Protecting a garden or farm from El Niño-related drought starts with your location, growing season, and water supply—not with the El Niño label alone. El Niño can shift seasonal rainfall odds, but its effects differ by region and are not guaranteed. Check your local seasonal outlook and drought conditions, then prepare a plan for the crops, beds, or livestock most at risk.
Does El Niño mean your garden or farm will face drought?
No. El Niño influences climate patterns, but it is not a global drought switch or a site-specific forecast. NOAA describes typical dryness in parts of Indonesia and Australia and wetter conditions in Peru, while emphasizing that expected impacts may not occur. Those broad patterns do not establish what will happen at a particular farm or garden.
Drought is a water-supply problem: the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit defines it as a precipitation deficiency over time that results in a water shortage. Agricultural effects depend on the drought’s severity and duration, what is exposed, and how well the operation is prepared. For your location, use current local forecasts and drought monitoring alongside information about your actual water sources.
What should you check before a dry spell?
Track local conditions, not just ENSO status
Check seasonal outlooks and drought information regularly. ENSO can inform planning, but it cannot tell you by itself whether your site will be short of water. In the southeastern United States, AgroClimate offers projected drought information and ENSO context for that region; elsewhere, consult the relevant regional or national monitoring services and local agricultural advisers.

Map water and decide priorities in advance
List your water sources, storage, delivery equipment, and any use restrictions. Identify which crops, garden beds, or livestock needs are most sensitive to a shortage. Rank crops by drought sensitivity, value, and growth stage so you can make deliberate choices if available water becomes limited. This is a practical planning approach, not a universal agency-prescribed ranking system.
For a farm, include livestock drinking water, forage, and other essential operations in the same assessment. Ask local Cooperative Extension or the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) about crop and variety selection, planting timing, irrigation planning, and grazing or forage contingencies. The right choice depends on local conditions; there is no universally appropriate crop list or planting date for El Niño.

Build soil resilience where it fits
Healthy soil can help regulate water, but no single amendment or practice will prevent drought impacts. Official agricultural guidance identifies reduced tillage, cover crops where feasible, diverse crop rotations, permanent cover, and other soil-health practices as potential parts of a resilience plan. Choose practices to suit your soil, climate, crops, and operational constraints rather than adopting them as a one-size-fits-all package.

Deliver water efficiently and follow local guidance
Use an irrigation method suited to your crop’s root depth, bed or field layout, water pressure, and available supply. Drip irrigation is one possible way to target delivery, but the available guidance does not establish a universal water-saving rate or show that a drip kit suits every farm, soil, or crop. Before installing one, check pressure, filtration requirements, maintenance needs, and local water rules.

Follow locally recommended watering amounts and timing for your crop and soil. A generic schedule cannot account for your location, soil, water source, or growing conditions. As supplies change, monitor water availability and crop stress and adjust the plan in response to observations and local advisories.
Protect the ground and avoid quick-fix claims
Maintain ground cover and soil structure where locally feasible. Practices such as cover crops or reduced tillage may support soil health, but their suitability depends on the operation and conditions. Do not assume a particular product or amendment will solve a water shortage.

What help is available to U.S. farms?
USDA Climate Hubs offer region-tailored climate resources. The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit also describes agricultural water planning and efficiency practices, while its listed NRCS and Farm Service Agency (FSA) resources include conservation planning, water conservation, and some forms of emergency support. Eligibility, program availability, and requirements vary, so check with the relevant local office rather than assuming a program applies to your operation.

There is no single crop choice that is right for every El Niño event. The outcome depends on local forecasts, drought status, soil, water access, growing season, and the crop’s needs. Use regional seasonal information and ask Cooperative Extension or NRCS for advice on varieties and planting timing. If a dry period is already developing, weigh each crop’s water needs and growth stage against your available supply before committing limited water.
How should you review your plan after the season?
After the dry period or growing season, note which crops, beds, water sources, and practices were most vulnerable. Use those observations to update your priorities and preparations. USDA Climate Hubs describes an adaptation-planning process of setting goals, assessing impacts, choosing actions, and evaluating their effectiveness; that cycle can help turn a difficult season into a more useful plan for the next one.
