Keep insecticides off milkweed and flowering pollinator habitat, and ask plant sellers whether their stock has been treated. For common garden pests such as aphids, inspect milkweed for monarch eggs and caterpillars first; try hand removal or a rinse of water instead of spraying the garden.
Keep pesticides off milkweed and nearby habitat
Insecticides can harm monarch eggs and caterpillars when sprayed directly or when residues remain on milkweed leaves. Drift can also reach plants beyond the area being treated. Avoid applying insecticides to milkweed or flowering plants used by pollinators, including when you are treating a problem elsewhere in the garden. Ask about nursery plants before buying
Some insecticides, including neonicotinoids, are systemic: they can be taken up into plant tissues and persist there. Ask the nursery or grower whether a plant has been treated and which pesticides were used. A “pollinator plant” label alone does not establish that the plant is pesticide-free.
Reduce drift exposure
Monarch Joint Venture says Xerces Society guidance recommends a 125-foot pesticide-free buffer next to monarch or pollinator habitat to help reduce drift risk. Handle aphids without harming monarchs
Aphids on milkweed are not, by themselves, a reason to spray. Moderate pest presence can be tolerated, and broad insecticide use can expose monarchs and other beneficial insects across the habitat.
- Inspect the plant first. Look closely for monarch eggs and caterpillars before touching or rinsing milkweed.
- Remove aphids by hand. If there are only a few, gently remove them without disturbing eggs or larvae.
- Rinse with water if needed. A careful rinse can dislodge aphids without applying a pesticide across the garden.
Monarch Joint Venture’s pesticide guidance also discusses soapy sprays. Such a spray must contact aphids directly, can affect beneficial insects it reaches, and should be rinsed off as instructed by that guidance. It is not a risk-free substitute for broad spraying.

Let a diverse garden function
Not every insect on milkweed is a threat that needs to be removed. Moderate aphid and milkweed bug presence can be tolerated, while natural enemies are part of a functioning habitat. Predation is normal; a caterpillar that is no longer visible may have been eaten, but it may also have left milkweed to pupate elsewhere. Do not kill every suspected predator in response to a missing caterpillar. Monarch Joint Venture’s garden guidance recommends restraint rather than trying to eliminate every garden pest.

What to know about mosquito control
Mosquito control has a public-health role, but some adulticide sprays can affect monarchs. The level of risk depends on the product, application method, timing, and exposure. Monarch Joint Venture’s mosquito-control guidance describes water-applied larvicides as less harmful to Lepidoptera than adulticide sprays; that distinction does not make every product or application harmless.

If you see mosquito spraying near monarch habitat, ask the local mosquito-control program which product and method it uses and when applications occur. Timing information can help you understand potential exposure, but it does not ensure that drift or contact will be avoided.
