The right SNAP workflow depends on two decisions you should make before clicking a processor: what you want to derive (for example, ocean colour, sea-surface temperature, or a stitched image) and which Sentinel-3 instrument and product level you have. SNAP’s Sentinel-3 Optical Toolbox documents OLCI and SLSTR processing; SRAL data belongs in the Sentinel Altimetry Toolbox instead. Once the instrument, level and required resolution are clear, install the appropriate toolbox, open the product manifest, choose an operation that matches the data, check quality flags and metadata, then save or automate the repeatable chain.
Start with the measurement you need
Sentinel-3 files are not interchangeable. The instrument, processing level, baseline and spatial resolution determine which reader and processor make sense. Write down the intended output before opening SNAP:

SNAP is a general platform as well as a collection of mission toolboxes. General features include band arithmetic, masks, reprojection and orthorectification, multithreaded processing and the Graph Processing Framework (GPF). Those capabilities help after you have selected a sensor-specific path; they do not remove the need to understand the product’s measurement and level.

Install SNAP and the optical toolbox
ESA’s download page listed SNAP 14.0.0 when checked on 18 August 2026 at 15:15 UTC. Treat that as a dated availability note rather than a promise that it is still the newest build: check the download page and release notes immediately before installing. Choose the installer for your operating system, and verify that the Sentinel toolboxes include the Optical Toolbox. SNAP allows additional toolboxes to be added later through its plugin manager.

- Download the current SNAP installer from ESA’s official SNAP distribution page and read the release notes for that version.
- Install the desktop application using the installer for your platform. Keep the installation location, Java requirements and available disk space in mind for large Sentinel-3 scenes.
- Open SNAP and use the plugin manager to confirm that the Sentinel-3 Optical Toolbox is installed. Add it if it was not selected during setup.
- Restart SNAP after installing or updating a toolbox, then check the installed version in the application’s About or product-information dialog.
Release compatibility matters. SNAP 14.0 Optical Toolbox notes report faster Sentinel-3 readers, updated Sentinel-3 DDDB handling, support for SL_2_WST baseline 004 and fixes affecting OLCI/DDDB reading. An older SNAP installation can therefore behave differently from a current one when opening a newer product baseline. If a file that should be valid fails to open, compare the product baseline with the release notes before changing the data.
Identify the instrument, level and archive structure
OLCI
OLCI is the optical imaging instrument used for colour and radiometry workflows. Before processing, determine whether your archive is Level-1B, Level-2 or another delivered level, and note the bands and quality information included. A processor that expects atmospherically corrected reflectances cannot be treated as a direct Level-1B operation without the required correction steps.
SLSTR
SLSTR supports separate reader choices for 500 m and 1 km handling in the documented SNAP import dialog. The choice changes how the bands are represented and resampled; it is not merely a display preference. SLSTR also has operations for Level-1B PDU stitching, regridding and ARC SST processing, each with its own input assumptions.
SRAL
SRAL is part of Sentinel-3, but it is outside the Optical Toolbox scope. The Sentinel-3 import help explicitly directs SRAL users to the Sentinel Altimetry Toolbox. Installing the optical toolbox alone will not provide a supported SRAL workflow.
Read the product name and manifest
Sentinel-3 distributions are commonly delivered as a zip archive containing a directory whose name ends in .SEN3. Inside it is the product manifest, normally xfdumanifest.xml. Preserve the complete directory while extracting; moving individual measurement files out of the product can break relative paths and metadata references.
Open a Sentinel-3 product in SNAP
The following menu path is documented in the SNAP 10.0 import help. SNAP 14 and later may revise labels or reader behavior, so confirm the equivalent command in your installed release if the wording differs.

- Extract the Sentinel-3 zip archive to a location with enough free space. Do not open the archive in place if your operating system presents it as a virtual folder.
- In SNAP, choose File / Import / Optical Sensors / Sentinel-3.
- Select the extracted
xfdumanifest.xmlfile and continue. - Alternatively, choose File / Open Product… and select the manifest, or drag the
*.SEN3folder or its manifest into Product Explorer. - Wait for the reader to populate Product Explorer. Expand the product, bands, tie-point grids, flags and metadata before launching a processor.
If the reader offers more than one Sentinel-3 format or instrument, select the entry matching the product name rather than forcing a generic raster reader. A generic reader may expose files without applying the mission-specific metadata and geolocation handling that downstream operations expect.

Choose the SLSTR resolution option deliberately
For SLSTR, the documented reader presents three meaningful behaviors:

Do not compare results from these modes as though they were identical inputs. Record the selected mode in your processing notes, especially when combining thermal, visible and short-wave infrared measurements.
Match SNAP processors to the product and objective
ESA’s Sentinel-3 feature list is a menu of capabilities, not a single validated recipe. Select an operation only after checking its required instrument, product level, bands, masks and geometry.
OLCI radiometry corrections
The OLCI radiometry processor includes corrections such as gas absorption and Rayleigh correction. Use it when your objective requires corrected radiometric quantities and the input product is at a level for which the processor is designed. Inspect the output band names, units and quality layers rather than assuming that every correction is applied in every mode.

OWT classification is based on atmospherically corrected reflectances. Forel–Ule classification is another listed OLCI capability. Confirm that the input product contains the expected corrected reflectances, that invalid or cloud-contaminated pixels are masked, and that the scene’s water conditions fall within the method’s intended domain. A classification layer should be treated as an analysis result that still requires quality screening, not as a replacement for inspecting the source bands.

FLH and MCI retrievals
FLH and MCI retrievals derive indices from selected OLCI spectral bands. Check the processor’s band mapping and units in the operation dialog or current help, then retain the input product and processing parameters alongside the output. If your product level does not contain the required corrected quantities, perform the supported correction chain first or use a product that does.
SLSTR L1B PDU stitching
SLSTR Level-1B data can be supplied as processing data units. The listed stitching processor combines those units into a usable scene representation. Verify that all expected PDUs are present and inspect seam areas, geolocation and masks after stitching. Stitching does not by itself provide an SST retrieval or atmospheric correction.
Regridding and reprojection
SNAP can regrid AATSR/SLSTR data and provides general reprojection and orthorectification tools. Use these only when a common grid is required by the analysis or by a downstream model. Choose the target coordinate reference system, pixel spacing and resampling method explicitly, and keep the native product available so that the transformation is reproducible.

The ARC SST processor is listed for SLSTR. Before running it, verify the required input level and thermal bands, inspect cloud and quality masks, and record the processor settings. Do not infer that an ARC SST output is validated for your region or application solely because the processor completes successfully.
Inspect the product before and after processing
Opening a product is not the same as confirming that it is scientifically usable. Make these checks before interpreting a map or exporting values:
- Metadata: confirm sensing time, orbit or acquisition identifiers, processing baseline, instrument and product level.
- Bands: verify that the expected spectral or thermal bands are present, with sensible units, wavelengths and dimensions.
- Geometry: inspect geolocation, coordinate reference information and pixel spacing. Check whether a processor has changed the grid.
- Flags and masks: look for cloud, land, invalid, saturation and other quality layers. SNAP’s Sentinel-3 import help recommends considering the recommended flags for OLCI Level-2 data.
- Resolution: confirm whether data remain native, were opened at 500 m or 1 km for SLSTR, or were resampled by a later operation.
- Visual sanity check: display representative bands and a mask. Abrupt stripes, empty areas or implausible values often indicate a reader, baseline, geolocation or masking problem rather than a meaningful geophysical signal.
These checks are practical safeguards, not a complete validation method for every science objective. For quantitative work, apply the uncertainty, calibration and validation procedures appropriate to the product and application.

A repeatable desktop workflow
For a first scene, use the desktop interface to make each assumption visible:
- Record the intended measurement, instrument, product level, processing baseline and desired output grid.
- Install the current SNAP release and Optical Toolbox, then note the exact version.
- Extract the archive and open the manifest or
.SEN3folder. - For SLSTR, choose native, 500 m or 1 km handling intentionally.
- Expand metadata, bands and flags in Product Explorer and identify the layers required by your operation.
- Run the smallest appropriate sensor-specific processor on one scene or a clipped test area when possible.
- Inspect output bands, units, masks, geolocation and resolution before exporting.
- Save the product and processing parameters in a format suitable for your downstream software, while retaining the original archive and an unmodified SNAP-readable product.
Automate a chain with GPF or Python
Graph Processing Framework
SNAP’s Graph Processing Framework lets you represent a sequence of operators as a graph and run it interactively or from the command line. A graph is useful when every scene should receive the same sequence: for example, read a product, apply a supported correction, mask invalid pixels, reproject to a defined grid and write an output. Build and test the graph in the desktop application first, inspect an output manually, then run the graph on additional products. Keep operator names, parameters, input level and output paths under version control.
Command-line processing
Command-line execution is appropriate for scheduled or batch work, but it does not make an unsuitable processor suitable. Validate the graph against more than one scene, check that each archive has the same product structure and baseline assumptions, and capture logs and software version with the outputs.
Python and Java APIs
ESA documents Java and Python APIs for plugin development. SNAP’s download information notes that Python support was substantially revised in versions 12 and later. If you use Python, follow the current esa_snappy instructions for the installed SNAP release instead of copying a script written for an older version. Confirm the interpreter, environment variables, JVM settings and toolbox visibility before attempting a large batch.
Common failures and practical fixes
The product will not open
- Confirm that the archive was fully extracted and that
xfdumanifest.xmlis inside the intact.SEN3directory. - Check that the Optical Toolbox is installed and enabled.
- Read the product name and processing baseline, then compare them with the installed SNAP release notes. New baselines may require a newer reader.
- Try the mission-specific Sentinel-3 import route rather than a generic file opener.
- If the failure persists, preserve the error log and test with a known-compatible product before altering source files.
SRAL is missing from the optical import
This is expected: SRAL is not supported by the Optical Toolbox. Install or open the Sentinel Altimetry Toolbox and follow its SRAL documentation.

Bands have unexpected sizes
For SLSTR, check whether you selected 500 m, 1 km or native-resolution handling. The 1 km choice resamples all data; the native option preserves differing source resolutions. Also inspect whether a later regridding or reprojection operator changed the grid.

A processor is unavailable or produces empty output
Verify the instrument and level required by the operation. OWT expects atmospherically corrected reflectances, while SLSTR PDU stitching is an L1B operation. Check that required bands and masks exist and that your scene is not entirely excluded by quality flags.
The map looks shifted or contains seams
Inspect geolocation and tie-point information, confirm the chosen stitching or reprojection settings, and compare a known landmark or coastline with the source product. Do not export a visually attractive result until the coordinate reference system and pixel spacing are verified.
Version and documentation discipline
Use the help bundled with your installed SNAP version as the authority for current menu labels and parameters. The commonly cited Sentinel-3 import instructions are from SNAP help version 10.0; they remain useful for the manifest and .SEN3 workflow but should not be presented as proof that every label is unchanged in SNAP 14.0 or a later release. ESA’s documentation index also points to integrated or online help, a user guide, wiki material and tutorials. When a product fails after a software update, check the release notes for reader, DDDB and baseline changes before rebuilding your workflow.

For each derived product, retain a short processing record containing:
- SNAP and toolbox version, including the release date if relevant;
- source product name, instrument, level and processing baseline;
- the exact reader choice, including SLSTR resolution handling;
- operators and parameter values, in order;
- mask and flag rules;
- target projection, pixel spacing and resampling method;
- output format, naming convention and processing date;
- any warnings, failed scenes or manual exclusions.
This record makes a desktop result transferable to a GPF graph or a version-matched Python batch and lets you distinguish a genuine scene change from a reader or baseline change.
