For day-to-day protection, put each Secret Lair card in a correctly sized standard-size card sleeve, handle it carefully, and keep it in a stable indoor location away from moisture, heat, and sudden environmental changes. The best setup depends on whether you play the card, store it in a collection, or display it.
Why sleeves and stable storage matter
Wizards of the Coast says Magic cards have a coating that helps protect their printed surfaces from moisture, scuffing, wear, and finger oils. Wizards describes that coating as the first line of defense, but a sleeve adds a practical barrier during handling and storage. See Wizards’ explanation of Magic card coatings.
The same article says Magic uses proprietary laminated playing-card paperboard that can be sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. That supports keeping cards in a steady indoor setting, not targeting a particular temperature or humidity number: Wizards does not give Secret Lair-specific storage targets.
Choose protection for how you use the card
For cards played in a deck
Use standard-size card sleeves made for trading cards and check that the card fits without bending or forcing it into the sleeve. A properly fitting sleeve helps limit direct contact with hands and reduces routine surface wear from handling. Replace a sleeve if it splits, becomes badly worn, or no longer holds the card securely.

For collection storage
A binder or card storage box can help organize cards that are not played often. If using a binder, confirm that its pockets accommodate the card in its sleeve; a tight pocket can make insertion or removal awkward. Store the binder or box indoors, away from leaks and places with large environmental swings.
For display
Use a sleeve as the card’s first removable layer of protection, then choose a display holder that fits the sleeved card without pressure. Keep the display out of direct environmental hazards such as damp areas or heat sources. No storage or display method guarantees that a card will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Keep Secret Lair cards in a suitable place
Choose a location with reasonably stable indoor conditions and low risk of water exposure. Avoid attics and basements when possible: the Library of Congress advises against them for collection storage because environmental control is often poor and leaks or floods are more likely. It also warns that putting a plastic container in a high-humidity area can increase mold risk. - Keep cards away from known leaks, damp walls, and places where water could collect.
- Avoid leaving a collection in an attic, basement, vehicle, or other location prone to heat, cold, or humidity changes.
- Do not treat a sealed plastic container as a solution to damp conditions; the surrounding environment still matters.
Handle cards without adding avoidable risk
Hold cards by their edges when practical, and avoid placing them on wet, dirty, or abrasive surfaces. Do not clean a card with liquids or chemicals, and do not try to flatten a foil with heat or pressure. If a card is already damaged, avoid experimenting on it; unsupported repair attempts can add further damage.

What to do if a card is defective when opened
If a Secret Lair card appears defective straight from a newly opened product, keep the original sealed-product packaging and the card. Wizards’ current replacement policy says an exact-card replacement may be possible through its process when the packaging and damaged card are returned. It does not cover used aftermarket purchases and does not guarantee a perfect or mint replacement. Review the current Secret Lair product replacement policy before submitting a request, since terms can change.

No special storage method is established for Secret Lair cards as a category. Use the same practical care as for other Magic cards: a correctly sized sleeve, careful handling, and a stable indoor place. Wizards says most Secret Lair drops are limited print run, while some are print on demand; that does not establish the scarcity or market value of any individual card. See the Secret Lair FAQ.

Ultra PRO has documented a Secret Lair-themed Magic sleeve product made from what the manufacturer calls archival-safe polypropylene and sized for standard trading cards. Its Holiday 2021 listing is unavailable, so it is an example of the sleeve category, not a claim about current stock or a guarantee of permanent preservation: Ultra PRO’s product listing.
