Protecting a Grok email address involves two different jobs: keeping the address used to sign in and recover your Grok account under your control, and filtering unwanted messages that arrive in that address’s inbox. Change the Grok sign-in address through xAI’s account portal at accounts.x.ai. Handle spam, mailing lists, blocked senders, and phishing in Gmail or whichever provider hosts the mailbox; Grok and X privacy settings do not replace those mail controls.
Start by identifying which problem you have
The right fix depends on what is happening. An address can remain perfectly valid for Grok while receiving marketing mail, or it can be inaccessible even though the Grok account still works. Treat these as separate cases.

Do not try to solve an inbox problem by changing Grok’s privacy settings, and do not change a sign-in address solely because one sender is filling your mailbox. Mail filtering is usually faster and preserves a recovery address you still control.

Protect the address used to sign in to Grok
Keep a reachable recovery address
Your Grok sign-in email is more than a username. It may be needed for account notices, access recovery, and proving ownership if support has to investigate a problem. Keep control of the mailbox, make sure you can receive messages there, and avoid using an address that will expire when a school, employer, ISP, or temporary service account ends.

A separate, persistent address can be useful if you want service-related mail isolated from your main correspondence. It is optional, not a guarantee against spam. The available account guidance does not establish that any particular alias or forwarding service is accepted by xAI, so verify the address in the current account flow before relying on it.
Change or add the sign-in email
xAI’s account FAQ gives the direct instruction: update or add your sign-in email at accounts.x.ai. The labels and layout can change, so use the current portal rather than copying an old screenshot or menu path.
- Open
accounts.x.aiand sign in using a method that still works. - Open the account or profile area and locate the current sign-in-email setting.
- Choose the option to update or add an email address.
- Enter a personal address that you control and can access for verification or future recovery.
- Complete any verification step shown by xAI, then confirm that the replacement address is listed before removing access to the old one.
- Sign out and test the replacement sign-in method while you still have access to the existing session.
The important check is not simply whether a new address was typed into a form. Confirm that you can receive account messages at that address and that it remains available long term. Save the new address in your password manager or other secure record, and check that the provider’s own recovery phone number or secondary email is still current. A recovery address that you cannot access is not useful during a lockout.

xAI’s FAQ describes signing in with a new personal email, Google, or X account and linking it through the account flow. Use one of those supported paths shown in the portal, rather than creating a disposable mailbox that you may lose later. If the old mailbox can be recovered through its provider, recover it first; retaining the original address can simplify verification and support.
Do not assume that forwarding alone transfers account ownership. A forwarding address may receive messages while the underlying mailbox is closed, filtered, or controlled by somebody else. Check where the replacement address is actually hosted, who can reset it, and how you would regain access if you lose a password or device.
Subscriptions purchased through Apple
For a subscription purchased through Apple, xAI says the email is managed through Apple. In that situation, changing a Grok account setting alone may not change the address associated with the Apple purchase. Check the Apple account and subscription identity used for the transaction, and follow the current Apple or xAI instructions displayed for that purchase.
If someone changed the email
An unexpected email change is an account-security incident, not ordinary spam. Contact xAI support promptly and provide the user ID and details that demonstrate ownership, as requested in xAI’s FAQ. Do not wait for a suspicious message to resolve itself, and do not send passwords or authentication codes in response to an unsolicited email.

When contacting support, describe when you last had access, which sign-in method you normally use, and what changed. Use an official xAI support route that you enter manually or reach from the account portal. Avoid “recovery” links supplied in unsolicited messages, even if they use Grok branding.
Control unwanted messages in your mailbox
The mail provider—not Grok’s privacy controls—decides what reaches the inbox. Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and workplace mail systems use different labels and menus, but the principles are the same: classify genuine spam, block persistent senders, unsubscribe from recognized lists, and report credential or personal-information requests as phishing.
Understand what each mail control does

If several messages arrive from the same campaign, report representative examples rather than replying to ask the sender to stop. Replying can confirm that your address is active. Keep one legitimate order, billing, or account notice if you need it for records, but remove unrelated promotional mail with the provider’s controls.
Gmail: report a message as spam
- Open Gmail and select the unwanted message.
- Choose Report spam from the toolbar or message menu.
- Gmail moves the message to the Spam folder and uses the report to improve filtering.
Google says that reporting or moving a message to Spam sends a copy to Google, which it may analyze to help protect users. That detail matters if you are deciding whether to report a message or merely delete it. Reporting gives Gmail a signal; deleting only removes the copy from your mailbox. If a legitimate Grok notice is misclassified, open the Spam folder and use Gmail’s not-spam control so future filtering has a correcting signal.

- Open a message from the sender.
- Open the three-dot More menu next to the reply controls.
- Select Block followed by the sender confirmation.
Google’s Gmail Help states: “After you block the sender, all future emails from them go to Spam.” Blocking is appropriate when one sender repeatedly contacts you. It is not a substitute for reporting a message that is clearly malicious, and it does not stop other addresses used by the same organization. Review your blocked-senders list periodically if you manage mail from multiple devices or clients.
Gmail: unsubscribe from a legitimate list
Use Unsubscribe when you recognize the organization, previously signed up, and simply no longer want its updates. Gmail may show an unsubscribe link near the sender’s address or inside the message. Follow that control and allow the list’s processing time. Do not click an unsubscribe link in a message that looks deceptive or asks for credentials; use Report phishing instead.
Some lists send a confirmation page after you unsubscribe. Visit it only when you initiated the action through a trusted message and the destination matches the organization you expect. If a list continues after a reasonable processing period, report those messages as spam instead of repeatedly responding.

Gmail: report phishing
Phishing messages imitate a service, employer, bank, or colleague and try to obtain a password, payment detail, verification code, or other personal information. Do not follow links, open unexpected attachments, reply, or provide information merely because the message uses Grok’s name or logo. Verify the request independently through a known website or contact method.

- Use Gmail’s three-dot menu and choose Report phishing.
- Delete the message after reporting it, then review account activity if you entered information before recognizing the fraud.
Google specifically advises reporting suspicious requests for personal information as phishing. A message can be unwanted and still be legitimate marketing; reserve the phishing category for deception or attempted information theft. If you entered a password, change it at the official site and change it anywhere else you reused it. If you provided a verification code, contact the affected service promptly.
Other email providers
If your Grok address is hosted by another provider, use that provider’s current junk or spam controls. The names, locations, and effects of buttons can differ, especially for Outlook, Apple Mail, university accounts, and employer-managed systems. Do not assume that a Gmail instruction or a personal account’s block list applies to a workplace mailbox, an email app, or every device signed into the same account.
When mail is delivered through a company or school, an administrator may control quarantine, retention, and blocked domains. Ask that administrator for the approved process instead of creating a personal rule that conflicts with organizational policy. In a mail app, remember that deleting a message locally may not report it to the provider; use the provider’s web interface when you need to classify spam or phishing.
Choose between keeping the address and using a separate one
You do not need a new address just because spam appeared. Compare the options against recovery reliability and the amount of separation you actually need.

If you switch, keep the old address available until the new one is verified and tested. A separate address is a compartmentalization choice, not a spam-proofing feature: messages sent to it still need provider-level filtering.
Before choosing an alias, check four practical questions: Can you sign in to the provider years from now? Can you reset its password without the old Grok address? Will it accept automated verification mail? Can you export or forward messages if you later change providers? xAI’s published account guidance does not certify any named alias service, so treat compatibility as something to confirm in the live account flow.

Why X privacy settings do not clean your inbox
Grok is available through the Grok website and apps, and it is also integrated with X. X’s documented controls cover matters such as use of public data and interactions, personalization, conversation history, and post visibility. They do not filter an external email inbox.
xAI’s privacy policy also distinguishes the X experience: use of Grok on X is governed by X’s privacy policy and terms. Therefore, do not assume that a setting changed in X applies to a Grok.com or Grok app account, or that either service can block mail delivered by Gmail or another provider. Handle the account identity in xAI’s account portal and the messages in the mailbox that receives them.
A practical protection routine
- Inventory access. Identify the exact address and sign-in method attached to Grok. Confirm that the mailbox works and that its own recovery options are current.
- Separate account and inbox decisions. If the only issue is unwanted mail, leave the sign-in address alone and apply provider controls. If the address is inaccessible or unsuitable for recovery, change it through
accounts.x.ai. - Classify each message. Use unsubscribe for a known list, spam reporting for unsolicited bulk mail, blocking for a persistent individual sender, and phishing reporting for deceptive requests.
- Protect against follow-up attempts. Do not reply to suspicious senders or confirm that your address is active. Verify account notices through a bookmarked or manually entered official site.
- Test the replacement address. After changing the Grok sign-in email, confirm that you can receive messages and complete a fresh sign-in or recovery process.
- Escalate compromise quickly. If the email changed without your approval, contact xAI support with your user ID and ownership details instead of repeatedly attempting password resets through unknown links.
Troubleshooting common cases
Grok mail is in Spam even though you want it
Check the provider’s Spam folder and mark the legitimate message as not spam using the provider’s control. Add a provider-side filter or permitted-sender rule only if you understand how it works on your account. Do not weaken all spam protection just to preserve one category of messages.
Blocking one address did not stop the campaign
Block and report the specific messages you receive. Bulk senders can rotate addresses or use different domains, so one block rule cannot cover every future message. For a legitimate list, unsubscribe through a recognized list control; for deceptive mail, report phishing rather than visiting its unsubscribe page.
You changed the email but cannot complete verification
Confirm that the replacement address was typed correctly, check its Spam and quarantine folders, and use the current instructions in the xAI account portal. If the address is controlled by an employer, school, or forwarding service, ask that provider whether automated verification messages are being rejected. Do not abandon the address until you know where account mail is delivered.
You used an old screenshot to find the setting
Account portals change labels and navigation. Start at accounts.x.ai and follow the controls currently displayed. The stable instruction from xAI is to update or add the sign-in email there; an old menu path may no longer match the interface.
You clicked a suspicious link
Stop interacting with the message, report it as phishing, and change any password you entered using the official service site—not a link in the email. Review recent account activity and contact the affected provider or xAI support if you supplied a Grok credential, recovery detail, or authentication code.
