Convention Wi-Fi is a public hotspot, but that does not automatically make it unsafe: the Federal Trade Commission says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread. Protect your devices and accounts anyway: update them before you go, confirm the network and login steps with event staff, use HTTPS and strong account security, and treat a VPN as optional rather than a cure-all.
Is convention Wi-Fi safe to use?
The FTC’s February 2023 guidance says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is a general statement about public Wi-Fi, not a guarantee about a particular convention’s network, its operator, or every connection prompt you may see. Encryption helps protect data in transit, but it does not prove a website is genuine or protect you from phishing.
Use HTTPS websites and trusted apps, and be wary of unexpected sign-in pages. The FTC notes that scammers can use encrypted websites too, so a padlock or HTTPS address is not proof that a site is legitimate. FTC: Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know.
Before you leave for the convention
- Install updates on trusted internet. Update your console, handheld, laptop, phone, browser, apps, and security software before traveling. The FTC recommends keeping computer and smartphone software current.
- Secure important accounts. Use strong, distinct passwords for your email and gaming-platform accounts, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. Protecting email matters because it may be used to reset other accounts.
- Disable automatic joining of public Wi-Fi. Turn off automatic connection to open or public networks where your device offers that setting. The FTC specifically recommends disabling automatic connections to public Wi-Fi on smartphones. FTC: Cybersecurity for Small Business.
- Know your recovery options. Check that your account recovery email and phone number are current, and keep any backup codes somewhere separate from the device you carry.
At the venue: confirm the network before connecting
Get the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and sign-in instructions from event staff or official event materials. A familiar-looking network name is not, by itself, proof that an access point belongs to the venue. The network name and login process vary by event; do not assume a particular SSID or captive portal.

Do not enter a password after following an unsolicited text, email, QR code, pop-up, or direct message. If a login page is unexpected or asks for information that does not make sense for Wi-Fi access, stop and confirm the process with staff. Use mobile data instead while you check.
While you are connected
Use trusted sign-ins and avoid credential exposure
Use HTTPS sites and official apps, and check the address before entering credentials. Avoid saving passwords on a borrowed or shared computer; sign out when you finish. These habits reduce the risk of leaving an account accessible to the next person using the device.

Decide whether a VPN fits your situation
A VPN can create an encrypted tunnel so someone monitoring the local Wi-Fi connection sees encrypted traffic, including traffic to a website that does not use encryption itself. But the VPN provider handles traffic routed through its service, so you are shifting trust from the hotspot operator to the VPN operator—not becoming anonymous. A VPN also cannot make a fraudulent site trustworthy or replace updates, MFA, and careful sign-in behavior. Review the provider’s privacy practices before using it. A VPN is optional, and compatibility is not guaranteed for every convention login flow, console, or game service. If a device or service will not connect, use its supported connection options or mobile data rather than assuming the VPN is required.

Keep account authentication separate from network privacy
A physical FIDO-compatible security key is an optional MFA method for accounts and devices that support it. CISA identifies security keys as a preferred MFA method and notes their strong protection against phishing; check compatibility before choosing one. A security key protects account sign-in where supported. It does not encrypt general network traffic or secure the venue’s Wi-Fi. CISA: Four Cybersecurity Essentials for SLTTs.
If the connection or login page looks wrong
- Disconnect from the network. Do not continue through an unexpected prompt or sign-in page.
- Confirm the official process. Ask event staff or consult official event information for the correct network and connection steps.
- Use another connection if needed. Switch to mobile data while you verify the venue process.
- If you may have entered a password on a fake page, act from a trusted connection. Change that password, check whether it was reused elsewhere, and update any accounts that shared it.
- Review account security. Use the account’s official security settings to check MFA and active sessions, and end sessions you do not recognize.

The guidance here applies to convention attendees using public hotspots generally; it does not describe the configuration or security of any specific event network. The FTC public Wi-Fi safety article is dated February 2023. Its separate VPN guidance is from February 2018 and is used here for its stated points about traffic routing, provider access, and anonymity.
