To protect your health information in a sexual health app, check its privacy notice before entering sensitive details, limit optional sharing and device permissions, and secure your account and phone. These steps reduce exposure; they cannot guarantee that an app will not share data or erase information it has already collected.

Before you install: find out what the app does with your data

Start with the privacy notice, available from the app listing or the developer’s website. Look for specific answers—not just general promises—about the information the app collects, why it collects it, who receives it, how long it is retained, and what controls you have to limit or delete it. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking what an app collects and how information is used or shared: FTC: Does your health app protect your sensitive info?

  • Check sharing partners. See whether information goes to advertisers, analytics providers, social platforms, or other services. Ask whether each kind of sharing is necessary for the feature you want.
  • Look for user controls. Find out whether you can turn off optional collection or sharing, disconnect other services, and request deletion.
  • Compare similar apps. For apps with similar functions, compare the information each collects, its sharing practices, available controls, permissions, retention terms, and how clearly it explains security. The FTC recommends comparing privacy protections; the available evidence does not establish a single most-private app.
  • Minimize what you provide. Consider whether you need to provide optional identifying details. Do not assume an app supports anonymous use; check its requirements.

A “HIPAA compliant” label is not a blanket guarantee. Ask which company operates the app and whether it is acting as a covered entity or business associate for the information at issue.

After installation: reduce what the app can access or share

Review the app’s settings and connections

Check the app’s privacy, sharing, and connected-service settings. Where choices are available, select the more protective options. Review connected health platforms, wearables, accounts, and data exports, since information can flow between the app and services you link to it.

Limit device permissions

Deny permissions that are not needed for a feature you use, and revisit them periodically. For example, location access may be unnecessary for some app functions. Apple and Android provide controls for location services, though menu names can change between operating-system versions; HHS’s guidance links to platform-specific controls: HHS reproductive-health guidance. Turning off location does not prevent an app from receiving information you enter directly or inferring information from other data.

Secure your account and device

  • Use a password you do not reuse on other accounts.
  • Enable multifactor authentication if the app offers it.
  • Use the device’s available screen-lock and security features.
  • Keep the app and your phone’s operating system current. The FTC advises that updates can include privacy and security fixes, and says, “One of the best ways to protect your information is to keep your app (and your phone’s operating system) up to date.”

These account and device steps are practical applications of FTC authentication guidance; available features vary by app and device. Updates help address risks but do not determine what an app’s provider is allowed to collect or share.

If you stop using the app: request deletion, then verify its scope

Use the app’s account or data controls to request deletion if available. Read the notice to learn what deletion covers, including any stated retention period or treatment of backups. If the distinction matters, ask the provider whether the request removes server-held records and linked data, and when.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstalling removes the app from your device; it is not proof that the provider deleted records held on its servers. FTC developer guidance recommends deleting data when there is no legitimate business need to retain it, but that guidance does not promise that every app immediately removes every copy when a user deletes an account.

What US privacy laws do—and do not—mean for a consumer app

HIPAA does not automatically cover every app that handles health information. It generally protects identifiable health information held by covered entities, such as health plans and most health care providers, and by business associates acting in that role. A direct-to-consumer app outside those relationships may not be covered, even if it stores sensitive sexual or reproductive-health information. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) explains HIPAA’s scope in its reproductive-health guidance.

That does not mean no federal protections apply. The FTC Act applies to most app developers. The FTC Health Breach Notification Rule may apply to certain personal-health-record entities and related providers. The FTC says its July 2024 amendments clarify the Rule’s reach to health apps and connected devices. Whether it applies depends on the organization and data flows; among other conditions, the Rule concerns qualifying personal health record services that can draw information from multiple sources and are managed primarily for an individual. The FTC’s Health Breach Notification Rule guidance and mobile health app interactive tool explain the distinctions.

State laws may add protections or obligations. Reproductive-health privacy rules have also changed: HHS reported that a June 18, 2025 court order vacated most of the 2024 HIPAA reproductive-health privacy rule. According to HHS’s page, specified notice-of-privacy-practices changes remained in effect, with a February 16, 2026 compliance date. Those HIPAA provisions concern regulated entities; they do not make a standalone consumer app HIPAA-covered. HHS’s page was reviewed June 27, 2025, and does not establish whether later litigation or administrative action changed that status. Do not treat this summary as legal advice or as confirmation of the rule’s status after that date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For HIPAA-regulated organizations, reproductive-health information may be used or disclosed without signed authorization only as permitted or required by the Privacy Rule. Some law-enforcement disclosures may be allowed under specified legal processes and conditions. That framework does not automatically govern a standalone consumer app.

Why privacy promises deserve a closer look

In 2021, the FTC issued an order following allegations that fertility app Flo Health shared sensitive information with marketing and analytics firms despite promises to keep it private. The case is a reason to compare stated sharing practices with available controls; it is not evidence that every app behaves the same way or proof of any particular app’s current practices. See the FTC’s Flo Health order announcement.

Privacy concerns are not hypothetical for users. At FTC PrivacyCon 2024, a transcript presenting a study reported that 40% of participants said they had not been informed about their period-tracking app’s privacy practices, and 60% said the overturn of Roe v. Wade had some impact on their privacy concerns. In the scenario described before Roe v. Wade was explicitly mentioned, 8% initially attributed concern to it. These are findings from a vignette-based study of 183 US participants—not population-wide estimates. The study is by Jiaxun Cao, Hiba Laabadli, Chase Mathis, Rebecca Stern, and Pardis Emami-Naeini, published for CHI 2024: CHI 2024 study; see also the FTC PrivacyCon 2024 event.

A quick checklist

  • Before signing up, read the privacy notice and check collection, sharing, retention, security, and deletion terms.
  • Compare alternatives with similar features; do not rely on a HIPAA label alone.
  • Provide only details needed for the features you use, and deny unnecessary permissions.
  • Review sharing settings and linked accounts, wearables, and health platforms.
  • Use a unique password, enable multifactor authentication if available, and lock your device.
  • Install app and operating-system updates.
  • When leaving, submit a data-deletion request and check what it covers; do not equate uninstalling with provider-side deletion.
