Start by making sure nearby customers can find accurate information and take the next step: call, book, order, or visit. Then use a few channels you can keep current, reconnect with existing customers, and test paid promotion only when you can measure a meaningful result. No online channel guarantees more visits, and you cannot pay Google for a higher local search ranking.
1. Fix the information customers see first
Your online listing is often the first stop for someone deciding whether to contact or visit you. Verify your Google Business Profile and check that the real-world business name, category, address or service area, hours, phone number, and website are correct. Update special or holiday hours when needed.
Google says complete, accurate profile information makes a business more likely to appear for relevant local searches. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence; Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Accurate information can help customers find and assess you, but it cannot override how far they are from your business or guarantee placement.

Add recent photos or video that reflect what is currently available, and respond helpfully to reviews. Eligible retailers in some countries or regions can investigate displaying in-store products on their profiles; availability depends on eligibility, and Google excludes certain regulated products under its policies. Do not assume every retailer or product qualifies.

Make the customer action unmistakable
Use a working phone number and a website or page relevant to that location. Make booking, ordering, store hours, and offer details easy to find. If you promote a sale or giveaway on your profile, state its terms and qualifications and honor the promise you make.
2. Choose channels for the job, not for their popularity
You do not need to post everywhere. Pick a small mix based on where your customers can actually be reached and what you have time to maintain. These channels do different jobs: search listings and high-intent ads help people looking for a provider now; email and social updates can bring existing customers back; local partnerships and referrals borrow trust from people and organizations nearby.

| Channel | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Business profile and local search | People actively looking for a nearby product or service | Keep details accurate; visibility is affected by relevance, distance, and prominence, not a paid ranking request. |
| Customer email and social updates | Repeat contact, useful news, and current offers | Use an opt-in list where appropriate and choose channels you can keep current. |
| Community directories, local media, and professional groups | Reaching a relevant local or business-to-business audience | Check that listings fit your niche and remain accurate; prioritize quality over appearing everywhere. |
| Complementary-business partnerships, referrals, and local events | Recommendations and local trust | Choose partners or events that share a plausible customer audience, then make it easy to follow up online. |
Practical organic options include useful local social posts, professional groups for business-to-business firms, accurate niche and community directories, local media, and partnerships with complementary nearby businesses. Referrals and relevant local events can extend your reach; online posts and customer lists can help invite people to them. The Small Business Administration’s online marketing guidance was published in 2017, so its broad ideas remain useful, but check that any platform or service example still applies.
Follow up with existing customers respectfully
Where you have permission to contact customers, a thank-you or follow-up email can invite feedback, share a useful update, or link to a current offer or booking page. A newsletter can point readers to useful content on your site as well as business updates. Ask for honest reviews without conditioning the request on positive sentiment; do not offer a reward in exchange for a positive review.

3. Treat paid promotion as a measured test
Paid local promotion is optional. Before spending, define the audience and the outcome you want. Google’s local marketing guidance recommends location-based messaging, clear images or short video, and a specific offer where it makes sense. A local ad should give people a relevant reason to act, not merely announce that your business exists.
Choose an ad type that fits your business
Local Services Ads may suit some service businesses with active local demand, but eligibility depends on service category and availability. Costs vary by industry, competition, and geography. Start only with an amount you can afford to test, and set a time period and success measure in advance. Do not assume the platform will produce profitable calls, bookings, or visits.

Google describes how online interactions can lead to in-store outcomes, including conversion actions and, where available, local actions, store-visit conversions, and store-sales measurement. Access to these features is not universal. Google’s page reports that IKEA Belgium attributed a 361% year-over-year increase in revenue from Search and Shopping campaigns after implementing Smart Bidding for store visits; that is a company-specific vendor case, not a forecast for a small local business.

4. Measure customer actions, not attention alone
Decide what would count as useful business before you post or launch a campaign. Depending on your business, that might be qualified calls, bookings, direction requests, online orders, coupon redemptions, or in-store sales. Match the measurement to the goal: clicks and views can show exposure, but by themselves they do not establish that someone visited or bought.
Best Value
- "Buy Local" Sign for your home, office, business or shop.
- Dimensions: 2"H X 5" W
- Premium Laser Engraved Plastic
- Sign includes, optional, strong foam double sided adhesive tape for mounting on most surfaces.
- Perfect wall or door sign for your home, office, business or shop.
- Choose one primary action. For example, a restaurant might track online orders, while a repair service might track qualified calls or booked appointments.
- Add a way to identify the source. Use campaign links or offer codes where practical. Ask customers how they heard about you, and record the answer consistently.
- Compare results over the same period. Track online-originated sales separately from face-to-face sales and note the associated campaign costs. The SBA recommends separating online and face-to-face sales in business analysis.
- Make a decision from the evidence. Keep, change, or stop a channel based on the inquiries and sales it appears to contribute, not its reach alone. Allow for the fact that some customers see an online message and complete the purchase in person.
Not every small business or campaign can use every conversion-measurement feature. Keep your own simple records if platform reporting is unavailable, and treat reported clicks as an intermediate signal rather than proof of a visit or sale. The SBA’s business performance guidance can help frame the comparison.
5. A practical order of work
- Correct your profile details, hours, and contact route.
- Add current images, respond to reviews, and clarify how to book, order, or visit.
- Choose one or two channels that match how your customers find and return to businesses like yours.
- Contact existing customers only through appropriate, permission-based channels, and make any offer specific and easy to act on.
- If you test paid promotion, set an affordable limit, define one customer action, and track what happens through the sale or visit where possible.
There is no dated, generalizable estimate in the available evidence for how much extra foot traffic a local business should expect from online promotion. Set expectations from your own tracked inquiries and sales rather than a promised lift.
