Prepare in four stages: get the house and household ready before storm season, secure what you can when a storm is forecast, shelter away from glass while it passes, and check for damage only after it is safe. Hail can occur anywhere in Canada, and federal guidance says parts of the Prairies experience some of the country’s most frequent and severe hail. Local exposure and the right home upgrades vary, so use official alerts and consult qualified local specialists for property-specific work.
Before storm season: prepare the home and household
Make a plan and choose alert sources
Decide where everyone will shelter and how household members will contact one another if separated. Include children, older adults, people with health needs and pets in the plan. Choose reliable ways to receive warnings and updates: federal hail guidance points to the WeatherCAN app, public weather alerts, and local radio and television. Check current local advice about mobile alerts, including Alert Ready compatibility, since services and interfaces can change.
Reduce drainage and wind hazards
- Clear eavestroughs, drains and basins around the home so water can flow away. Check for existing foundation damage and make sure a sump pump works.
- From a safe position, look for loose or previously damaged shingles, chimney components and other exterior items. Do not climb onto the roof; arrange qualified help for roof or chimney work.
- Trim shrubs and trees and remove damaged branches. Trimming may reduce hazards, but it cannot guarantee protection from wind damage; official guidance does not set a universal pruning schedule.
- Review your insurance policy with an insurance representative so you understand what your own coverage says. Coverage varies by policy.
Consider longer-term protection
Federal hail guidance identifies several options, but does not provide a Prairie-wide product rating or installation specification. Suitability depends on local hail exposure, the existing structure and proper installation. Ask a qualified local specialist which materials and methods fit your home and check applicable provincial or municipal requirements.

Build an emergency kit for at least 72 hours
The federal emergency kit checklist recommends enough essential supplies for at least three days (72 hours), whether you are sheltering in place or evacuating. Tailor the kit to your household, including pets, medications, medical equipment and any needs associated with living in a remote area. Build it over time and check expiry dates.

- Wind-up or battery-powered flashlight
- Basic tools, gloves, duct tape and scissors
- Plastic sheeting and local maps
- Warm bedding, food and water suited to household needs
Never use a fuel-operated stove inside a building, tent or other enclosed space.
When a storm is forecast: secure what you can safely
- Follow official warnings and updates.
- Put away or secure loose outdoor items, including patio furniture and barbecues. Do not bring propane tanks indoors.
- If a garage is available, move your vehicle inside. Shelter animals if you can do so safely.
- Keep the emergency kit accessible. Unplug appliances when thunderstorm activity is forecast to help protect them from power surges.
- Do not attempt risky last-minute work on a roof or trees.
During the storm: shelter people first
Go inside a secure building and stay away from windows, doors and skylights. Use a basement or, if there is none, the most central room available. Keep battery-powered devices such as flashlights nearby and follow directions from officials. Do not go outside to protect property or inspect damage while the storm is active.

If the power goes out
Never run outdoor fuel-burning equipment indoors, including a portable generator. Federal hail guidance says to place portable generators at least 6 m (20 feet) from the home or other buildings, including garages and sheds. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and maintain working carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup.

Follow local emergency directions and watch for flooding and outages. Inspect the home only when it is safe, and document damage for your insurer. Clear broken glass carefully. Stay away from downed power lines and anything touching them.
