There is no reliable universal percentage of IKEA’s original price to use for resale. Set your asking price by identifying the exact item, checking the cost of a comparable replacement, assessing condition and completeness, and comparing local listings. Treat those listings as asking prices—not confirmed sale prices. IKEA’s Buyback & Resell estimator is a separate benchmark for store credit, not a guaranteed cash offer.
How to set an asking price
- Identify the exact item. Record its name, article number or model, dimensions, color or finish, and whether it is discontinued. Check labels, assembly instructions, or IKEA product information; do not assign a model name unless you can confirm it.
- Describe its condition and completeness. Check that drawers, doors, and hardware work; the item is stable; and all expected parts are present. Note wear, stains, damage, repairs, or modifications, and take clear, honest photos. IKEA’s buyback standard requires items to be complete, functional, clean, unmodified, and in good resaleable condition, though private buyers may judge condition differently. - Find a replacement-price reference. If IKEA still sells the same item, check its current price. Otherwise, look for a genuinely comparable item with similar size, materials, and function. Use this as context, not a resale formula: the available sources do not establish a standard discount or depreciation rate for used IKEA furniture.
- Compare local listings. Search for the same model and similar condition in your area. - Set the price and sale terms. Weigh the item’s condition, completeness, local alternatives, pickup or delivery burden, and how quickly you want it gone. Include dimensions, pickup requirements, and known flaws in the listing so buyers can decide whether it works for them.
- Compare IKEA’s estimate if store credit would be useful. Check the estimator and eligibility rules, then weigh the estimate against a private sale. IKEA’s estimate is subject to an in-person inspection, and the final offer may differ.
- Recheck before taking the item to a store. Confirm that a nearby location participates, the item is eligible, and you have followed the quote instructions before transporting bulky furniture.
How IKEA Buyback & Resell affects your comparison
IKEA U.S. directs sellers to use its Buyback Estimator Tool, then bring the fully assembled item and estimate to a participating store for review. IKEA’s help information says to bring the item within 30 days of receiving the estimate. Which items may qualify?
IKEA lists categories that can include dressers, bookcases and shelf units, small tables, multimedia furniture, cabinets, dining tables and desks, some chairs and stools, and certain children’s and home-organization products. Eligibility depends on the exact item, so check the current list and estimator rather than assuming that a category is automatically accepted. IKEA’s eligibility information

For a private listing, confirm the bookcase’s model and dimensions, check that shelves and fittings are present, and note any wobble, scratches, or water damage. Compare its current replacement price if the model is still sold, then look at local listings for the same model or a close equivalent. Use those prices as asking-price context, and account for whether the buyer must transport and assemble it. If IKEA credit is useful to you, check the estimator separately and compare the final in-store offer—not just the online estimate—with your private-sale option.
