In SwifDoo PDF’s documented desktop-style interface, open the file and choose Protect > Encryption. Use Open Password to require a password before someone can view the PDF; use Owner Password and Permissions to restrict selected actions after it opens. You can enable both when you need both controls.
Choose the protection that matches your goal
| What you want | SwifDoo setting | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Require a password to view the PDF | Open Password | Prompts for a password to open the file. |
| Allow opening, but restrict selected actions | Owner Password and Permissions | Sets restrictions such as printing, copying, editing, or annotating. These restrictions are not an open-password prompt. |
| Require a password to view and restrict actions | Open Password plus Owner Password and Permissions | Combines the two controls. |
Adobe says a permissions password is not required just to open a PDF in Acrobat, Acrobat Reader, or other conforming readers. Permission settings depend on the reader following them; they are not a guarantee that content cannot be copied or printed by every method. The Adobe PDF reference explains: “Despite the specification of document permissions in a PDF file, PDF cannot enforce the restrictions specified.” (Adobe PDF reference.)
Require a password to open the PDF
- Open the PDF in SwifDoo PDF.
- Select Protect > Encryption.
- Check Open Password, enter the password, and confirm with OK.
- Before saving, decide whether to keep the original. SwifDoo says the protected PDF replaces the original by default. To save a separate copy, turn off Replace Existing Files and choose a new location.
Restrict printing, copying, editing, or annotating
- Open the PDF and select Protect > Encryption.
- Select Owner Password and enter a password.
- Under Permissions, choose the actions to restrict.
- Click OK. As with an open-password setting, check the save behavior and choose a separate destination if you need to preserve the original.
SwifDoo documents permissions for actions including editing, printing, copying, and annotating. A permission setting controls how a conforming PDF reader handles those actions; it should not be treated as an absolute technical barrier to extracting the document’s content. If recipients must not be able to access the content at all, an open password is a separate control. For highly sensitive material, use a sharing process designed to control document access rather than relying on permission flags alone.

Save the password and keep an original copy
Store the passwords somewhere secure and retain an unprotected original if you may need to change the settings later. SwifDoo’s documented removal steps require the correct password for the protection being removed. Do not remove restrictions from a document unless you are authorized to do so.

Platform and interface notes
SwifDoo lists support for Windows, iOS, and Android on its product page. The steps above follow the desktop-style labels in its help guide; the available controls and labels may differ by platform or version, so check your installed app if you do not see the same path.
SwifDoo’s cited materials do not establish the encryption algorithm used for this feature. Do not infer SwifDoo’s implementation from Adobe PDF Services documentation, which describes Adobe’s own service.
