Before you leave, confirm your phone will connect at each destination, choose how you will pay for service, and prepare for times when you have no signal. Check roaming and local SIM requirements before buying anything, then save essential information offline, secure the device, and pack a compatible charger and power adapter.
Will your phone work at your destination?
Ask your home carrier whether voice calls, texts, and mobile data work in every country on your itinerary. Confirm whether international service is included, requires activation or an add-on, and how charges are calculated—including daily fees, data limits, and call or text rates. Many U.S. plans do not include international service by default, according to the U.S. Department of State’s international communications guidance; that does not describe every country’s plans or every U.S. carrier.
Coverage and cost depend on your carrier, plan, destination, and intended use. Ask about service at each stop, not just the first country, and verify that you can make calls or receive verification texts if you need to keep your usual number active.

Choose how to connect
Compare your carrier’s roaming, a travel eSIM, and a local SIM against the same needs: coverage, data allowance, calls and texts, total cost, activation, and access to your home number. No single option is cheapest or best for every itinerary.

Check whether the phone is unlocked and compatible
A SIM or eSIM from another carrier may not work if your phone is locked to your current carrier. Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier; on supported iPhones, check Settings > General > About for “No SIM Restrictions.” This is an iPhone-specific check, not a universal Android instruction. Confirm your actual device model’s cellular-band and eSIM support, the provider’s compatibility requirements, and destination rules before purchase. (Apple Support)
Set up an eSIM or local SIM safely
Where supported, Apple says prepaid eSIM plans can be purchased through carrier websites or apps before travel, or in person after arrival. Use an official carrier or provider channel to activate an eSIM; the Government of Canada cautions against unverified public QR codes. Some destinations may restrict eSIM features or require registration of local SIMs, so check the requirements for your specific stops. (Apple Support; Government of Canada)

Prepare the phone before departure
Install updates and save essentials offline
Install operating-system and app updates before leaving, while you have a reliable connection. The State Department’s guidance says: “Update devices before you go: Install the latest updates for your phone, tablet, and apps before leaving the United States.” Download offline maps and translation tools for places you will visit, and save the information you might need if data service is unavailable:

- Local emergency numbers for each destination.
- Relevant embassy or consulate contact details.
- Copies of essential travel information stored securely and accessible without mobile data.
Keep an accessible backup list or another way to contact someone if your phone is lost, damaged, or out of power. U.S. citizens and nationals can also enroll in the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP); it is a U.S. government program, not a service for all travelers. Protect your phone and information
- Use a strong screen-lock passcode and enable the device’s tracking feature before travel.
- Keep physical control of your phone, particularly in crowded places.
- Avoid sensitive transactions on open Wi-Fi; use a trusted connection for banking or other sensitive activity.
- Turn Bluetooth off when you are not using it.
- Avoid connecting your phone to computers or public charging stations you do not control. Carry your own charger and use a trusted power source.
These are general precautions. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) gives related advice in its guidance on traveling with personal internet-enabled devices. Separate recommendations from the National Security Agency for official or high-risk travel are specialized guidance, not a universal tourist checklist.
Pack charging equipment that fits
Check the outlet type at your destination and the charging requirements of your phone. Bring a charger and the power adapter needed for your itinerary; requirements can differ between destinations, so a particular adapter should not be assumed to work everywhere. The State Department includes suitable adapters and chargers in its communications guidance.

Check for regional roaming rules
If you have an eligible plan and are making periodic trips within the EU, the European Union’s “Roam Like at Home” framework generally lets travelers use calls, texts, and data at domestic rates, subject to the regime’s conditions and your plan. The European Commission says eligibility depends in part on spending more time at home than abroad, or using the SIM more at home than abroad. Check the European Commission’s roaming information and your plan terms; the framework does not automatically apply to non-EU plans or every traveler.
