Promote affiliate links by placing relevant recommendations in useful content, then sharing that content where your audience is already looking for help. The eight strategies below are practical options—not a guaranteed formula for traffic, conversions, or income. Disclose your financial relationship clearly wherever the recommendation appears, and check the rules for your location, platform, and affiliate program.

How do I promote affiliate links?

Start with the reader’s question, not the link. Explain a problem, help someone compare options, or show how a product works; include an affiliate recommendation only when it genuinely fits. Be candid about what you have and have not tried, and do not make product claims you cannot support.

Then choose the channel that suits the content and audience. A detailed comparison may work as an article or video; a concise tip may suit a social post or newsletter. Each placement should be useful on its own and should carry its own clear disclosure.

8 ways to share affiliate recommendations

1. Publish helpful, search-focused articles

Write about a specific problem readers are trying to solve, such as choosing a router for a small apartment or finding software for a particular workflow. Explain the relevant criteria and tradeoffs, then link to products or services that fit. Search-focused writing can make answers easier to discover, but no article format or SEO tactic guarantees a ranking or a sale.

2. Create comparisons and tutorials

Comparisons help readers understand how options differ; tutorials show how a product or service works in a real task. State the criteria you used, explain meaningful limitations, and distinguish firsthand testing from information gathered elsewhere. Do not imply that you used a product if you did not.

3. Make video reviews or demonstrations

Show the product in the use case you discuss, and explain where it may not be a good fit. Make the relationship clear in the video itself, using spoken words and visible text, and place another disclosure near affiliate links in the description. For a livestream, repeat the disclosure periodically so viewers who join later can see or hear it.

4. Share useful social posts

Use a post to answer a focused question, explain a feature, or point readers to a fuller guide. Put a clear disclosure in each promotional post; do not assume followers saw a disclosure in an earlier post or on your profile. If you use a platform’s built-in disclosure feature, do not rely on that tool alone.

5. Send relevant recommendations in an email newsletter

Make recommendations a useful part of the newsletter rather than sending links without context. Explain why an item is relevant and make the financial relationship clear where readers encounter the endorsement, before they act on it. Email and privacy requirements vary; check the rules that apply to your audience and location.

6. Contribute to relevant communities

Answer questions in communities where your knowledge is relevant, and follow the group’s and platform’s rules about promotional links. Avoid unsolicited link drops. If you have a paid relationship with a recommended product, disclose it so the recommendation is not mistaken for an independent one.

7. Adapt useful content for other channels

A comparison article can become a short social explanation, a video demonstration, or a newsletter item. Adapt the material to each channel instead of pasting the same promotion everywhere. A disclosure in one version does not automatically disclose the relationship in another, so include an appropriate disclosure with every placement.

8. Review performance and refine placements

Use the reporting available from your affiliate program and publishing platforms to see which content readers engage with and whether links are being used. Compare like with like—for example, similar content or placements—and make measured changes to clarity, relevance, or position. There is no universal performance benchmark established here, so treat your own results as context-specific rather than a promise of what others will achieve.

Where can I share affiliate links?

Possible placements include your website or blog, social posts, video descriptions, email newsletters, and relevant online communities. Whether a particular placement is permitted depends on the affiliate program, the platform, and the rules of the community. For Amazon Associates, for example, accepted social network applications must provide the exact page URL; Amazon’s current U.S. help page lists Facebook (excluding personal pages), Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch.tv. Check the Amazon social network and site requirements before applying or posting, because program terms can change.

How to disclose affiliate relationships clearly

U.S. Federal Trade Commission staff guidance says a material connection, such as payment tied to a recommendation, should be clear and hard to miss where the endorsement appears. A notice only on an About page, at the end of a post, or behind a “more” click may not be seen. Use simple language that tells readers about the relationship, and put it next to the recommendation or link.

The FTC FAQ says “affiliate link” alone may not explain that the publisher earns money from purchases. It says “paid link” placed next to an affiliate link should adequately communicate the link’s nature. That is FTC guidance, not a universal legal safe harbor; the requirements that apply depend on the context and jurisdiction. See the FTC’s disclosure guidance and Endorsement Guides FAQ.

Video, live streams, and platform disclosure tools

For social video, include the disclosure in the video rather than relying only on its description. Audio and on-screen text can make it understandable in different viewing situations. For livestreams, repeat it because viewers may join at any point. FTC staff also cautions that a platform’s disclosure feature may not be effective by itself.

Amazon Associates has additional requirements

Amazon Associates’ U.S. help page requires a legally compliant disclosure with links and the statement “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” Amazon says this statement must be clearly and conspicuously present on the site and associated with the account for social-media user-generated content. Review Amazon’s disclosure requirements and the applicable marketplace agreement before publishing; program terms can change.

Amazon also says it looks for original content and customer value, prohibits unapproved use of its trademarks, and does not allow incentives or requests for support in exchange for link use. Its rules and accepted placements may differ by marketplace, so consult the current terms for the account you use.

Make each recommendation trustworthy

  • Connect the recommendation to a real reader need and explain why it is relevant.
  • Disclose the financial relationship clearly beside the endorsement or link.
  • Be honest about your experience; do not claim to have tested something you have not tried.
  • Keep claims about features, results, or benefits within what you can substantiate.
  • Check current affiliate-program, platform, and community rules before sharing.

The FTC materials cited here describe U.S. guidance: its social-media disclosure guide is dated November 2019, and its FAQ notes that the Endorsement Guides were revised in 2023. They do not establish requirements for every country. Creators publishing elsewhere should check local rules as well as current platform and program terms.
