The best protection is a simple routine: keep grit and hard objects away from the inner display, check the screen and hinge before folding, and avoid pressing or poking the panel. Foldable screens and their factory-installed protectors have model-specific care rules, so do not remove the liner or add another screen protector unless your phone maker explicitly says it is safe.
What should I check before closing a foldable phone?
Before you fold the phone, look across both halves of the inner display and around the hinge. Brush away visible grit gently and remove anything that could be trapped between the panels. A card, coin, key, crumb, or fine particle caught inside can scratch or puncture the main display when the phone closes.
- Keep sand, dirt, crumbs, and other fine particles away from the open phone.
- Check the screen and hinge area each time before folding, especially after using the phone outdoors or on a dusty surface.
- Close the phone gently; do not force it shut if something seems to be in the way.
Google warns that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens and advises avoiding crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects. Samsung specifically cautions that cards, coins, or keys caught between the screens can damage the main display. Motorola also tells Razr users to check for obstructions between the screens and hinge.

How can I avoid scratches and pressure damage?
Keep pens, fingernails, styluses, keys, and other hard or sharp items away from the inner panel. Do not press hard on the display, particularly in the middle, and do not use a fingernail or pen to operate it. When carrying the phone, keep it away from loose objects that could press against it. Follow your model’s carrying instructions; for example, Motorola’s Razr 5G guidance says to close the phone before putting it in a pocket or purse.

Closing a foldable does not make it immune to pressure damage. Avoid sitting on the phone, packing it where heavy objects can press on it, or forcing the hinge against resistance. An exact-model case may help protect the exterior in transit, but it is not a substitute for checking the inner screen for debris before closing.
Can I put a screen protector on a foldable’s inner screen?
Do not assume that a protector made for a conventional phone—or even a film advertised for a foldable—is suitable for your inner display. The factory-installed liner, permitted replacement process, and advice on third-party films vary by manufacturer and model.

These are instructions for the named devices and guidance, not a universal rule for every foldable. Check the current owner’s manual or support page for your exact model and region before removing, replacing, or adding any film. Service and warranty policies can vary by model, location, and policy version.

Usually, do not remove or lift it yourself. Google explicitly says not to peel back the Pixel Fold’s pre-installed protector; Samsung says not to remove its main-screen protective top layer. For a Motorola Razr 2024 with a liner that bubbles, warps, or separates, Motorola directs users to authorized service personnel. If your model is not listed here, check its own manufacturer guidance rather than applying another brand’s instructions.

How should I clean a foldable inner display?
Start with a clean, soft cloth and gentle pressure. Google recommends a soft lint-free cloth and a dry cloth for dust or smudges; Samsung recommends a soft, dry cloth; Motorola’s Razr 2024 guide recommends a dry, soft cloth and cautions against abrasive cloths. Do not generalize special cleaning or disinfection options mentioned for one model to other foldables. Follow the instructions for your phone before using liquids or disinfectants.

A practical care routine
- Before folding: Inspect both screen halves and the hinge for grit, crumbs, or objects.
- While using the phone: Avoid sharp contact, fingernails, and concentrated or excessive pressure.
- When carrying it: Keep it away from loose keys and other hard objects; close it first when your model’s guidance recommends that.
- When cleaning: Use the soft, dry or lint-free cloth allowed by your model’s instructions.
- If the liner lifts or changes shape: Stop trying to peel or press it back into place and consult the manufacturer’s authorized service guidance.
