Price a food or beauty product by first calculating its full variable cost per sellable unit, then checking whether the price customers will accept leaves enough contribution to cover fixed costs. That cost calculation is a floor—not a market price. Test it against customer willingness to pay, comparable products, channel terms, and likely sales volume before settling on a price.
What should your price cover?
Start with the amount your business actually receives for each unit, not automatically the shelf price or the amount a customer sees at checkout. A retailer, distributor, marketplace, promotion, or shipping subsidy can change the producer’s net revenue. Build a separate calculation for each sales channel and SKU when their costs or terms differ.
Calculate variable cost per sellable unit
Include costs that rise with production or sales. A practical worksheet can include:
- Ingredients or raw materials, including expected production loss, spoilage, rejects, or unusable product.
- Direct production labor attributable to making the unit.
- Primary and secondary packaging, labels, and any product-specific packaging or compliance expenses.
- Inbound freight allocated across the units received, and any fulfillment or shipping subsidy paid by the business.
- Payment-processing, marketplace, or other transaction fees.
- Variable commissions, discounts, retailer allowances, or promotion costs that apply to the sale.
Use the number of sellable units—not the number of units started in production—as the denominator when losses occur. Split mixed costs into fixed and variable parts where feasible; document the allocation method so you can use it consistently.

Keep fixed overhead visible
Rent, insurance, salaries, and other period expenses do not necessarily change with each unit sold. Treat them as fixed costs for the period or allocate them transparently; do not quietly omit them from the sustainability test. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s break-even guidance separates fixed costs from variable cost per unit and describes its calculation as an estimate.
How do you calculate margin, markup, and a starting price?
Use the net selling price received by your business as the denominator when measuring the business’s contribution margin. Consumer retail price and producer wholesale revenue are not interchangeable.
- Contribution per unit = net selling price received − variable cost per unit.
- Contribution margin = contribution per unit ÷ net selling price received.
- Markup = amount added to cost ÷ cost. It is measured against cost, not selling price.
For example, if variable cost is $6 and net revenue is $10 per unit, contribution is $4 and contribution margin is 40%; the markup on the $6 cost is 66.7%. These are arithmetic illustrations, not a recommended food or beauty margin. Contribution is not the same as profit: fixed overhead, taxes, and other expenses may still be unpaid.
Use a target margin only as a starting calculation
If you choose a target contribution-margin fraction, a simple starting price is:

- Tare button for measuring just the food, minus the container weight
- Battery operated; (2) AAA batteries included
Starting net price = variable cost per unit ÷ (1 − target margin fraction)
For illustration only, a $6 variable cost and a chosen 40% target margin produce a $10 starting net price: $6 ÷ (1 − 0.40). This does not establish that customers will pay $10, that the channel will deliver $10 to you, or that fixed overhead is covered. Add or validate costs not included in the variable-cost figure, and test the resulting offer against the market.
Be explicit in the worksheet about whether amounts include sales tax, discounts, returns, shipping, marketplace fees, retailer allowances, and overhead. A price model that omits one of these can show a margin that the business does not actually retain.

How do channel terms change the price you need?
Do not apply one generic retailer or distributor margin to every product. Retail format and buyer terms affect both the maker’s net revenue and the costs of selling through that route. The Government of Ontario’s food and beverage manufacturing guide notes that retail pricing and margin expectations vary by retail format; its market context is Ontario, so it is not a universal numeric benchmark.

| Route | What to model for your unit economics |
|---|---|
| Direct to consumer | Net amount after discounts, payment or marketplace fees, fulfillment, shipping subsidies, and expected returns. |
| Wholesale to a retailer | Net amount paid to you after negotiated discounts or allowances, plus freight, brokerage, payment terms, promotions, and any other buyer obligations. |
| Through a distributor | The amount your business actually receives after distributor and buyer terms, alongside freight, payment timing, promotions, and other selling costs. |
The table lists costs to investigate, not standard fees or universal terms. Calculate contribution and break-even separately for each route. A route with a lower net receipt per unit may still be viable if its costs, order size, or demand differ, but the forecast must support that case.
When comparing package sizes, compare like with like by product, size, quality, claims, and channel. Unit pricing—such as price per ounce or milliliter—can make different package sizes easier to compare. NIST’s 2025 unit-pricing guide reports that 74% of shoppers use unit pricing in a store when it is available, attributing the figure to FMI’s 2023 U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends; it is a U.S. grocery-store statistic, not a claim about all product categories or online shopping. NIST also quotes the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act’s policy statement: “Informed consumers are essential to the fair and efficient functioning of a free market economy.” See the NIST SP 1181 (2025).

The SBA expresses the same calculation as fixed costs ÷ (selling price per unit − variable cost per unit). If the net price is $10, variable cost is $6, and fixed costs for a month are $4,500, contribution is $4 per unit and the illustrative break-even volume is 1,125 units for that month. The figures are hypothetical arithmetic, not a cost benchmark or demand forecast.
Compare the required volume with a defensible forecast, not an optimistic capacity estimate. If the product has several SKUs or channel routes, repeat the calculation where prices, variable costs, or demand differ. The SBA cautions that its break-even result is an estimate, not a final accounting result.
How do you test whether the market will accept the price?
Costs establish a floor for a sustainable offer; customers and the market help establish whether the offer is viable at that level. Use more than a competitor’s listed price:

- Compare genuinely similar products on package size, quality, claims, positioning, and sales channel. A competitor price does not prove that competitor is profitable or that its economics match yours.
- Where practical, test offers and observe actual sales, conversion, repeat purchase, and response to promotions.
- Check whether the price still works after likely discounts, returns, channel fees, and fulfillment obligations.
If the market will not support a price that covers your variable costs and a reasonable share of fixed costs, revisit the product, package, cost structure, channel, or positioning rather than assuming a higher price will sell.

Which food and beauty compliance costs belong in the plan?
Regulatory requirements depend on the product and jurisdiction. The following are U.S.-specific orientation points, not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to the actual product, claims, facility, and location.
Beauty products in the United States
Under FDA guidance, a product’s classification can depend in part on its intended use and claims; some products may be cosmetics, drugs, or both. Cosmetic makers are responsible for product safety and labeling. FDA’s Cosmetics Labeling Guide discusses requirements including identity, net quantity, ingredient declaration, and business identity. Check the FDA fact sheet for small businesses and homemade cosmetics as well as current requirements for the product and claims; include applicable testing, labeling, packaging, and compliance work in the cost plan.
Food products in the United States
FDA’s food-business overview describes facility registration requirements subject to exceptions, safe-production requirements, and the role of state and local authorities. Nutrition-labeling exemptions have defined eligibility rules; a small business should not assume it qualifies. Review the FDA Small Business Nutrition Labeling Exemption Guide and confirm requirements for the particular product and business. Account for applicable compliance and labeling costs rather than treating them as optional extras.

Quick Recap
- Enter the sellable unit size and realistic expected yield, including spoilage, rejects, or other production loss.
- Add ingredients or materials, direct labor, packaging, inbound freight allocation, fulfillment or shipping subsidy, transaction fees, and variable selling costs to calculate variable cost per sellable unit.
- Enter the net selling price your business expects to receive for that channel, with discounts, fees, and allowances treated consistently.
- Calculate contribution per unit and contribution margin using that net price.
- Enter fixed costs for a defined period, then calculate break-even units for the same period.
- Compare that volume with a defensible demand forecast and test the price with customers and comparable offers.
- Revisit the model when actual costs, buyer terms, package size, promotions, or sales results change.
