Wi-Fi Direct lets a compatible printer connect directly to a phone, tablet, or computer, so you can print without joining a router-based Wi-Fi network. Enable the feature on the printer, join its Wi-Fi Direct network from your device, then select the printer in the app or print dialog. The exact menus and connection steps depend on the printer model.
What Wi-Fi Direct does—and what it does not do
Wi-Fi Direct creates a local wireless connection between a printer and another device. It can be useful when there is no router available or when a guest needs to print without joining the household or office network. Epson’s guide describes printing directly without a wireless router or access point, and HP says its Wi-Fi Direct connection can send print jobs without an internet connection on most HP printers released after 2014. Epson’s Wi-Fi Direct setup guide and HP’s setup documentation explain these uses.
This is a local printing link, not a substitute for a router or an internet connection. It does not provide general network access through the printer. Remote printing and other online features may require the printer to be connected to a full network.
How to connect a device to a printer with Wi-Fi Direct
Use this general sequence as a guide; the printer’s manual takes precedence because names, buttons, and confirmation steps vary by model.

- UPC: 198828789662
- Weight: 10.450 lbs
- Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer. Look in its network or wireless settings. Some printers use a control-panel menu; others may require a button sequence or an app.
- Find the printer’s network name and password. The Wi-Fi Direct SSID and password may be shown on the printer’s display, on a printed information page, in the manufacturer’s app, or in its embedded web settings.
- Join the printer’s network from your device. Open the phone, tablet, or computer’s Wi-Fi settings and select the network that matches the printer. Check the name carefully, especially if other nearby printers are using similar names.
- Complete any security prompt. Enter the displayed Wi-Fi Direct password or approve the connection on the printer if asked.
- Send the print job. Open the document or photo, choose Print, and select the printer. A computer may need the printer maker’s driver or network software before it can print.
- Reconnect to your usual Wi-Fi if needed. Your device may have left its regular network to join the printer’s direct connection.
Epson’s guide, for example, has users enable Wi-Fi Direct from the printer’s LCD, view the SSID and password, and join that network from the device. It also says devices disconnect when the printer is turned off and must connect again after it is turned back on. See Epson’s model-specific instructions.
How setup differs by device and printer
The sequence above is not a universal menu path. HP’s setup instructions illustrate how the method can change by platform: its documented Windows flow includes adding a printer and entering a WPS PIN within 90 seconds; its Android flow uses the HP Print Service Plugin; and its iPhone and iPad flow joins the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network and may use AirPrint. These are HP-specific examples, not steps to apply to every printer. Check HP’s setup instructions or the official guide for your exact model.

Wi-Fi Direct versus a regular Wi-Fi connection
With a regular Wi-Fi setup, the printer and device communicate through a router. With Wi-Fi Direct, they connect to each other. Choose the direct method when you need local printing and do not have access to the router-based network; use a full network connection when you need features that depend on network or internet access.

HP’s documentation distinguishes Wi-Fi Direct from its older HP wireless direct feature: in HP’s comparison, Wi-Fi Direct requires a WPA2 password, while HP wireless direct makes the password optional. The modes also differ in automatic discovery and whether a client can stay connected to the internet at the same time. These distinctions describe HP’s features, not a universal rule for other printer brands. Read HP’s feature and security comparison.

What to check if the printer does not appear
- Confirm Wi-Fi Direct is enabled and ready. Check the printer’s wireless or network menu, and make sure it is not waiting for a prompt.
- Check the network and printer selection. Make sure your device joined the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct SSID and that the print dialog targets the intended printer. HP notes that its Wi-Fi Direct network name often begins with “DIRECT.”
- Verify the password or approval. Recheck the displayed password and look for a connection confirmation on the printer.
- Move the devices closer. Keep the phone or computer near the printer while connecting and printing.
- Reconnect cleanly. Restart the printer and device, then try again. If the network is still unavailable, forget or remove that Wi-Fi network on the device and join it again.
- Check computer software. Confirm that the correct driver or manufacturer software is installed.
HP’s setup and troubleshooting guidance supports these checks. Avoid restoring network settings as an early step: reset procedures differ by model, so follow the printer’s own manual if a reset is necessary. HP printer setup and troubleshooting.

“Wireless” does not by itself confirm Wi-Fi Direct support. Check the specifications or user guide for the exact printer model and look for the feature by name. The official HP and Epson sources cited here document the feature for their supported printers, but they do not establish compatibility across all wireless printers.
