You can print on index cards from Word if the card size, Word page setup, and your printer’s feed path and media limits all match. First measure the cards and check the manual for your exact printer; Word alone cannot guarantee that a printer will accept them.
1. Measure the cards and check printer compatibility
Use the card’s actual dimensions rather than assuming all index cards are the same size. Common examples include 3 × 5 inches and 4 × 6 inches, but the size your printer can handle depends on its model, driver, and feed path.
Consult the manual for your exact printer before loading card stock. Check the supported dimensions, which tray or manual-feed path to use, the media-type setting, and the accepted stock weight. Manufacturer examples are model-specific: a Canon manual documents 3.00 × 5.00-inch support for particular models, while Lexmark’s Card Stock & Label Guide identifies 3 × 5-inch cards as narrow media for a multipurpose feeder and gives tray-specific stock limits. Neither example establishes compatibility for other printers. Canon printer manuals and Lexmark support documentation can help locate device guidance; use the manual for your own model.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the size is missing, check whether your printer driver offers a custom paper size and how that driver requires it to be defined. The printer and driver determine which sizes are available to print. Microsoft’s documented custom-size and card-stock instructions in this context are for Publisher and printer properties, not a universal Word-specific custom-size path. Microsoft’s card-stock guidance for Publisher is useful adjacent guidance, but its steps should not be treated as Word instructions.
3. Lay out the card and preview it
Keep text and graphics inside the printer’s printable area. Non-printable margins vary by device, so avoid placing important content right against the card edge. Set the orientation to match your design, then use Word’s print preview to check that the content fits the page and has not been unexpectedly scaled.

Microsoft Support says, “Before you print, you can preview your document and specify which pages you want.” Its Word for Windows printing guidance applies to Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016–2024.
4. Test the layout on plain paper
Before using card stock, print the design on plain paper. Place that sheet against a card to see whether the text is centered, the orientation is correct, and the margins leave enough room. Adjust the layout or print scaling if needed. Microsoft recommends a plain-paper test in its Publisher card-stock guidance; it is a practical alignment check, not a guarantee that your printer supports card stock.

5. Print from Word and inspect the result
- In Word for Windows, select File > Print.
- Choose the intended printer and review the preview with the page arrows.
- Confirm copies and print options, including orientation and scaling.
- Load the cards using the feed path and media settings specified in your printer manual, then select Print.
- Inspect the printed card before printing the rest of the batch; if alignment is off, correct the layout or print settings before continuing.
In Word for the web, Microsoft says Word creates a PDF copy for printing, so the PDF viewer and printer options may be part of the final print step. If the printer offers media or paper-type choices, use the setting specified for your card stock and model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Word or the printer will not accept the card size
If Word has no matching size and the printer driver cannot define one, or the printer’s manual does not support the card dimensions and stock, do not force the cards through an unsupported feed path. You can instead print a layout on full-size paper and trim the cards, or ask a commercial printer about specialty stock or a larger run. Microsoft discusses commercial printers for specialty papers and larger jobs, though it does not provide a Word-specific recipe for this workaround. Microsoft’s commercial-printing guidance explains that option.
