When wildfire smoke makes the air unhealthy, reduce time and exertion outdoors, make an indoor room cleaner by limiting incoming smoke and filtering its air, and follow local health and evacuation instructions. If you must go outside, a properly fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to smoke particles—but it does not protect against gases and is no substitute for evacuation or medical advice.
This guidance is U.S.-centered and draws on EPA, AirNow, CDC, and NIOSH recommendations. Elsewhere, check your local air-quality and public-health authorities. Smoke conditions can change during the day, so revisit official updates rather than relying on a single reading.
What wildfire smoke can do to your health
Wildfire smoke is a mixture of fine particles and gases from burning plants, buildings, and other materials. It can travel far beyond the fire area. Exposure may cause coughing, trouble breathing, wheezing, asthma symptoms, stinging eyes, a scratchy throat, a runny nose, irritated sinuses, headache, tiredness, chest pain, or a fast heartbeat. People do not necessarily experience all of these symptoms, and this list is not a diagnostic tool. CDC explains how wildfire smoke affects the body.

Wildfire smoke can make anyone sick, but some people have a higher risk. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with heart or lung conditions should take particular care; these groups are not the only people who may be affected. CDC’s health-effects guidance and wildfire guidance for people with chronic conditions provide more detail.

Check air quality and follow local directions
Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and smoke guidance or your local or state air-quality and health agency. Reduce outdoor exercise when smoke is affecting the air; choose a lower-intensity activity or wait for better air if possible. The conditions and the right response can vary by location and person. Follow official evacuation and return-home instructions.
NIOSH gives specific advice to go outside only when conditions are in the Good or Moderate categories. Treat that as guidance from that source, not a universal threshold that overrides local alerts, individual health needs, or evacuation orders. See NIOSH’s wildfire-smoke recommendations.

Make an indoor room cleaner
Staying indoors can reduce exposure, but smoke may still enter the home. A clean-air room can help lower exposure while sheltering indoors; it should not be treated as guaranteed smoke-free. AirNow’s Be Smoke Ready guidance explains how to set one up.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Limit smoke entering. Close windows and doors. Choose a room that can be closed off from outside air.
- Filter the room or home air. Use a portable air cleaner sized for the room, and run it continuously at its highest fan speed to maximize filtration. Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners.
- Use central HVAC appropriately. If your system allows it, set it to recirculate indoor air. Use the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate, following the system manufacturer’s instructions.
- Avoid adding particles indoors. Do not smoke, burn candles or incense, use gas, wood, or propane fires, fry or broil food, or vacuum while smoke is affecting air quality.
Portable cleaners and HVAC filters need to be suitable for the room or system, respectively. For a central system, do not use a filter beyond what the manufacturer says it can accommodate. Cleaner air indoors is one exposure-reduction measure, not a guarantee that all smoke has been removed. CDC’s wildfire safety guidance also covers reducing smoke exposure at home.

Use a respirator if you cannot avoid going outside
A properly fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to smoke particles. It must cover your nose and chin and seal closely to your face; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check the seal each time you put it on. If it does not seal, try another model or size.
Cloth masks, surgical masks, bandanas, and tissues are not designed to filter very small smoke particles effectively or to provide the same seal. A filtering facepiece respirator does not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide. Do not use a respirator as a reason to stay outdoors during evacuation conditions or disregard health advice. NIOSH explains respirator use during wildfire smoke, and AirNow describes limits of face coverings.

Take extra care with chronic conditions and symptoms
If you have asthma or another chronic condition, follow your clinician’s advice and any written action plan. Keep your medicines available and pay attention to air-quality reports. People with chronic conditions can review CDC’s guidance on preparing for wildfire smoke.
