Prepare in two tracks: make a room where your household can reduce smoke exposure, and get your home and evacuation plan ready for fire. Set up filtration and supplies before smoke arrives; when officials tell you to evacuate, leave promptly rather than relying on indoor filtration.
Set up a clean-air room before smoke arrives
Choose a room large enough for everyone who may shelter there, ideally one with few windows and doors. A bedroom with an attached bathroom can be practical. Plan for household members and pets to use the room, and keep a safe exit available.
- Close the openings. During smoke, close the room’s windows and doors. Close or turn off the home’s fresh-air intake if the system allows it.
- Filter the air. Use a portable air cleaner sized for the room, or central HVAC filtration if the system can support the filter. Keep filtration running while smoke is present.
- Keep the room cool. Use air conditioning, a heat pump, or fans as appropriate. A closed room can become uncomfortably hot, so monitor conditions rather than treating the room as a sealed shelter.
- Reduce indoor particles. Avoid smoking, candles and incense, aerosol sprays, frying, and unnecessary vacuuming or sweeping. Damp-wipe or damp-mop surfaces to avoid stirring settled dust back into the air.
AirNow’s 2026 wildfire-smoke preparation guidance and cleaner-air-room guidance describe ways to reduce exposure indoors. A clean-air room is not smoke-proof. If smoke continues entering, the room gets too warm, or power fails, move to a cleaner-air location if you can: for example, a public cleaner-air shelter, an air-conditioned building with good filtration, or the home of friends or family.
Choose filtration that fits your home
A room cleaner and central HVAC filtration work differently. A portable unit serves the room or area where it runs; a central filter works through the home’s HVAC system and depends on that system’s compatibility and airflow.

These operating recommendations come from AirNow’s indoor air-filtration guidance. A higher-rated HVAC filter is not automatically a safe fit for every system: compatibility and the ability to maintain airflow matter.
Prepare supplies and an evacuation plan
Make plans before fire weather or smoke forces rushed decisions. CAL FIRE recommends an action plan, emergency supply kit, and family communication plan. The federal Ready.gov emergency supply kit guidance can help organize household essentials.

- Important information: Keep important documents accessible, and know how family members will communicate if separated.
- People and pets: Decide how children, older adults, people with medical needs, and pets will be transported and where they will go.
- Leaving: Choose an evacuation route and destination in advance. Monitor local official alerts, be ready to go, and follow evacuation orders. Routes and conditions can change quickly.
For smoke-specific preparations, AirNow’s preparation guidance also discusses planning for medicines, food, and respirators. A respirator can reduce inhaled particles when used appropriately, but it does not make it safe to stay in an evacuation zone or override an evacuation order.

Home hardening means using ignition-resistant materials and features; defensible space means creating and maintaining a buffer between the home and surrounding vegetation. CAL FIRE presents these as complementary steps and cautions that they cannot guarantee a home will survive a wildfire. Its guidance is for California; local rules and recommended distances elsewhere may differ, so check with local fire authorities.

Prioritize the first five feet in California
CAL FIRE identifies the first five feet around a structure as especially important in its Zone 0 guidance. Suggested measures include replacing combustible bark or mulch with gravel, pavers, or concrete; clearing dead plants and debris from roofs, gutters, decks, porches, stairs, and beneath structures; limiting combustible items on decks; moving firewood away from the home; and considering noncombustible replacements for attached fencing and gates. Think beyond landscaping
Defensible space addresses the area around the building, while home hardening addresses the building’s vulnerability to ignition. Review the property for combustible materials and features that local fire authorities identify as priorities; consider a local wildfire home-hardening or defensible-space assessment if you need site-specific advice. No single product or landscaping change makes a home fireproof.

Know when to leave or find cleaner air
Use the clean-air room to reduce smoke exposure only while it remains safe and usable. Move elsewhere if the room becomes too hot, filtration stops, or smoke is getting in. If an evacuation order is issued, leave promptly and follow official instructions rather than sheltering in place. Air quality and fire conditions can change quickly; monitor local emergency alerts and use current directions for routes and destinations.
