Protect your garden by responding to local weather and soil conditions—not by assuming El Niño means your neighborhood will be hot or dry. Keep soil covered with mulch, choose plants suited to their light and water needs, and water deeply at the base in the morning. Check local forecasts, drought conditions, and watering rules to decide when and how much to water.

What El Niño tells you—and what it doesn’t

El Niño is a climate pattern that can influence seasonal rain and snow patterns across many parts of the United States, but it does not predict the weather or drought conditions in a particular garden. El Niño events also vary: warming can be concentrated in different parts of the equatorial Pacific, with differing effects on global weather. NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory notes that climate models still have difficulty representing some cloud and sea-surface temperature behavior relevant to forecasts. Treat seasonal outlooks as context, then make garden decisions using local forecasts, soil moisture, drought information, and water rules. NOAA explains drought types and impacts, while NOAA PMEL describes El Niño patterns.

How to protect garden soil and plants

Cover bare soil with mulch

Mulch helps conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and support soil health. NOAA Fisheries suggests applying 1–3 inches as needed and keeping it about an inch away from plant stems and tree trunks. A soil test can help determine whether the soil needs nutrients; add compost or other amendments only when appropriate for the soil and plants. See NOAA Fisheries’ garden guidance.

Match plants to their location

Choose regionally appropriate plants, including native plants where practical, and place them according to their sunlight and shade requirements. A plant that prefers partial shade may face more stress and need more water in full sun. Consider the plant’s water needs after establishment as well as its regional suitability; a generic drought-tolerant seed mix cannot be recommended without knowing your location.

How and when to water during hot, dry weather

Water deeply, guided by soil moisture

Deep, less frequent watering encourages roots to grow farther into the soil. Frequent small amounts can leave plants with shallow roots that dry out quickly. Check moisture in the root zone and adjust to local conditions rather than following a fixed calendar or applying a universal volume.

Direct water to the base of plants

Water at the base rather than overhead. A soaker hose or drip irrigation can deliver water to the root zone; slow application can reduce runoff and evaporation and allow water to penetrate more deeply. Which setup works best depends on the bed’s size and shape, installation needs, coverage, and local water rules. There is no universal winner, and the cited guidance does not establish that one system is more efficient in every garden.

Water in the morning when possible

NOAA Fisheries recommends morning watering and says watering before 10:00 a.m. can reduce evaporation and give water time to soak in before the day’s heat. Follow local watering restrictions if they differ.

Use local conditions to make the plan

Check your local forecast, drought status, and soil moisture, then follow water-use rules for your area. NOAA’s AgroClimate tools cover the southeastern United States and include information on drought, heat stress, temperature, and precipitation for agricultural decisions. Gardeners elsewhere should consult the relevant local extension service and climate or drought resources. A soil test can guide amendment decisions, while a regionally appropriate native nursery or supplier can help with plant selection.
