To prevent blisters during long-distance triathlon training, reduce repeated rubbing: wear well-fitting cycling and running shoes, keep feet and socks as dry as practical, check for hot spots, and adjust your gear or activity when redness or discomfort starts. If a blister forms, leave the skin intact when possible, cover it, and avoid the activity or equipment that caused it until it heals. Get medical advice for signs of infection, severe or recurring pain, or unusual blistering.

Why blisters form during long training sessions

A friction blister develops when repeated movement creates shear between skin and underlying tissue. Bone movement, friction, and repeated shear events all contribute. Moisture, pressure, a poor shoe fit, sock creases, or debris inside footwear can add to the problem. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says moist skin is more vulnerable and identifies properly fitting shoes and dry skin as key prevention measures in its 2025 first-aid guidelines.

There is no reliable blister-incidence figure for long-distance triathlon in the sources cited here. For comparison only, the IFRC reports that 4,000 to 5,000 participants at previous Nijmegen Four Days Marches required treatment for at least one blister—10% of walkers at that event. That multi-day walking figure is not a triathlon estimate.

How to lower your risk in training

Get footwear and socks right

  • Choose shoes that fit securely without being too tight or too loose. Use separate, appropriate footwear for cycling and running, and gradually break in new shoes rather than introducing them in a long session.
  • Wear moisture-wicking sports socks. Change them if they become sweaty, and check for folds or creases that may rub.
  • Check inside shoes for grit or other foreign objects, especially if you notice a new hot spot.

These measures reflect advice from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), the NHS, and the IFRC.

Catch rubbing before it becomes a blister

Pay attention to pain, discomfort, redness, or a developing hot spot. Stop and check your foot rather than continuing to rub the same area for the rest of a long session. Look for dampness, sock creases, pressure points, or a shoe-fit problem, then correct the cause. The AAD recommends stopping when pain, discomfort, or redness appears.

Rehearse your triathlon setup

Test the socks, shoes, tape, lubricant, powder, or dressings you plan to use during training—not for the first time on race day. During brick workouts, check for rubbing after the swim-to-bike and bike-to-run portions, and carry spare dry socks when practical. These are sensible ways to apply general friction-control guidance to transitions, not a transition protocol proven in trials.

Nexcare Blister Prevention Tape, Waterproof Foam Medical Tape, Sticks Firmly to Skin to Help Prevent Blisters - 1 In x 5 Yds, 1 Roll of Tape
  • CUSHIONED PROTECTION: 1 roll of 1 in x 5 yds Nexcare Blister Prevention Tape with cushioned foam design to protect blisters and help prevent new ones

  • COMFORTABLE: Breathable foam material cushions your skin

  • OUTDOORS: Waterproof and sweat-resistant design for reliable use during physical activities

Use friction-control products cautiously

The AAD suggests soft bandages over problem areas and says powder or petroleum jelly may reduce friction. These are options to test carefully in training, not guaranteed prevention methods. The IFRC describes the evidence for prevention as limited: findings on taping are mixed and very low certainty, and it says published studies have not established that pre-taping prevents blisters. No head-to-head evidence here establishes one product as best for all triathletes.

Hydrocolloid blister dressings may cushion and protect an existing blister. The NHS says they can reduce pain and speed healing; the IFRC also notes possible protection and comfort but cautions that repeated removal can damage skin and that evidence for treatment methods needs further trials. Treat any healing-speed or performance claim as uncertain, not as a reason to push through a worsening blister.

What to do when a blister appears

If the blister is intact

  • Leave it unpopped if possible and cover it loosely with a soft or padded dressing.
  • For a blister on the sole or another pressure area, use padding arranged around the blister to reduce direct pressure.
  • Stop or change the activity and equipment that caused it until the area heals.

The AAD says blisters commonly heal within one to two weeks; the NHS says they often heal within a week. Healing time varies, so use the blister’s condition—not a fixed training schedule—to guide your return.

If the blister has opened

  1. Wash your hands before touching the area.
  2. Gently clean it with soap and water, and let any fluid drain.
  3. Do not peel away the remaining skin roof.
  4. Apply petroleum jelly, as the AAD advises, and cover the area with a clean dressing.

Routine self-drainage is not advisable. Guidance differs on who might drain a blister and under what circumstances; for a large, very painful, or complicated blister, ask a clinician rather than attempting a needle procedure yourself.

When to pause training and seek medical advice

Stop the aggravating activity and seek prompt medical advice if the area becomes increasingly painful or swollen, the surrounding skin is red or hot, or pus appears. The NHS also advises seeking help for very painful or recurring blisters, blisters in unusual locations, unexplained clusters, or blisters caused by burns, sunburn, or an allergic reaction. A dressing can protect skin, but it does not replace medical assessment when these signs occur.
