two-step settings now belong to you.
- Record evidence. Save dates, unfamiliar emails, character changes, transaction notices and support case numbers. This helps you describe the incident accurately without guessing.
If you can still sign in, do not log out until you have confirmed that the email, two-step method, backup codes and linked accounts are under your control. If access is already gone, use the recovery route for the account type instead of continuing normal sign-in attempts.
How to recover a Jagex Account when access is lost
If you still control the email but lost the authenticator
Start with the Jagex Account two-step authentication process. Try an unused backup code if you saved one. Each code is single-use and provides full access, so treat the successful sign-in as an emergency entry: immediately set up a new authentication method and replace the backup-code set. If you have no usable code or cannot access the configured email, use the recovery options presented by Jagex Support rather than the legacy RuneScape appeal.
If the password or email may have been changed
Secure the mailbox and device first, then use the Jagex Account sign-in and support flow. Do not create a second account or attach a new third-party login in an attempt to “claim” the character. A new login does not prove ownership of the existing character and can make the account history harder to explain.
When contacting support, state which control is missing: password, email access, authenticator, backup code or an active unknown session. Include the character name and relevant dates only as identifying context; do not send passwords or backup codes. Follow any identity or ownership questions exactly as presented in the current support form.

How to recover a legacy RuneScape account
Legacy accounts have a separate process. Jagex’s legacy authentication guidance covers Old School RuneScape and directs upgraded accounts to the Jagex Account article instead.
Try the normal password reset first
- Use the login name or login email associated with the legacy account.
- Request the password reset through the official RuneScape account page.
- Check the correct mailbox, including spam or filtered folders, without clicking links in unrelated messages.
- If the reset succeeds, sign in, change the password to a unique one and review the account’s authenticator and other security settings.
The in-game display name is not a substitute for the login name or login email. A display name can change and may not identify the account in Jagex’s recovery system.
Submit an appeal when reset does not work
If the email was changed or is inaccessible, or another listed access problem prevents a reset, use Submit an account recovery appeal. Jagex says the appeal helps verify the account creator and asks for as much remembered ownership information as possible.
- Open the recovery appeal from the official support site.
- Enter the login name or login email, not merely the character’s current display name.
- Provide complete, consistent ownership details requested by the form. Older information can be useful when a current email or password is no longer available.
- Explain what changed, when you lost access and whether an unknown person may have linked another login.
- Monitor the email address supplied to the appeal. Jagex says an outcome email should arrive within 24 hours, although that is an expected response window rather than a promise that every case will be resolved in that time.
Do not submit invented details or a series of contradictory appeals. If the first result is unsuccessful, read the response and provide stronger, accurate ownership information through the route Jagex gives you.
Recovering an authenticator without confusing the account type
Authenticator loss can mean several things: a broken phone, a deleted authenticator app, a lost device, or a code rejected because the account uses a different method. The correct response depends on the account type and whether you saved backup codes.

Never ask another player to “test” a backup code. A code that works is not a harmless diagnostic token; it grants full access and can be used only once.
Can you get OSRS progress back after a rollback?
There is no general player-side restoration procedure established by the Jagex security and account-recovery guidance linked above. A password reset, recovery appeal, local game installation, screenshot or security product cannot write an earlier character state back to Jagex’s servers.
For a suspected rollback:
- Confirm that the missing progress affects more than your character. Compare the timing with clan members, friends or an official incident notice, without sharing account credentials.
- Check Jagex’s current official announcements and service-status communications for the specific incident.
- Write down the world, approximate login and logout times, activities completed, items or levels affected and when you first noticed the change.
- If the announcement provides a support route, use it and describe the event as a server rollback rather than an account compromise. If no policy is stated, ask official support whether that incident has a restoration process.
- Keep the account secured while waiting. Do not disable two-step authentication or hand over access because someone claims they can restore the lost progress.
Whether Jagex can restore a particular rollback is incident-specific. Do not assume that a successful account recovery also restores progress: it proves or restores access, not the server’s historical game state.

Choose the right response quickly

Maintenance checklist for an OSRS account
Review these controls after upgrading an account, changing phones or recovering from an incident:
- Account type is known, and the matching Jagex guidance is bookmarked.
- Jagex or legacy password is unique and stored securely.
- Sign-in email has a separate strong password and available two-step protection.
- Authenticator is active where supported.
- Backup codes are stored privately, away from the authenticator device, and have not been shared.
- Unknown Google, Steam or other linked logins have been removed.
- Active sessions have been reviewed after suspicious activity.
- Operating system, browser and trusted security tools are current.
- Unexpected login pages, “giveaway” links and requests for codes are treated as phishing.
- Incident notes contain dates and symptoms, but never passwords or backup codes.
These steps reduce the chance of losing access to a character. They do not guarantee immunity from phishing, malware, credential theft or a Jagex service incident, and they do not create a personal restore point for server-side progress.
