The dependable way to keep stainless-steel appliances looking cleaner is to identify the finish first, then use the cleaner, cloth and drying method that finish allows. Traditional stainless and fingerprint-resistant stainless do not necessarily have the same care instructions. Fingerprint-resistant coatings can make marks less noticeable, but they do not make fingerprints disappear. The most reliable “prevention” is a finish-compatible routine that removes oils without leaving a new film behind.

Why fingerprints keep appearing

Fingerprints are a mixture of skin oils, moisture and other residue transferred when you touch a door or drawer. A smooth metal panel shows that residue readily, especially under bright kitchen lighting. A fingerprint-resistant surface is generally stainless steel with a clear protective coat designed to reduce how visible or adhesive those marks are. GE distinguishes this coated finish from typical indoor stainless steel, while KitchenAid uses the PrintShield name for one of its coated finishes.

“Fingerprint-resistant” is therefore a finish description, not a promise that the appliance will remain mark-free. The coating may reduce the appearance of smears, but normal handling can still leave visible marks. Cleaning and drying technique matter because leftover water, soap or oil can look like fingerprints even after the original residue has been removed.

Identify the finish before touching it with a cleaner

Look in the owner’s manual or the appliance maker’s care instructions before buying or applying a polish. Do not assume that every silver-colored panel is ordinary stainless steel. The finish determines which products are acceptable and which ones can dull, streak or damage the surface.

Finish Typical guidance Cloth and water Product cautions
Traditional stainless steel Warm, soapy water; wipe in the direction of the grain; dry and polish. Nonabrasive sponge for washing, followed by a clean microfiber or other soft cloth. A stainless-steel cleaner may be used when the manufacturer permits it. Keep polish away from plastic trim and rubber gaskets.
Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel Mild soap and warm water, followed by thorough drying. GE and KitchenAid give this approach for their cited coated finishes. Clean, soft cloth or microfiber cloth; use a separate dry cloth or towel to remove moisture. Do not use products prohibited for the specific finish. GE’s list includes several common household cleaners and paper towels.

If the manual does not clearly identify the finish, contact the appliance maker or use its care page rather than guessing. A product that is acceptable on uncoated stainless can be unsuitable for a clear-coated panel. Keep the model number handy when contacting the maker, because instructions can differ among product lines.

The basic routine that minimizes smears

  1. Remove loose debris. If crumbs or grit are on the panel, lift them away gently before rubbing. Abrasive particles can create scratches when dragged across the metal.
  2. Prepare the approved solution. For the finishes covered by the manufacturer guidance here, that means warm water with a small amount of mild soap. Do not add vinegar, bleach or another household chemical to the mixture.
  3. Wipe with a soft, clean cloth. Use a microfiber or another soft cloth. On traditional stainless, work evenly in the direction of the visible grain. On a coated finish, follow the appliance maker’s direction; GE and KitchenAid both specify a soft or microfiber cloth.
  4. Remove soap residue. Use a clean portion of the cloth dampened with plain water if needed. Residual soap can dry into streaks.
  5. Dry immediately. Wipe the panel with another clean, dry microfiber or soft cloth. Drying prevents water spots and removes the moisture that can make a clean surface look cloudy.
  6. Buff lightly. Use a fresh, dry section of microfiber with light pressure. Maytag specifically advises buffing fingerprints with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and wiping with the grain.

Keep the cloth itself clean. A cloth loaded with grease, grit or old cleaner can spread a film instead of removing it. Fold the cloth and switch to a clean side as it becomes damp or dirty. Two cloths are practical: one for washing and one reserved for drying, so the drying cloth does not simply redistribute the damp residue.

How to clean traditional stainless steel

Use warm, soapy water first

Whirlpool’s traditional-stainless method is warm, soapy water applied with a nonabrasive sponge. Wipe evenly with the grain, then polish and dry with a clean microfiber or soft cloth. The panel should be dry when you finish.

The grain may run horizontally, vertically or in another consistent direction. Look closely at the panel under normal light and move the cloth parallel to those lines rather than in tight circles. Gentle, even passes are less likely to leave a patchwork of streaks. If the grain changes direction around a handle or edge, follow the visible lines in each section instead of forcing one direction across the whole appliance.

When a stainless-steel cleaner is appropriate

For traditional stainless only, Whirlpool says a cleaner designed for stainless steel can help with fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots and food buildup. Treat this as an optional second step, not the default routine. Read the product directions and confirm that the appliance maker permits it for your finish.

Apply polish only where the instructions allow. Whirlpool warns against getting it on plastic trim or rubber gaskets, where a metal polish may leave residue or affect the material. If the manual does not approve a specialty product, stay with mild soap, warm water and careful drying. More product is not a substitute for removing soap and moisture with a clean cloth.

How to clean fingerprint-resistant stainless steel

Stick to mild soap and warm water

GE’s instructions for its fingerprint-resistant stainless finish call for mild soap and warm water with a clean, soft cloth or microfiber cloth. KitchenAid gives similar directions for PrintShield surfaces: mild soap, warm water, microfiber or another soft cloth, and thorough drying.

Use a light touch. A coated panel does not need aggressive scrubbing to remove ordinary fingerprints. Wash one manageable section at a time, then dry it before moving on so water does not evaporate into spots. Avoid treating a clear coat as if it were bare metal: polishing harder or using a stronger chemical can leave a more obvious film or damage the finish.

Dry with a second cloth

Use a separate clean, soft cloth or microfiber towel to wipe away all moisture. Drying is part of the cleaning process, not an optional cosmetic step. It limits streaks and water marks and removes the damp film that attracts dust. Inspect the panel from several angles after drying; bright light can reveal a remaining damp band that is easy to miss straight on.

Products and tools to avoid

Never use a universal “stainless-steel” product without checking the finish. GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance specifically says to avoid the following on its coated surface:

  • Stainless-steel cleaners
  • Bleach or chlorine bleach
  • Abrasive cleaners and abrasive cloths
  • Paper towels
  • Window sprays
  • Ammonia
  • Vinegar and other acidic cleaners
  • Oven cleaners
  • Alkaline cleaners

Whirlpool likewise warns that abrasive materials and several harsh cleaners can damage stainless finishes. The exact prohibited list can differ by maker and finish, so GE’s list should not be treated as a universal label for every appliance. Follow the instructions for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid scouring pads, rough sponges and any cloth that can scratch. Paper towels are also a poor choice for the GE finish cited above; they can leave lint or encourage dry rubbing. Choose a clean, soft microfiber cloth instead. Never combine cleaners in an attempt to make a stronger solution, and stop using a product if it leaves a film or changes the appearance.

Habits that reduce new fingerprints

Use handles and touch points deliberately

Open doors and drawers by the designed handle whenever possible rather than pressing the broad front panel. This does not eliminate cleaning, but it limits the area that receives skin oils. If someone touches the panel, wipe the mark with a dry, clean microfiber cloth before it accumulates with other residue.

Keep a dedicated cloth nearby

A dedicated, washable microfiber cloth makes a quick dry wipe practical. Keep it separate from cloths used for cooking grease, floor products or abrasive particles. Replace it when it becomes visibly dirty; reusing a greasy cloth simply redistributes the film. A small supply of clean cloths is more useful than one cloth that is repeatedly used while damp.

Dry after wet cleaning

Water left on the panel can dry into spots that resemble fingerprints. Make the final dry wipe part of every cleaning pass, especially around the lower edge of a refrigerator door or dishwasher where water can collect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not polish by habit

Extra polish is not automatically better. On a coated surface, an incompatible product can create more visible streaks than the fingerprints you were trying to prevent. Use specialty polish only when the model’s instructions expressly allow it.

Choosing the right approach at a glance

Your situation Best-supported action What not to do
You have traditional stainless and ordinary fingerprints Warm, soapy water, a nonabrasive sponge, grain-direction wiping, then microfiber drying. Do not scrub across the grain with an abrasive pad.
You have traditional stainless with oil, food buildup or water spots Use a compatible stainless-steel cleaner only if the manual permits it; follow its directions and protect trim and gaskets. Do not assume a cleaner approved for one model is approved for another.
You have GE fingerprint-resistant stainless Mild soap and warm water with a soft or microfiber cloth, followed by a separate dry cloth. Avoid GE’s prohibited products, including vinegar, ammonia, bleach, window spray and stainless cleaner.
You have KitchenAid PrintShield stainless Use mild soap, warm water and microfiber or another soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use an unapproved polish or abrasive tool.
You cannot identify the finish Check the owner’s manual or contact the maker before applying a product. Do not experiment with vinegar, bleach, abrasive cleaner or metal polish.

The main trade-off is compatibility versus convenience. Traditional stainless may allow an additional stainless-specific cleaner for buildup, while the cited coated finishes favor the simpler soap-and-water method. The simpler method uses fewer materials and carries less risk of applying an incompatible polish, but it still requires careful drying.

Troubleshooting streaks, spots and stubborn marks

The panel looks streaky after cleaning

Streaks usually indicate uneven wiping, leftover soap or moisture that was allowed to dry. Re-wipe with the approved mild-soap solution, remove residue with a clean damp cloth, and dry with a fresh microfiber. On traditional stainless, keep the final passes parallel to the grain.

Water spots remain

Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to buff the dry panel. Do not escalate immediately to vinegar or another acidic cleaner; GE prohibits vinegar and acidic cleaners on its cited fingerprint-resistant finish. If the appliance is traditional stainless, consult its manual before choosing a compatible specialty cleaner.

Fingerprints return immediately

That does not prove the coating has failed. Fingerprint-resistant finishes reduce visibility; they do not prevent skin oils from transferring. Reduce repeat marks by using handles, wiping touch points promptly and keeping a dry microfiber cloth available.

A sticky or cloudy film remains

Stop adding products. The residue may be leftover polish, soap or an incompatible cleaner. Follow the appliance maker’s cleaning instructions for the finish and use only the approved mild-soap method unless the manual specifies another recovery procedure. Do not scrape the film or use an abrasive pad.

The surface appears scratched or damaged

Discontinue abrasive tools and harsh chemicals. Record the product used and consult the maker’s care or service guidance. A clear coat or brushed metal cannot safely be restored by more vigorous rubbing.

A practical maintenance plan

Manufacturers cited here do not prescribe one universal cleaning frequency. Clean visible marks when they appear rather than applying a heavy product on a fixed schedule. The routine can be short: remove loose grit, wash with the finish-approved solution, wipe with the grain where applicable, and dry completely. Spend extra attention on handles and the areas family members touch most.

For a household with a traditional stainless appliance, keep a nonabrasive sponge, mild soap, clean microfiber cloths and—only if approved by the manual—a compatible stainless-steel cleaner. For a fingerprint-resistant appliance, the essential kit is simpler: mild soap, warm water and two clean, soft microfiber cloths, one for washing and one for drying. The cloths are reusable, so keeping them clean is more important than buying a more aggressive cleaner.

What manufacturers do and do not promise

Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid and Maytag provide cleaning directions for particular finishes and surfaces. Their guidance supports finish-specific care, soft cloths, appropriate soap and complete drying. It does not provide a universal fingerprint-reduction percentage, a required cleaning frequency or an independent comparison showing that one product prevents marks better than another.

Use “fingerprint-resistant” as an expectation-setting term: marks may be less conspicuous and easier to remove, but handling, lighting, moisture and residue still affect what you see. The safest prevention strategy is not a stronger chemical; it is matching the method to the finish and avoiding the products that its maker excludes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I prevent fingerprints on stainless steel appliances?

Identify the finish, use the maker-approved soap-and-water method, wipe with a soft microfiber cloth, and dry completely. Use handles instead of the broad panel and wipe fresh marks before they accumulate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I clean fingerprint-resistant stainless steel?

For the GE and KitchenAid finishes described here, use mild soap and warm water with a clean soft or microfiber cloth. Follow with a separate dry cloth or microfiber towel. Do not assume a traditional stainless polish is safe.

Can I use vinegar on a fingerprint-resistant refrigerator?

GE specifically lists vinegar and other acidic cleaners among the products to avoid on its fingerprint-resistant finish. Other makers may have different instructions, so check the manual rather than generalizing from another appliance.

Is stainless-steel cleaner required?

No. For traditional stainless, Whirlpool describes a compatible stainless-steel cleaner as an optional aid for fingerprints, oil, water spots and food buildup. It is not the default, and it should not be used on a coated finish unless the maker explicitly permits it.

Which cloth is best?

A clean, soft microfiber cloth is a reliable choice for both washing and drying in the cited guidance. Use a separate dry cloth for the final wipe, and replace or wash cloths that contain grease, grit or old cleaner.

What if I do not know my appliance’s finish?

Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s care page, or contact the maker with the model number. Until you know, avoid vinegar, bleach, abrasive products and metal polish.

Why do fingerprints come back after cleaning?

A fingerprint-resistant coating reduces how noticeable marks are; it does not stop skin oils from transferring. Handles, prompt dry wiping and a clean dedicated microfiber cloth reduce repeated smears, but no cited guidance promises a mark-free surface.

Can paper towels remove fingerprints?

GE advises avoiding paper towels on its fingerprint-resistant finish. Use a clean, soft microfiber or similar cloth instead, especially for the final drying pass.

Bottom line

There is no single best cleaner for every stainless appliance. Confirm whether the panel is traditional or fingerprint-resistant, then use warm water, mild soap and soft microfiber cloths as directed. Wipe with the grain when applicable, dry immediately, and reserve specialty stainless cleaner for traditional surfaces whose maker allows it. Avoid abrasive tools and the chemicals prohibited for your finish; that combination keeps fingerprints easier to remove without creating new damage.
