Protect a NEAR wallet by checking the site address and every wallet prompt before you approve it, limiting the permissions you grant, and knowing which on-chain permissions need separate revocation. Disconnecting a dApp does not, by itself, revoke a NEAR access key or an NFT approval. If your seed phrase or a full-access key may be exposed, treat the account as compromised and move remaining assets to a new account.
Know what you are approving
Several different things may be described loosely as “wallet access,” but they are not interchangeable. The right response depends on the permission involved.

The NEAR injected-wallet specification describes function-call access keys in the context of dApps requesting constrained signing permissions and calls for explicit user approval. It does not mean every connection creates such a key or that every request is safe. Check the actual key scope and transaction details. NFT approval methods are separately specified in NEP-178.

How to avoid phishing before signing
- Open the project through a known route. Use a bookmark you created from a verified source or a project’s independently verified channel. Check the full domain carefully, including lookalike characters, and be wary of sponsored search results.
- Keep your recovery phrase private. Never type a seed phrase into a dApp, website, support chat, or “verification” form. A normal dApp interaction should not require your recovery phrase.
- Read the full wallet prompt. Check which account is involved, the receiving account or contract, the method, any amount, and the permission being requested. Cancel a request you did not initiate or cannot explain.
- Grant only the access needed. If your wallet offers a restricted function-call key, check its allowed contract and methods, and review any gas allowance. Avoid granting full account authority to a dApp when a narrower permission will do.
- Stop if anything changes unexpectedly. A familiar site can still present a transaction you did not intend. Do not approve a prompt just because it appears while you are using a trusted dApp.
Wallets implement permissions differently, so exact labels and controls vary. The important distinction is the permission shown in the prompt—not simply whether the site is connected.

How to revoke a NEAR NFT approval
NEP-178 defines two relevant methods for NFT approvals: nft_revoke removes one approval for a token, while nft_revoke_all clears approvals for that token. Use an interface or workflow you have independently verified for the NFT contract, and confirm the resulting approval state on-chain. These are NFT-contract methods, not a universal NEAR allowance checker; EVM token-approval tools should not be assumed to cover NEAR.
- Identify the NFT contract and token whose approval you want to remove.
- Use the contract’s trusted wallet or contract interface to call
nft_revokefor a specific approved account, ornft_revoke_allto clear approvals for that token. - Review the transaction details in your wallet before signing. Reject it if the contract, method, token, or requested action differs from what you intended.
- After the transaction completes, inspect the token’s approval state using a trusted on-chain view or the relevant contract interface.
NEP-178 notes that revocation does not send a cross-contract call to previous approvers. Do not rely on an approver being notified; verify the contract state yourself.

What to do if a key or seed phrase may be compromised
Revoking one NFT approval does not fix an exposed seed phrase or full-access key. If either may have been disclosed, treat the account as compromised: use a clean device and a trusted workflow to create a fresh account, then move remaining assets there as soon as it is safe to do so. Do not enter the exposed phrase into another site or support conversation.
If only a suspicious access key is involved and the seed phrase is not exposed, use the wallet’s key-management controls or another independently verified method to remove that key. Confirm the change through a trusted on-chain view where possible. Removing a key and revoking an NFT approval address different permissions; one does not automatically undo the other.

What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do
A hardware wallet can keep private-key operations separate from a potentially compromised computer, reducing exposure of the key itself. It does not determine whether an NFT approval or transaction is malicious. If you misunderstand the prompt and confirm it on the device, a hardware wallet cannot make that decision for you.
The Near Wallet feature page lists Ledger Nano S/X support via the NEAR Ledger app. This is a wallet feature claim, not a protocol-wide guarantee; check that your chosen wallet currently supports the device and that the device is available in your region.
