To protect a router, modem, or computer from both a sudden outage and a power spike when service returns, connect it to a properly sized UPS (uninterruptible power supply) with surge protection. For devices that do not need battery backup, use a suitable surge protective device (SPD). For broader coverage that may include hardwired appliances, ask a qualified electrician about a whole-home SPD.

A surge protector alone will not keep equipment running during an outage. A UPS can supply temporary battery power to the devices connected to its battery-backed outlets, as well as provide surge protection. Follow the instructions for your exact UPS model when connecting it.

Why power returning after an outage can be a risk

When electricity is restored, a voltage surge can damage electronics and appliances. The Electrical Safety Foundation International warns that “When power returns, a surge can damage TVs, appliances, and even heating and AC systems.” ESFI’s power outage guidance recommends surge protection as part of recovery planning.

Surge protection and backup power address different problems. A surge protective device helps protect compatible equipment from voltage spikes; it does not provide power during an outage. A UPS combines surge protection with battery power for the equipment connected to its battery-backed outlets. Neither arrangement should be treated as a guarantee against every electrical fault or failure.

Choose the right kind of protection

Option What it does What to consider
UPS / battery backup Provides temporary power to selected devices during an outage and can also provide surge protection. Size it for the connected load and desired runtime. Runtime decreases as more equipment is connected. Check outlet types and the manufacturer’s connection instructions.
Plug-in surge protective device Helps protect compatible plug-in electronics from voltage spikes. Does not provide outage runtime. Use it only as directed for compatible equipment.
Whole-home SPD Can provide broader surge protection at the electrical service or distribution system, potentially covering more circuits and appliances. A qualified electrician should assess the installation and locally applicable requirements. It does not prevent every possible electrical problem.
Home energy storage Can provide backup power to selected home loads, depending on the system design. This is a larger system than a small electronics UPS; capacity, transfer equipment, installation, and cost depend on the design.

Size a UPS for the equipment you need to keep running

Start with the devices that need continuity or time for a safe shutdown: typically the modem, router, and computer. Check their power requirements and the UPS’s watt and VA output ratings. Schneider Electric advises adding the connected devices’ wattage, choosing a UPS with adequate VA capacity, and leaving room for peaks. Its UPS buying guide also explains that adding load reduces battery runtime.

  • Connect only essential equipment to battery-backed outlets. Some UPS units have separate surge-only outlets that do not supply battery power during an outage; check the labels and manual.
  • Choose capacity based on the combined load and the runtime you need. A category name or VA rating alone does not establish how long a particular setup will run; consult the model’s runtime information for your actual load.
  • Consider battery replacement availability and outlet configuration when comparing models.

Understand the UPS type without overbuying

UPS designs differ in how they respond to power variations. ENERGY STAR classifies them by voltage and frequency dependence, while noting the familiar standby, line-interactive, and online descriptions. The classification is useful context, not a rule that every home needs the most sophisticated design.

ENERGY STAR classification Common description Power behavior
VFD (voltage and frequency dependent) Standby or offline Provides outage backup but does not correct voltage fluctuations.
VI (voltage independent) Line-interactive Adds corrective voltage functions.
VFI (voltage and frequency independent) Online or double conversion Uses continuous conversion to isolate connected loads from voltage and frequency variation.

These distinctions are described in ENERGY STAR’s UPS criteria. Match the design to the equipment and power conditions you need to address, and rely on the exact unit’s specifications rather than assuming every model in a category performs identically.

Connect the equipment and prepare before an outage

  1. Identify critical devices. Decide which devices need temporary power or a controlled shutdown, and check their power draw.
  2. Match the UPS to the load. Compare the combined wattage with the UPS’s watt and VA ratings, then use model-specific runtime information to judge whether it meets your needs.
  3. Use the right outlets. Put equipment that needs battery power in battery-backed outlets; use surge-only outlets only for devices that do not need backup runtime.
  4. Follow the model’s connection instructions. Confirm whether the UPS must connect directly to a wall receptacle and whether it permits downstream power strips or other distribution accessories. Do not assume that adding a surge strip is acceptable.
  5. Protect other equipment separately. Use an appropriate plug-in SPD for compatible electronics that do not need battery runtime. For broader circuit and appliance coverage, consult a qualified electrician about a whole-home SPD.

For APC Back-UPS and Smart-UPS families, Schneider Electric Canada advises plugging the UPS directly into a wall receptacle and discourages surge protectors, power strips, or extension cords at the input or output. The guidance cites possible load-reporting, overload, and grounding issues. It applies to those product families; check the instructions for your own UPS. See Schneider Electric Canada’s APC guidance.

What to do during and after an outage

  • If a UPS is powering your router, modem, or computer, treat its battery as temporary power. Save work and shut down safely rather than waiting for the battery to run out.
  • After service returns, remember that battery backup and surge protection are separate functions. A UPS protects and powers only the equipment connected as directed; a plug-in SPD does not keep devices running.
  • If you see signs of electrical damage, experience persistent abnormal power, or suspect a wiring fault, stop using affected equipment and contact a qualified professional or your utility as appropriate. Appliance and installation reset steps vary, so do not apply a universal reset procedure.

When whole-home surge protection makes sense

A plug-in protector covers only compatible equipment connected to it. A whole-home SPD is a separate installation option for broader protection at the electrical service or distribution system, including circuits that may serve appliances not plugged into an outlet strip. Ask a qualified electrician to assess the home and confirm requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction. ESFI’s page discusses the 2020 National Electrical Code; local adoption and requirements should be confirmed rather than assumed from that edition.
