Protecting a lithium-ion battery mostly comes down to using the right charger, following the device maker’s instructions, keeping the battery away from temperature extremes, and stopping use if it changes shape or behaves unusually. Never put these batteries in household trash or ordinary recycling. If one catches fire, get out, close the door if safe, and call emergency services from outside.
Charge the battery with the right equipment
Use the charger supplied with the device, or a replacement specifically recommended by its manufacturer. A matching plug does not mean a charger is compatible: compare the exact device requirements and the manufacturer’s recommendation rather than relying on connector shape or wattage alone. Buy from a reputable seller and check for product recalls.
For electronic devices, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises connecting the charger directly to a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Follow the device’s charging instructions, and do not charge a battery that is damaged or showing warning signs.
Choose a replacement charger carefully
- Confirm that it is specified for your exact device or battery model.
- Check that the device manufacturer recommends it and that any applicable certification or listing is documented.
- Do not assume that one certification mark makes a charger suitable for every device; standards apply to particular product categories.
- Check official recall information before using a replacement or multi-slot charger.
For example, on October 10, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to stop using specified four- and six-slot Garberiel lithium-ion chargers because of overheating and arcing hazards. The CPSC reported six incidents involving those named chargers since 2019, including a fatal fire. That warning concerns the specified products, not all multi-slot chargers.

Store and charge batteries at safe temperatures
Follow the device maker’s storage and charging directions. The USFA recommends storing batteries at room temperature when possible and says not to charge them below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C). Keep batteries away from direct sunlight, heaters and other heat sources, and flammable materials.
For e-bike and scooter batteries, follow any stricter local requirements. NYC guidance calls for room-temperature storage away from sunlight, heat, flammable materials, and confined spaces. It also advises charging directly from a wall outlet and avoiding unattended or overnight charging. These are NYC recommendations, not a statement of identical rules everywhere.

- Tenergy large lipo zipper bag for charging and storing LiPO batteries, battery packs.
- Fire retardant lipo battery bag - Made with triple-layered flame retardant protection material.
- Large size - Measures up to 8.5 x 6.5 x 5.7inches and can store up to 25 lipo battery packs when not used.
- Charging hole with velcro seal design reduces airflow and oxygen.
- Made with material that meets the rigorous international standards for flammability set by UL 94.
Where possible, charge or store a large micromobility battery outside, as FDNY guidance recommends, and never position it where it could block an exit. In a July 2026 release about a fatal Queens apartment fire, FDNY said fire marshals attributed the fire to a battery charging in a kitchen. That is a specific local incident, not a measure of risk for every battery or household.

Keep charging from creating an exit hazard
Do not leave a charging device unattended or charging overnight where local authorities or the device maker advise against it. Choose a location where a battery fire would not block a bedroom door, entrance, hallway, or other route out. NYC guidance is particularly specific about keeping micromobility devices away from bedrooms and exits; check the rules that apply where you live.

- 🔥【Why do you need lipo battery bag】- Do you know the potential dangers of lipo batteries? Once the battery is shorted, it will instantly generate high temperature and spontaneously ignite, which brings danger to you and your family. We designed this bag to minimize that risk, even though it can't withstand the heat and flames naturally generated by batteries for long time. But it will at least give you time to react to a spontaneous battery combustion.
- 🔥【Risk reduction】- Fireproof doesn't mean it can be endlessly exposed to fire and resist spontaneous battery combustion, we designed this product originally to reduce the risk of fire and stop the spread of fire, it is recommended that our products are stored in an open area with no flammable materials around to ensure maximum safety.
- 🔥【Three-proof battery bag】- FLASLD battery bag is fireproof - temperature resistance up to 1000℉, explosionproof - three-layer composite material is firm and reliable, waterproof - Silicone coating is waterproof and protects the battery.
- 🔥【Firefighter design】- The unique reflective strip design of the FLASLD battery bag can make it easier for you to find it in the dark night. In addition to storing batteries, it can also be used to store valuables, mobile phones, cash and various certificates and documents.
- 🔥【Safeguard liPo battery】- FLASLD Fireproof LiPo Battery bag is a convenient way of safe guarding your Lipo batteries during charging, transit, and storage. The bag is intended to reduce the chances of damage in the event of a lipo fire,Purchasing FLASLD battery bag does not mean it is absolutely safe, we do not want to mislead our customers and this statement means that we cannot cover the consequences of spontaneous battery combustion for you.
Recognize when a battery may be dangerous
Stop using a battery if you notice any of these warning signs:
- Unusual odor or discoloration
- Excessive heat
- Swelling or another change in shape
- Leaking
- Unusual noises
Do not open, modify, or try to repair a battery pack yourself. The USFA advises using a certified repair facility. If a suspect battery can be moved away from combustible materials without putting you at risk, do so; otherwise, keep your distance and contact the manufacturer or local waste authority for handling instructions.

Dispose of batteries through an approved local program
Never put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or ordinary curbside recycling. Find an approved battery collection point or special-waste program, and follow that program’s instructions. Accepted drop-off options vary by location.
Ask the local collection program how to handle a damaged battery before transporting it. The USFA handout advises taping battery ends and terminals to prevent accidental discharge and fire; apply that advice only when it is appropriate for the battery and consistent with local collection instructions. Damaged batteries may require special handling.

Get out if a lithium-ion battery catches fire
- Evacuate immediately. Do not try to put out the fire or retrieve belongings.
- Close the door behind you if you can do so without delaying your escape.
- Once outside, call 911 or your local emergency number.
USFA guidance notes that lithium-ion battery fires can pose reignition challenges for responders. That does not mean every consumer battery fire will reignite; it is a reason to leave response to emergency personnel.
Use product standards and recall information as checks—not guarantees
The CPSC lists voluntary standards including UL 1642 for lithium batteries and UL 62133 for portable secondary cells and batteries. Standards are specific to product categories: a certification mark by itself does not show that a battery or charger is appropriate for your particular device. Use the maker’s specifications, purchase through reputable sellers, and check official recall notices.
For context on local risk, FDNY reported 40 structural fires attributed to lithium-ion batteries in New York City during January through March 2025, compared with 26 during the same months in 2024—a 53% increase. This is a time-bounded NYC figure, not a nationwide rate. On April 2, 2025, FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said, “A malfunctioning or uncertified lithium-ion battery can explode at any moment, charging or not, and residents need to take the necessary precautions to stay safe.” That is the commissioner’s safety warning, not a quantified probability for an individual battery.
