A VPN can protect some iPhone or iPad network connections by routing them through a VPN provider, but it is not a complete device-security switch. It can also move trust: the provider may be able to see, intercept, or modify online activity. Choose the right option for your goal—work or school access, consumer VPN routing, or Safari privacy—and do not assume every connection is covered.
Choose the right kind of protection
Work or school access
Use the VPN app or configuration approved by your organization. IT may set up VPN On Demand, per-app VPN, or Always On VPN depending on the device and management policy. Managed VPN is distinct from installing a consumer VPN app: Always On VPN is available for supervised iOS devices enrolled through management, and an organization may route all IP traffic through its network for monitoring or filtering. Follow your IT administrator’s instructions. Apple’s VPN security guide describes these managed options.
Consumer VPN routing
A consumer VPN may be useful if you have a specific need to route eligible connections through a provider or present a different IP address to destination services. It does not make you anonymous, protect every connection, or automatically secure accounts and apps. Consider whether the benefit is worth trusting another company with visibility into traffic it handles.
Safari privacy
If your goal is privacy for Safari browsing, iCloud Private Relay is a narrower alternative included with iCloud+. Apple says it uses two separate relays and protects Safari browsing, DNS queries, and unencrypted traffic. It is not a commercial VPN that routes all iPhone traffic. Understand what a VPN does—and does not—cover
When an eligible connection goes through a VPN, the VPN provides an encrypted route between the device and the VPN provider. The provider then controls how that traffic is routed onward and whether it is encrypted beyond that point. A VPN can obscure the device’s IP address from destination services, but it does not make the provider unable to see activity. Apple advises users to review a VPN provider’s privacy practices before installing its configuration. Apple’s VPNs & Privacy guidance explains this trust relationship.
An active VPN does not necessarily carry every connection. Apple notes that app developers can specify connection requirements that exclude app traffic from active VPN configurations. Some system and local-network traffic may also remain outside the tunnel. Provider settings can override some app bypasses, but do not assume that this means every packet or system function is tunneled.

Private Relay and a VPN have overlapping routing roles: when a VPN configuration is active, it determines routing for internet connections that otherwise would be protected by Private Relay. Decide which service fits the traffic and privacy goal you care about, rather than treating both as protections that simply stack. Apple documents Private Relay’s protected traffic; CISA describes its benefits as limited to Safari in its Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance.

Set up a VPN on an iPhone or iPad
The exact labels can vary by iOS version, VPN app, and management policy. Use the provider’s or organization’s current setup instructions rather than entering server details from an unrelated guide.

- Choose the source of the configuration. For a provider VPN, download its app or configuration through the App Store. For work or school, obtain the approved app or profile from IT.
- For manual setup, open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN > Add VPN Configuration. Enter only the settings supplied by your provider or IT administrator. Apple lists this manual configuration path.
- Review and approve the configuration. Check which provider or organization will handle the connection, then follow the on-screen prompts and any provider-specific instructions.
- Connect and verify the app or profile status. Confirm that the intended VPN is active before using the traffic or resource for which you set it up. An active status does not prove that every app or system connection is routed through it.
Apple documents IKEv2/IPsec and app-based SSL VPN among supported approaches. Managed per-app VPN and Always On VPN require the applicable organizational deployment; a basic consumer app does not grant a user managed Always On behavior. See Apple’s VPN security guide for deployment details.
Evaluate a consumer VPN before installing it
Compare providers against the job you need done, not just feature lists or broad privacy promises.

- Trust and data handling: Read the privacy policy and find out what connection and account data is retained, for how long, and for what purposes. Look for independent evidence supporting claims; no provider-specific audit is established here.
- Traffic coverage: Check what the iOS app routes, what it excludes, and what happens when the network changes or the VPN disconnects. Do not infer complete device coverage from an App Store listing.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your current iOS version and the protocol or client your provider requires. Consider interaction with Private Relay and other network tools.
- Use case: Separate consumer privacy or routing needs from organization-managed access, where IT policy and administrator controls govern the setup.
- Commercial terms: Check current pricing, renewal terms, and cancellation conditions directly with the provider before subscribing.
Pair VPN use with other iPhone protections
A VPN does not stop phishing, secure a compromised account, or make an unencrypted service end-to-end encrypted. CISA’s recommendations below address highly targeted individuals; CISA distinguishes those personal VPN considerations from VPN access required by an organization.
- Keep iOS and apps updated.
- Review app permissions, especially for sensitive data and device features.
- Use end-to-end encrypted communications when the content needs that protection.
- Use phishing-resistant FIDO authentication for accounts where feasible.
In its guidance for highly targeted individuals, CISA warns that personal VPNs can shift residual risks from an internet service provider to the VPN provider and may increase the attack surface. Its caution is not a blanket prohibition on VPNs required for organizational access. Read CISA’s Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance.
