To get distinctive cartoon art, describe what the image should contain and how it should look—its subject, pose, shapes, linework, colors, and lighting—instead of using a living artist’s name as a style shortcut. This gives the generator concrete creative direction, though prompt wording alone cannot guarantee legal originality, non-infringement, ownership, or commercial clearance.
Build the prompt from content to visual direction
Start with the cartoon’s subject and defining features, then specify its action or expression, setting and composition, and the visual qualities you want. Adobe recommends specific, descriptive prompts and suggests including elements such as feeling, style, and lighting; it also advises revising wording and settings when a result misses the intended look. See Adobe’s guide to writing effective text prompts for Firefly, last updated June 16, 2026.
A useful structure is:
[cartoon subject and defining features] + [action or expression] + [setting and composition] + [shape language and linework] + [palette and shading] + [mood and lighting] + [background/detail level]
For example: “A round, blue, long-eared moon rabbit delivering tiny letters across a rooftop garden; curious expression, springing pose, chunky rounded silhouette, bold clean contour lines, flat limited palette of indigo, coral, and cream, simple cel shading, playful picture-book cartoon, low-angle composition, starry dusk background with a few graphic clouds.” This is an illustrative template, not a tested recipe or a promise of a particular result.

Describe observable traits instead of naming an artist
Translate the look you have in mind into features a model can interpret. Choose details from the categories below and combine them in your own words rather than asking for a living artist’s signature style.
- Shape and proportions: rounded geometric forms, angular silhouettes, oversized heads, or elongated limbs.
- Linework: thick uneven outlines, fine pencil contours, crisp edges, or loose expressive marks.
- Color and shading: flat primary colors, a narrow muted palette, simple cel shading, or visible watercolor washes.
- Texture and medium: screen-print texture, soft pencil, layered cut-paper shapes, or a smooth digital finish.
- Composition and mood: dramatic negative space, playful asymmetry, a close-up pose, or warm, dramatic lighting.
For example, “rounded geometric shapes, thick uneven outlines, flat primary colors, minimal shadows” is more actionable than a name. Other directions might be “angular silhouettes, narrow palette, screen-print texture, dramatic negative space,” “soft pencil contours, visible watercolor washes, warm muted colors, loose expressive poses,” or “simple cut-paper shapes, crisp edges, layered colors, playful asymmetry.” These are starting points, not fixed recipes. Adobe’s overview of art styles for AI prompts discusses broad movements such as Bauhaus and Impressionism as possible directions, along with effects and controls for exploring different looks. A movement can suggest a general visual vocabulary; it should not be treated as a substitute for imitating a contemporary artist’s distinctive work.

Use references and controls thoughtfully
If a generator provides a style-reference feature, use an image you created, have permission to use, or choose from the tool’s curated collection. Direct the tool toward specific qualities in that reference—such as its palette, texture, lighting, or medium—rather than treating the image as permission to reproduce someone’s signature look.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdobe says Firefly’s Style reference feature guides the look and feel of generated variations and documents choosing either a user image or a curated reference. See Adobe’s Style reference documentation, last updated June 19, 2026. Feature names and controls vary by product and may change, so check the interface and terms for the generator you use.

Iterate by correcting one visible mismatch at a time
Generation is easier to steer when each revision responds to something you can actually see in the output. Adobe recommends experimenting with descriptive prompt wording and settings; its style guidance also discusses refining elements such as color, lighting, and composition.
- Write the scene plainly. State the subject, action, expression, and setting without style references.
- Add three or four visual traits. Start with concrete choices such as silhouette, line quality, palette, and shading.
- Generate an initial set. Compare the variations against the image you intended.
- Name the mismatch. Be specific: “the outlines are too thin” or “the palette looks too realistic.”
- Revise one or two details or controls. Compare the new variations so you can tell which change helped.
- Reuse a result as a reference only if you have rights to use it. If the image belongs to someone else, do not assume that including it is permitted.
What prompt-writing can and cannot establish
Describing visual traits instead of naming a living artist is a practical originality-minded way to direct an image generator. It is not a legal test. The official guidance cited here explains prompting, broad style directions, and Firefly reference controls; it does not establish that any prompt makes an output legally safe, non-infringing, owned by the user, or cleared for commercial use. For commercial work, check the terms that apply to the exact tool, model, and plan, and consider appropriate legal advice for your circumstances.
