For outdoor work, protect your camera and lens with a rain cover that fits the exact combination, keep a lens hood on as a secondary shield, minimize the time the camera mount is open during lens changes, and carry gear so hard objects cannot press against it. These steps reduce exposure; neither weather-resistant construction nor a rain cover makes every camera-and-lens combination waterproof or impact-proof.
How do I protect my camera and lens in rain or snow?
Use a purpose-built camera rain cover that the manufacturer lists as compatible with both your camera body and lens. Fit matters: check the supported lens length and diameter as well as the body, and confirm that you can operate the controls and viewfinder with the cover installed. A cover is added protection, not a waterproof guarantee.
Choose a cover for your exact setup
Sony describes its LCR-ESB small rain cover for rain and snow, and provides a separate compatibility resource on its product page. Sony describes the LCR-ESW for Alpha interchangeable-lens cameras with a central viewfinder and mid-size lenses; check the full compatibility information for your particular body and lens. Sony cautions that the cover is not guaranteed to completely prevent moisture ingress in severe blizzards.

Canon lists the ERC-R5S small and ERC-R5L large as water-repellent covers for compatible EOS R cameras and lenses. Its Canon UAE listing names the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. That is a regional listing, so its availability does not establish stock or compatibility in every market; check the current local listing and compatibility details for your equipment.

Before choosing among covers, compare the exact camera and lens compatibility, supported lens dimensions, control and viewfinder access, attachment method, packed size, and the weather conditions the maker describes. Product availability and compatibility details can change. The manufacturer pages describe their products but do not provide comparable independent protection tests, so they do not support ranking one cover as more protective overall.
Use a hood and a backup plan
A lens hood can help keep falling drops or snowflakes from landing directly on the front element. Treat it as a supplementary shield, not a substitute for a cover. For long shoots in rain or snow, Nikon recommends a commercially available rain cover and carrying a small towel to dry gear. Nikon also describes a plastic bag or shower cap secured with a rubber band as an emergency improvisation when a commercial cover is unavailable. It is not a reliable seal or a rated protection system; keep the lens opening clear and do not treat the improvised cover as waterproof.

How can I keep dust out when changing lenses?
Dust, dirt, or moisture can reach the sensor or mirror during a lens change. Sony notes that careful technique reduces the risk but cannot eliminate it. Prepare the replacement lens first and make the change in a clean, sheltered place rather than near a fan, vent, or open window.
- Turn the camera off before changing lenses.
- Choose a clean place away from fans, vents, or windows.
- Have the incoming lens ready before removing the lens on the camera.
- Point the camera opening downward while removing the old lens and attaching the new one.
- Fit compatible body and rear lens caps if the openings or removed lens will remain unused for a prolonged period.
If you see loose dust on the outside of a lens, use a blower or blower brush gently. These steps address prevention and loose external dust; they are not instructions to open the camera or attempt internal repairs. See Sony’s lens-change and sensor-dust guidance for its full precautions.

How should I carry gear to reduce impact damage?
Avoid dropping the camera or subjecting it to strong impacts. In a bag, arrange the camera and lenses so hard objects cannot press against them; a well-fitted padded camera bag is a practical way to separate gear from other items. This is general handling advice, not a promise that a particular bag will prevent damage: the reviewed manufacturer guidance does not quantify bag protection or publish drop-test results for specific cases. Canon’s compact-camera handling guidance warns against drops and strong impacts; follow the manual for your own equipment.
How do I clean dust or droplets from the outside?
For loose lens dust, use a blower or blower brush rather than rubbing particles across the surface. Canon’s compact-camera care guidance advises wiping droplets or dirt with a dry, soft cloth or eyeglass wiper without force. Because that advice is from a compact-camera guide, check your own camera and lens manuals for model-specific cleaning instructions.

What should I do when bringing cold gear into a warm place?
Rapid temperature changes can lead to condensation. Canon’s compact-camera guide advises placing the camera in an airtight resealable bag while it adjusts during a quick move from cold to warm. If condensation forms, stop using the camera and wait for the moisture to evaporate. This is the cited manufacturer’s advice for compact-camera models, not a universal guarantee for every camera; follow your equipment’s manual.
