Prepare for the hazards your location actually faces—not for El Niño as if it were a street-level forecast. El Niño changes broad regional patterns of temperature and precipitation; it does not tell you whether a particular home will flood, overheat, or face water restrictions. Check current local forecasts and alerts, your community’s emergency guidance, flood maps, and your water provider’s rules, then make a plan for the risks that apply to your home.

For most households, the first steps are low-cost: learn how you would receive warnings, decide where to go in an emergency, protect essential documents and belongings, reduce indoor heat, and fix water leaks. Consider equipment or construction work only when local conditions make it useful.

What does El Niño mean for your home?

El Niño is a phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a natural interaction between the ocean and atmosphere that affects global temperature and precipitation patterns. In El Niño conditions, the southern United States usually has increased rainfall from fall through spring, and that rainfall can sometimes cause destructive flooding. Patterns differ elsewhere, and seasonal tendencies do not establish what will happen at one address.

Use local information to decide what to do:

  • Check National Weather Service forecasts and alerts for your area, and learn how your local emergency-management agency issues evacuation or shelter instructions.
  • Check FEMA flood maps for the property’s mapped flood exposure. A map is one input to planning, not a guarantee that flooding will or will not occur.
  • Ask your water provider about current drought conditions, restrictions, and any limits on outdoor watering or rainwater collection.

The National Weather Service counted 285 U.S. weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each, adjusted for inflation, during 1980–2020; the page was accessed in 2026. That is broad disaster context, not an El Niño-specific count or an estimate of household losses.

How can you prepare your home for flooding?

Start with alerts, evacuation, and household needs

  • Find out how local officials will alert you and which routes or locations they recommend if you need to leave. Make a communication and evacuation plan with household members.
  • Include pets, medications, mobility needs, children, and a place to go. Decide how you will contact one another if phone service is disrupted.
  • Keep basic emergency supplies ready. Store important documents in a waterproof container and keep digital copies somewhere you can access if the home is damaged.

Reduce avoidable water damage

  • Clear gutters and drains so water can flow away rather than backing up around the home.
  • Move valuables and essential items to higher levels where practical. Consider whether critical utilities can be elevated safely and appropriately; use qualified help where installation or local requirements call for it.
  • If the property is prone to water intrusion, a backwater valve or battery-operated sump pump may be worth discussing with a qualified professional. Suitability depends on the building and local conditions; these measures do not guarantee protection.

Check flood coverage before you need it

Standard homeowners policies generally do not cover flood damage. If flood coverage may be appropriate, ask your insurer or the National Flood Insurance Program directly about availability, covered losses, exclusions, costs, and any waiting rules. Do not assume a policy will take effect immediately or cover every kind of water damage.

During a flood, follow official instructions and stay out of the water

Evacuate when directed and do not enter floodwater on foot or in a vehicle. FEMA’s instruction is: “Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around. Don’t Drown.”

How do you keep your home safer during extreme heat?

Limit heat entering the home

  • Shade sun-facing windows and use weather-stripping around doors and windows to reduce heat gain. Insulation or reflective window coverings may also help, depending on the home.
  • A window air conditioner can be one cooling option. Confirm that the electrical circuit can handle it and that the unit is installed correctly; follow the manufacturer’s instructions or use a qualified installer.

Plan for cooling and power outages

  • Identify a cooled place in your community in advance, such as a cooling center if one is available. Check local announcements for its hours and any access requirements.
  • Think through what you will do if an outage leaves your home without air conditioning. A fan is not a substitute for primary cooling in extreme heat.
  • Follow local heat alerts and arrange check-ins for people at greater risk, including older adults, children, and people with certain health conditions.

How can you conserve water during drought?

Start with repairs and indoor habits

  • Fix leaks, install efficient fixtures or appliances when replacement is due, take shorter showers, and run full laundry loads.
  • Follow your water provider’s current restrictions. Local rules may limit when or how much you can water outdoors, even if your household is otherwise conserving.

Make outdoor watering more efficient

  • Consider native or drought-tolerant plants suited to your area and efficient irrigation where it is appropriate.
  • If watering is allowed, do it during cooler hours to reduce water lost to evaporation, while following local schedules and restrictions.
  • A rain barrel or cistern may collect water for non-potable uses. Check local ordinances and use restrictions before installing or using a system; collected rainwater should not be treated as safe to drink.

How should you plan for overlapping hazards?

Weather disruptions can compound one another. Drought and heat can occur together; heavy rain can bring flooding; and extreme heat can coincide with power outages. Make your plan for the combination of hazards that is plausible where you live, not just one event in isolation.

  • Tailor supplies and communication plans to age, health, medications, pets, and mobility needs in the household.
  • Consider how you will keep phones charged and maintain access to essential information during an outage.
  • For heat, know where you can cool down if your home loses power. For flooding, know where you can go if officials tell you to evacuate.

Which upgrades make sense for your property?

There is no universally necessary preparedness product. A useful way to decide is to match the measure to a local hazard, consider its likely benefit and upkeep, and check installation, electrical, code, and water-use requirements before buying or building.

Emergency Survival Kit for Hurricane, Storm, Tornado, El Nino Preparedness
  • Prepare Now for the El Nino Storm Season: El Nino pushes storms closer to the U.S. coast, leaving as little as 48 hours to prepare. Backup supplies when weather catches you off guard
  • Hand-Assembled in New England: Designed by a disaster professional and assembled by a real person, not a faceless factory. Every kit checked by hand before it ships
  • Emergency Lifeline When You're Stuck: For flash floods, closed roads, or power outages when you can't reach a store. Below-average hurricane forecast for El Niño doesn't mean no risk-the storm that hits may arrive faster and closer to home
  • Upgraded 2026 Version: Premium lined and insulated rain poncho replaces economy version plus expanded comfort kit for extended emergencies
  • Comfort-Focused Emergency Kit: Beyond basic first aid with bandages, bacitracin, lip balm, alcohol wipes, PLUS hand lotion and dental pick
  • Flood-prone property: Gutter and drain maintenance and moving belongings are simple first steps. A sump pump with battery backup or a backwater valve may be relevant where the building and local conditions justify it; installation may require qualified help.
  • Hot home: Shading, weather-stripping, insulation, or reflective coverings may reduce heat entering the home. A window air conditioner requires suitable electrical capacity and correct installation, and it does not solve the problem of a prolonged outage.
  • Water-constrained area: Leak repairs, efficient fixtures, and changes to outdoor planting or irrigation can reduce demand. A rain barrel or cistern is only useful where local rules allow it and the intended use is permitted.
